Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two surgical methods, Hartmann's procedure (HP) and resection with primary anastomosis (RPA), for treating acute left-sided colonic emergencies among 1215 patients from 204 centers globally.
  • Results showed that while HP was the more common treatment (57.3%), RPA was favored for younger patients with fewer health issues and those needing surgery sooner.
  • The study concluded that although HP is still widely used, RPA might be the better option, emphasizing the importance of patient characteristics and surgeon experience in determining treatment choice.

Effects of Standard-Dose Prophylactic, High-Dose Prophylactic, and Therapeutic Anticoagulation in Patients With Hypoxemic COVID-19 Pneumonia: The ANTICOVID Randomized Clinical Trial.

JAMA Intern Med

June 2023

Université Paris Est Créteil, Institut Mondor de Recherche Biomédicale, Groupe de Recherche Clinique CARMAS (Cardiovascular and Respiratory Manifestations of Acute lung injury and Sepsis), Créteil, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on determining the best type of anticoagulation therapy for COVID-19 pneumonia patients to reduce mortality and disease duration, comparing therapeutic anticoagulation (TA), high-dose prophylactic anticoagulation (HD-PA), and standard-dose prophylactic anticoagulation (SD-PA).
  • Conducted in France, the ANTICOVID trial involved 334 patients with hypoxemic COVID-19 pneumonia, all requiring supplemental oxygen, and aimed to understand the effects of these treatments over a 14-day period.
  • Results indicated that HD-PA and SD-PA had similar outcomes, as did TA when compared to SD-PA, suggesting no significant advantage for either anticoagulation strategy in improving patient outcomes by day

Introduction: COVID-19 induces venous, arterial and microvascular thrombosis, involving several pathophysiological processes. In patients with severe COVID-19 without macrovascular thrombosis, escalating into high-dose prophylactic anticoagulation (HD-PA) or therapeutic anticoagulation (TA) could be beneficial in limiting the extension of microvascular thrombosis and forestalling the evolution of lung and multiorgan microcirculatory dysfunction. In the absence of data from randomised trials, clinical practice varies widely.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) improve the prognosis of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. However, clinicians should be aware of potentially life-threatening immune-related adverse events (irAEs). We report a case of a 67-year-old man with lung adenocarcinoma who developed an acute ischemic stroke after the second administration of pembrolizumab.

Objectives: This study aimed to identify demographic, clinical and medical care factors associated with mortality in three nursing homes in France.

Methods: Two nursing homes were hospital-dependent, had connections with infection prevention and control departments, and had permanent physicians. A third nursing home had no direct connection with a general hospital, no infection control practitioner, and no permanent physician.

Objective: Cardiac arrest is the most frequent cause of death in chronic alcoholics. Detection of late potentials in this population could be helpful in screening from early signs of myocardial disorders and identifying patients at risk of severe ventricular dysrythmia.

Patients And Methods: A prospective study of late potentials was conducted in 53 subjects (mean age 49 +/- 10 years) with a history of long-standing alcohol abuse (mean 13.

Cardiovascular death is the main cause of mortality in chronic alcoholics, perhaps due to a pro-arrhythmogenic effect of alcohol associated with infraclinical myocardial lesions. The authors investigated prospectively 41 patients (average age: 49.7 years) who were chronic alcoholics but had no acute alcoholic episodes for cardiac disease (ECG, signal averaging for late ventricular potentials, echocardiography and Holter ECG monitoring) and hepatic disease (liver biopsy).

[Hypoglycemia caused by cibenzoline. Apropos of a new case].

Ann Cardiol Angeiol (Paris)

January 1989

Service de Médecine Cardiologique, Centre Hospitalier Léon-Binet, Provins.

The rare cases of hypoglycemia reported during treatment with cibenzoline, have been observed with drug overdoses, in combination with kidney failure, and with ECG signs of drug intoxication. A case report involving an 80 year old man is presented. He had a moderate degree of kidney failure and was on high drug dosage, considering his age and weight.
