Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the orbit is a very rare entity. We report a case of a 10-year-old boy having progressive protrusion of the eyeball, restricted ocular motility, ptosis, and ocular pain for 2 months. On examination, a fixed, nontender, firm, hyperemic, nonpulsatile globular mass was palpated in the superomedial quadrant of the orbit.

Article Synopsis
  • A 67-year-old man with Parkinson-plus syndrome experienced a unique case involving a dislocated cataractous lens in one eye and a subluxated lens in the other, despite no trauma history.
  • His condition included apraxia of lid opening and moderate-to-severe blepharospasm, which are complications often associated with Parkinson-plus syndrome.
  • The case suggests that these movement disorders may lead to spontaneous lens dislocation, highlighting a potential, unusual ocular complication of the syndrome.

Indian J Ophthalmol

Department of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, Orbit and Ocular Oncology, Centre for Sight, Hyderabad, Telangana, India.

Background: Dermoid cyst, a developmental benign choristoma, is the most common orbital tumor of childhood, arising from ectodermal sequestration along the lines of embryonic fusion of mesodermal processes, lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and expanding slowly due to constant desquamation and dermal glandular elements. Approximately 80% are found in the head and neck region and comprise 3-9% all orbital masses.

Purpose: It is mandatory to know about the variable presentations of orbital dermoids and the surgical techniques that can be adopted based on the site, extent, age and aesthetic needs, presence of inflammation and possibility of intraoperative rupture.

We propose a technique for combined femto laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and limited vitrectomy from the pars-plana site for optimization of surgical results in subluxated cataracts. FLACS creates a free-floating, customised capsulotomy, minimizes stress on compromised zonules, and prechops the nucleus, effectively reducing the ultrasonic power as well as the forces required to chop the nucleus. The area of zonular dehiscence creates a direct communication between the irrigation fluid and the anterior vitreous, leading to its hydration.
