Orthorexia Nervosa and Healthy Orthorexia in a Physically Active North American Population.

Nutrients

April 2024

Sensory Evaluation Center, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Centre County, PA 16802, USA.

The Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS) defines two related but distinct constructs: Orthorexia Nervosa (OrNe), a pathological fixation on a healthy diet, and Healthy Orthorexia (HeOr), an interest in a healthy diet independent of psychopathology. Here, we (a) assessed both types of Orthorexia in a large North American sample using the TOS and (b) explored if engaging in regular physical activity was associated with a greater risk of Orthorexia. A cohort of physically active adults ( = 927; 41% men) completed the TOS, as well as the Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity (RAPA), to broadly assess aerobic physical activity level and participation in strength and/or flexibility training.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how people feel and how it relates to how much alcohol they drink.
  • Researchers found that people do not drink more when they’re feeling sad or upset, but they drink more when they're feeling happy.
  • The results are important because they challenge the idea that people drink mainly to cope with negative feelings, and now researchers want to look deeper into this topic.

Relationships between risk perceptions, emotions, and stress are well-documented, as are interconnections between stress, emotion, and media use. During the early COVID-19 pandemic, the public responded psychologically to the threat posed by the pandemic, and frequently utilized media for information and entertainment. However, we lack a comprehensive picture of how perceived risk, emotion, stress, and media affected each other longitudinally during this time.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogel drug delivery systems are designed to release a payload when prompted by an external stimulus. These platforms have become prominent in the field of drug delivery due to their ability to provide spatial and temporal control for drug release. Among the different external triggers that have been used, ultrasound possesses several advantages: it is non-invasive, has deep tissue penetration, and can safely transmit acoustic energy to a localized area.

Acute and chronic skin wounds due to burns, pressure injuries, and trauma represent a substantial challenge to healthcare delivery with particular impacts on geriatric, paraplegic, and quadriplegic demographics worldwide. Nevertheless, the current standard of care relies extensively on preventive measures to mitigate pressure injury, surgical debridement, skin flap procedures, and negative pressure wound vacuum measures. This article highlights the potential of adipose-, blood-, and cellulose-derived products (cells, decellularized matrices and scaffolds, and exosome and secretome factors) as a means to address this unmet medical need.

Individual Differences in Thresholds and Consumer Preferences for Rotundone Added to Red Wine.

Nutrients

August 2020

Sensory Evaluation Center, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Centre County, PA 16802, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Rotundone is a compound in certain grape skins (like Shiraz) that gives wines a peppery flavor, but about 40% of people can’t detect it, indicating a specific anosmia.
  • In a study with non-expert consumers in Pennsylvania, detection and rejection thresholds for rotundone in red wine were measured, highlighting that most people generally dislike the added rotundone flavor.
  • Focus group discussions revealed that many consumers find the idea of a "peppery" wine unappealing, suggesting that winemakers should consider this when creating and marketing such wines.

Importance: Cryptogenic sensory polyneuropathy (CSPN) is a common generalized slowly progressive neuropathy, second in prevalence only to diabetic neuropathy. Most patients with CSPN have significant pain. Many medications have been tried for pain reduction in CSPN, including antiepileptics, antidepressants, and sodium channel blockers.

Bacterial permeability family member A1 (BPIFA1), also known as short palate, lung, and nasal epithelium clone 1 (SPLUNC1), is a protein involved in the antiinflammatory response. The goal of this study was to determine whether BPIFA1 expression in asthmatic airways is regulated by genetic variations, altering epithelial responses to type 2 cytokines (e.g.
