Most cells divide into two daughter cells; however, some green algae can have different division patterns in which a single mother cell can sometimes give rise to up to thousands of daughter cells. Although such cell cycle patterns can be very complex, they are governed by the same general concepts as the most common binary fission. Moreover, cell cycle progression appears to be connected with size, since cells need to ensure that their size after division will not drop below the limit required for survival.

Oxygenic photosynthesis relies on accessory factors to promote the assembly and maintenance of the photosynthetic apparatus in the thylakoid membranes. The highly conserved membrane-bound rubredoxin-like protein RubA has previously been implicated in the accumulation of both PSI and PSII, but its mode of action remains unclear. Here, we show that RubA in the cyanobacterium sp PCC 6803 is required for photoautotrophic growth in fluctuating light and acts early in PSII biogenesis by promoting the formation of the heterodimeric D1/D2 reaction center complex, the site of primary photochemistry.

Magnesium (Mg) is the ubiquitous metal ion present in chlorophyll and bacteriochlorophyll (BChl), involved in photosystems in photosynthetic organisms. In the present study we investigated targets of toxic copper binding to the photosynthetic apparatus of the anoxygenic purple bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum. This was done by a combination of in vivo measurements of flash photolysis and fast fluorescence kinetics combined with the analysis of metal binding to pigments and pigment-protein complexes isolated from Cu-stressed cells by HPLC-ICPMS (ICP-sfMS).

Ferrochelatase (FeCh) is an essential enzyme catalyzing the synthesis of heme. Interestingly, in cyanobacteria, algae, and plants, FeCh possesses a conserved transmembrane chlorophyll / binding (CAB) domain that resembles the first and the third helix of light-harvesting complexes, including a chlorophyll-binding motif. The progression of the cell cycle in green algae dividing by multiple fission is, under otherwise unlimited conditions, affected by the growth rate, set by a combination of light intensity and temperature. In this study, we compared the cell cycle characteristics of Desmodesmus quadricauda at 20 °C or 30 °C and upon shifts between these two temperatures. The duration of the cell cycle in cells grown under continuous illumination at 20 °C was more than double that at 30 °C, suggesting that it was set directly by the growth rate.

Muscotoxins are cyanobacterial cyclic lipopeptides with potential applications in biomedicine and biotechnology. In this study, CCALA125 strain extracts were enriched by polymeric resin treatment, and subjected to HPCCC affording three cyclic lipopeptides (⁻), which were further repurified by semi-preparative HPLC, affording , , and , with a purity of 86%, 92%, and 90%, respectively. The chemical identities of ⁻ were determined as muscotoxins A and B, respectively, by comparison with previously reported ESI-HRMS/MS data, whereas was determined as a novel muscotoxin variant (muscotoxin C) using NMR and ESI-HRMS/MS data.

Robust photosynthesis in chloroplasts and cyanobacteria requires the participation of accessory proteins to facilitate the assembly and maintenance of the photosynthetic apparatus located within the thylakoid membranes. The highly conserved Ycf48 protein acts early in the biogenesis of the oxygen-evolving photosystem II (PSII) complex by binding to newly synthesized precursor D1 subunit and by promoting efficient association with the D2 protein to form a PSII reaction center (PSII RC) assembly intermediate. Allithiolanes: Nine Groups of a Newly Discovered Family of Sulfur Compounds Responsible for the Bitter Off-Taste of Processed Onion.

The compounds responsible for the bitter off-taste of processed onion ( Allium cepa) were studied. Using a series of sensory-guided HPLC fractionations, the existence of nine groups of hitherto unknown sulfur compounds has been revealed. On the basis of spectroscopic data (MS, NMR, and IR), it was found that these compounds, trivially named allithiolanes A-I, are members of a large family of structurally closely related derivatives of 3,4-dimethylthiolane S-oxide, with the general formulas of C H OS, C H OS, and C H OS ( x = 10-18, y = 18-30).

Protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO), the last enzyme that is common to both chlorophyll and heme biosynthesis pathways, catalyzes the oxidation of protoporphyrinogen IX to protoporphyrin IX. The antimicrobial, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of aqueous extracts of raw and culinary processed shiitake mushrooms were evaluated and compared with those of lenthionine (1,2,3,5,6-penta-thiepane), the principal aroma-bearing substance of the shiitake medicinal mushroom (Lentinus edodes). Antimicrobial activity was tested using a panel of 4 strains of bacteria, 2 yeasts, and 2 fungi. Cytotoxic properties were evaluated against 3 cell lines (HepG2, HeLa, PaTu), whereas the anti-inflammatory activity of tested samples was assayed based on their ability to attenuate the secretion of the cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α.
