This research paper deals with a novel method utilizing packed bed electrocoagulation (PBEC) comprising of sacrificial iron electrodes and coupled with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) used as flocculent agents for the treatment of commercial laundry wastewater (LWW). The study employs stainless steel cathodes, graphite anodes, and scrap iron pieces as sacrificial electrodes, ensuring efficient treatment in dynamic batch mode operation with enhanced contact time facilitated by serpentine flow. The initial characteristics of LWW were COD 579 ± 30 mg/L, TSS of 60 ± 10 mg/L, TS of 622 ± 20 mg/L, turbidity of 110 ± 5 NTU, pH of 9 ± 0.

Lake St. Charles, located north of Quebec City, Canada, is a shallow fluvial lake with two distinct basins bridging rural and urban landscapes. Mainly used as a source of drinking water for 300,000 residents, the lake has faced a steady degradation in water quality due to urbanization and the discharge of domestic wastewater.

Laundry wastewater is a significant source of nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO) at wastewater treatment plants, where its breakdown forms persistent nonylphenol (NP). NP poses risks as an endocrine disruptor in wildlife and humans. This study investigates the degradation of NPEO and COD in industrial laundry wastewater (LWW) using a two-stage process combining ultrafiltration (UF) and electro-oxidation (EO).

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have become a growing environmental concern due to their tangible impacts on human health. However, due to the large number of PFAS compounds and the analytical difficulty to identify all of them, there are still some knowledge gaps not only on their impact on human health, but also on how to manage them and achieve their effective degradation. PFAS compounds originate from man-made chemicals that are resistant to degradation because of the presence of the strong carbon-fluorine bonds in their chemical structure.

In this study, the toxicogenomic effects of five cytostatics (tamoxifen, methotrexate, capecitabine, cyclophosphamide, and ifosfamide) on fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) larvae were evaluated. Post-fertilization eggs were exposed to increasing concentrations of the drugs for six days. The expression levels of two genetic biomarkers for toxicity and four thyroid hormone-related gene pathways were measured.

A 3D hydrodynamic model (EFDC) was applied to simulate dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature (T) (two crucial parameters impacting water quality) throughout Lake St. Charles, a rural-urban shallow lake located North of Quebec City, Canada. Model outputs of T and DO corroborate observations at five monitoring stations within the lake.

Microplastics and nanoplastics (NPs) in laundry wastewater (LWW) are major sources of plastic particles in wastewater treatment plants. Unlike microplastics, almost no information exists in the literature on the degradation of NPs in LWW. In this work, the degradation of NPs in commercial LWW by the electro-peroxidation process is investigated.

Wastewater generated from households can be classified into greywater and blackwater. Greywater makes up a substantial portion of household wastewater. Such water consists of wastewater released from kitchen sinks, showers, laundries, and hand basins.

The gap between water demand and available water supply led to wastewater treatment, particularly greywater. Due to specific characteristics of grey wastewater, treatment and recycling of this type of wastewater capture global attention. This paper presents a literature review of the remediation of greywater by adsorption processes.

Microplastics and nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging water contaminants which have recently gained lots of attention because of their effects on the aquatic systems and human life. Most of the previous works on the treatment of plastic pollution in water have been focused on microplastics and a very limited study has been performed on the NPs treatment. In this work, the role of main reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in the electrooxidation (EO) and electro-peroxidation (EO-HO) of NPs in water is investigated.

The management of plastics waste is one of the most urgent and significant global problems now. Historically, waste plastics have been predominantly discarded, mechanically recycled, or incinerated for energy production. However, these approaches typically relied on thermal processes like conventional pyrolysis, which are energy-intensive and unsustainable.

In this work, established treatment processes for microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in water as well as developed analytical techniques for evaluation of the operation of these processes were reviewed. In this regard, the strengths and limitations of different qualitative and quantitative techniques for the analysis of MPs and NPs in water treatment processes were first discussed. Afterward, the MPs and NPs treatment processes were categorized into the separation and degradation processes and the challenges and opportunities in their performance were analyzed.

Cytostatics are compounds used in chemotherapy, known to be genotoxic, mutagenic, and teratogenic at low concentrations. The amount of cytostatic drugs prescribed increases every year as does their release into the aquatic ecosystems, which possibly is a major concern for the health of aquatic organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the putative toxicity of five cytostatics to fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) larvae: tamoxifen, capecitabine, methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, and ifosfamide.

Animal welfare concerns have been a challenging issue for producers and international marketing. In laying hen production, cage-free systems (CFS) have been identified as an alternative to ensure the laying hens' well-being. Nevertheless, in CFS, important environmental issues have been reported, decreasing indoor air quality.

Water pollution by microplastics (MPs) is a contemporary issue which has recently gained lots of attentions. Despite this, very limited studies were conducted on the degradation of MPs. In this paper, we reported the treatment of synthetic mono-dispersed suspension of MPs by using electrooxidation (EO) process.

An increase of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in inland waters has been reported across the northern temperate region but the effects of this on whole lake ecosystems, often combined with other anthropogenic stressors like nutrient inputs and warming, are poorly known. The effects of these changes on different component of the ecosystem were assessed in an experiment using twenty-four large (3000L) outdoor mesocosms simulating shallow lakes. Two different temperature regimes (ambient and ambient +4 °C) combined with three levels of organic matter (OM, added as filtered peaty water), simulating the DOC increase that is predicted to take place over the next 4 to 21 years were used.

Thyroid hormones (THs) and androgens have been shown to be extensively involved in sexual development; however, relatively little is known with regard to TH-related and androgenic actions in sex determination. We first established expression profiles of three sex-determining genes (sf1, dax-1, and sox9) during the embryonic development of Western clawed frogs (Silurana tropicalis). Transcripts of sf1 and sox9 were detected in embryos before the period in which embryonic transcription commences indicating maternal transfer, whereas dax-1 transcripts were not detected until later in development.
