A digital workflow by means of intraoral scanners and computer tomography has been used in dental implantology, allowing clinicians to be potentially more accurate and precise. Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM) and 3D models facilitate the process from treatment planning to the surgical procedure, up to the implant placement and final prosthesis. The aim of the present retrospective study was to evaluate a fully digital workflow for single-tooth implant rehabilitation.

Fatal opioid poisonings often involve methadone or morphine. This study aimed to elucidate if quetiapine, a widely used sedative antipsychotic medication, may increase the risk of fatal opioid poisoning by additive inhibitory effects on the central nervous system. We used data from 323 cases of fatal methadone or/and morphine poisonings autopsied from 2013 to 2020, a survey of 34 drug users, and performed blinded placebo-controlled studies in 75 Flinders Resistant Line rats receiving three cumulative intraperitoneal doses of vehicle, methadone (2.

Over the last few decades, a growing incidence of Banana Wilt (BW) has been detected in the banana-producing areas of the central zone of Venezuela. This disease is thought to be caused by a fungal−bacterial complex, coupled with the influence of specific soil properties. However, until now, there was no consensus on the soil characteristics associated with a high incidence of BW.

Malaria elimination urgently needs novel antimalarial therapies that transcend resistance, toxicity, and high costs. Our multicentric international collaborative team focuses on developing multistage antimalarials that exhibit novel mechanisms of action. Here, we describe the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a novel multistage antimalarial compound, 'Calxinin'.

Article Synopsis
  • Microbial diversity in silicate caves, particularly in opal speleothems from the Guiana Highlands, was investigated, revealing distinct microbial communities associated with different types of speleothems.
  • A total of 210,309 DNA reads were analyzed, resulting in 3184 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with soft speleothems showing unique microbial affiliations compared to hard speleothems.
  • Metabolic features inferred from these OTUs indicated significant roles for membrane transport and amino acid metabolism, potentially impacting the local pH and influencing the formation and weathering of silicate speleothems.

Background: Systemic arterial hypertension is one of the most common cardiovascular risks, corresponding to 45% of deaths involving CVDs. The use of natural products, such as medicinal plants, belongs to a millennial part of human therapeutics history and has been employed as an alternative anti-hypertensive treatment.

Objective: The present review aims to prospect some natural products already experimentally assayed against arterial hypertension through scientific virtual libraries and patent documents over the past 20 years.

Objective: Connections between craniocervical posture (CCP) and changes in teeth position have already been demonstrated; however, the defined pathway of relationship is still not clear. The aim of this study was to evaluate CCP modifications after rapid maxillary expansion therapy using rapid palatal expansion therapy (REP)/McNamara appliances.

Materials And Methods: A consecutive series of 35 subjects, aged between 6 and 14 years, with no prior history of orthodontic treatment, and requiring skeletal expansion of the upper arch, were selected and analyzed.

Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Immunology, Central University of Venezuela, Los Chaguaramos 1050-A, Caracas, 50109, Venezuela.

Tumour relapse, chemotherapy resistance, and metastasis continue to be unsolved issues in cancer therapy. A recent approach has been to scrutinise drugs used in the clinic for other illnesses and modify their structure to increase selectivity to cancer cells. Chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), known antimalarials, have successfully treated autoimmune and neoplastic diseases.

Background: Since 2015, the Global Technical Strategy (GTS) for Malaria 2016-2030 has been adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a comprehensive framework to accelerate progress for malaria elimination in endemic countries. This strategy sets the target of reducing global malaria incidence and mortality rates by 90% in 2030. Here it is sought to evaluate Brazil's achievements towards reaching the WHO GTS milestone in 2030.

Erectile dysfunction is a common complication associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and after prostatectomy in relation to cancer. The regenerative effect of cultured adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) for ED therapy has been documented in multiple preclinical trials as well as in recent Pase 1 trials in humans. However, some studies indicate that diabetes negatively affects the mesenchymal stem cell pool, implying that ASCs from T2DM patients could have impaired regenerative capacity.

Vet Parasitol Reg Stud Reports

January 2022

Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology Department, School of Veterinary Medicine, St. George's University, St. George's, Grenada, West Indies. Electronic address:

Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick-borne infectious disease highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, such as Venezuela. EP affects wild and domestic equids leading to several clinical presentations, from asymptomatic to severely affected animals. In this study, thirty-three (33) sport horses under regular training activities and from endemic regions of north-central Venezuela were submitted to an observational survey, case-control, to describe the presence of clinical signs and natural EP infections.

Venom from Amazonian scorpions of the genus contains components capable of eliciting a distinct clinical, mostly neurological, syndrome. This contrasts with the mainly autonomic manifestations produced after envenomation by congeneric southern and northern South American species. Herein, we summarize Pan-Amazonian scorpionism by synthesizing available toxinological, clinical, and molecular data gathered from all affected areas in Amazonia, including Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, and French Guiana.

A series of heterocyclic chloroquine hybrids containing either a β-phenethylamine fragment or a 2-aminoindane moiety were synthesized and screened in vitro as inhibitors of β-hematin formation and in vivo for their antimalarial activity against chloroquine-sensitive strains of Plasmodium berghei ANKA. Although these new compounds were not found to be more active than chloroquine in vivo, all new compounds significantly reduced heme crystallization with IC values < 1 μM. Compounds 12 and 13 were able to inhibit heme crystallization with IC values of 0.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has particularly affected countries with weakened health services in Latin America, where proper patient management could be a critical step to address the epidemic. In this study, we aimed to characterize and identify which epidemiological, clinical, and paraclinical risk factors defined COVID-19 infection from the first confirmed cases through the first epidemic wave in Venezuela. A retrospective analysis of consecutive suspected cases of COVID-19 admitted to a sentinel hospital was carried out, including 576 patient cases subsequently confirmed for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection.
