Pancreaticoduodenectomy after esophagectomy is a challenging procedure given the need to preserve the vascularization of the gastric plasty. We describe a case of a modified Longmire III procedure in a 68-year-old patient who underwent an esophagectomy with gastric conduit reconstruction in 2019 for esophageal adenocarcinoma. Two years later, an adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater was diagnosed, necessitating pancreaticoduodenectomy with preservation of the gastric conduit.

Background: Relapse in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (pedAML) patients is known to be associated with residual leukemic stem cells (LSC). We have previously shown that epithelial membrane protein 1 (EMP1) is significantly overexpressed in LSC compared to hematological stem cell fractions. EMP1 was also documented as part of the 17-gene stemness score and a 6-membrane protein gene score, both correlating high EMP1 expression with worse overall survival.

Article Synopsis
  • Seasonal variations at birth can influence DNA methylation, which may affect health outcomes over a person’s lifetime.
  • A study involving multiple cohorts discovered specific DNA methylation patterns linked to different birth seasons, revealing 26 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) at birth and 32 in childhood.
  • Results suggested that geographic latitude plays a role in these associations, linking certain genes to conditions like schizophrenia and asthma, particularly in infants born in higher latitudes (≥50°N).

This study aims to describe end-of-life (EOL) care in older patients with cancer and investigate the association between geriatric assessment (GA) results and specialized palliative care (SPC) use. Older patients with a new cancer diagnosis (2009-2015) originally included in a previous multicentric study were selected if they died before the end of follow-up (2019). At the time of cancer diagnosis, patients underwent geriatric screening with Geriatric 8 (G8) followed by GA in case of a G8 score ≤14/17.

Background: Little evidence is available on the long-term health-care utilisation of older patients with cancer and whether this is associated with geriatric screening results. We aimed to evaluate long-term health-care utilisation among older patients after cancer diagnosis and the association with baseline Geriatric 8 (G8) screening results.

Methods: For this retrospective analysis, we included data from three cohort studies for patients (aged ≥70 years) with a new cancer diagnosis who underwent G8 screening between Oct 19, 2009 and Feb 27, 2015, and who survived more than 3 months after G8 screening.

  • A 16-year-old boy had back pain but appeared healthy and didn't have any other signs of serious illness.
  • After going to the emergency room twice, doctors found a rare and dangerous blood clot in a major vein of his body, which could seriously harm him.
  • This situation shows that sometimes kids can have serious health issues that start with unusual symptoms like back pain, so it's important for doctors to recognize these warning signs.

A regional acceleration of bone remodeling may possibly follow biomechanical insults to the bone. This review assesses the literature and clinical arguments supporting the hypothetical association between accelerated bone remodeling and bone marrow edema (BME)-like signal intensity on magnetic resonance imaging. BME-like signal is defined as a confluent ill-delimited area of bone marrow with a moderate decrease in signal intensity on fat-sensitive sequences and a high signal intensity on fat-suppressed fluid-sensitive sequences.

Department of Radiology, Musculoskeletal Section, Centre Hospitalier Chretien, CHC, Clinique Mont Legia, Liege, Belgium.

Depending on the age and location within the skeleton, bone marrow can be mostly fatty or hematopoietic, and both types can be affected by marrow necrosis. This review article highlights the magnetic resonance imaging findings of disorders in which marrow necrosis is the dominant feature.Fatty marrow necrosis is detected on T1-weighted images that show an early and specific finding: the reactive interface.

Since the first cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Wuhan in December 2019, this RNA virus gave rise to different viral lineages with different virological, epidemiological and immunological properties. Here we describe the dynamics of circulation of SARS-CoV-2 lineages in an Amazonian South American French overseas territory, French Guiana (FG). The data analyzed are based on the general epidemic course, and genomic surveillance data come from whole genome sequencing (WGS) as well as typing PCRs.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the effectiveness of semi-quantitative adenosine perfusion MRI for diagnosing intermediate-grade coronary stenoses with a fractional flow reserve (FFR) ≤ 0.80, comparing it to traditional visual analysis.
  • Involving 46 patients with 49 stenoses, the results showed that while visual readings had limited agreement, the MRI-derived relative myocardial perfusion index (RMPI) demonstrated significantly higher diagnostic accuracy at 88%.
  • The study concluded that semi-quantitative MRI can potentially offer a more reliable method for identifying clinically significant stenoses, though further research with larger patient groups is needed for confirmation.

Nationwide Harmonization Effort for Semi-Quantitative Reporting of SARS-CoV-2 PCR Test Results in Belgium.

Viruses

June 2022

National Reference Centre for Respiratory Pathogens, Department of Laboratory Medicine, University Hospitals Leuven, 3000 Leuven, Belgium.

From early 2020, a high demand for SARS-CoV-2 tests was driven by several testing indications, including asymptomatic cases, resulting in the massive roll-out of PCR assays to combat the pandemic. Considering the dynamic of viral shedding during the course of infection, the demand to report cycle threshold (Ct) values rapidly emerged. As Ct values can be affected by a number of factors, we considered that harmonization of semi-quantitative PCR results across laboratories would avoid potential divergent interpretations, particularly in the absence of clinical or serological information.

High-throughput sequencing (HTS) of the immunoglobulin heavy chain () locus is a recent very efficient technique to monitor minimal residual disease of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL). It also reveals the sequences of clonal rearrangements, therefore, the multiclonal structure, of BCP-ALL. In this study, we performed HTS on the diagnostic bone marrow of 105 children treated between 2004 and 2008 in Belgium for BCP-ALL in the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)-58951 clinical trial.
