Article Synopsis
  • A novel coronavirus, COVID-19, emerged in China in December 2019, posing significant challenges for neurosurgeons in treating urgent patients while minimizing virus transmission.
  • Infection prevention strategies were implemented during emergency surgeries, resulting in no viral infections among medical staff or patients treated between January 23 and March 18, 2020.
  • Comparisons of patient wait times and surgery durations indicated longer wait times and longer craniotomy durations during the pandemic, with insights potentially beneficial for future medical responses to similar infectious disease outbreaks.

Three-dimensional (3D) visualization involves feature extraction and 3D reconstruction of CT images using a computer processing technology. It is a tool for displaying, describing, and interpreting 3D anatomy and morphological features of organs, thus providing intuitive, stereoscopic, and accurate methods for clinical decision-making. It has played an increasingly significant role in the diagnosis and management of liver diseases.

The current discharge criteria for COVID-19 require that patients have 2 consecutive negative results for reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) detection. Here, we observed that recurrent positive RT-PCR test results in patients with 3 consecutive negative results (5.4%) were significantly decreased compared with those in patients with 2 consecutive negative results (20.

Purpose: Spinal DSA is the "gold standard" technique to identify the spinal vascular diseases with venous hypertensive myelopathy (VHM). However, sometimes spinal DSA can find nothing in patients with confirmed spinal vascular anomalies. Many of the reasons are avoidable technical factors.

Background: OLA1 is a member of the GTPase protein family; unlike other members, it possess both GTPase and ATPase activities, and can bind and hydrolyze ATP more efficiently than GTP. OLA1 participates in cell proliferation, oxidative response, protein synthesis and tumorigenesis. However, whether OLA1 is also required for oocyte meiosis is still unknown.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common cancer and exhibits high morbidity and mortality in the world. We recently identified LHX3 as a preferentially expressed gene with a possible involvement in HCC.

Objective: To determine the expression, clinical relevance, prognostic significance and functions of LHX3 in HCC.

Dysregulation of microRNA‑3613‑3p (miR‑3613‑3p) was previously reported in endothelial cells (ECs) during heat stress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the precise role of miR‑3613‑3p in heat stress. In the present study, potential gene targets of miR‑3613‑3p in heat‑treated ECs were assessed, and the potential effects of miR‑3613‑3p were determined using Gene Ontology enrichment analysis.

In our previous study, we found that Shoutai pills could improve the embryo implantation rate as well as the levels of estrogen, progesterone and estrogen receptor in rats with stimulated ovulation. However, the mechanism is not clear. This study was designed to investigate the effect of Shoutai pills on the levels of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in rats with stimulated ovulation and the mechanism.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the molecular pathway(s) underlying the effect of metformin (MET) on the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9. Real-time polymerase chain reaction, Western blot analysis, and gelatin zymography were used to assay the effects of MET on MMP and AMPK signaling pathways. In addition, HTOG cells were treated with miR-29b-3p/a scramble control, H19/a negative control, or MET/PBS to explore possible signaling pathway(s) underlying the inhibitory effect of MET on MMP-2/MMP-9.

Background/aims: Xuezhikang (XZK), a red yeast rice extract with lipid-lowering effect, contains a family of naturally statins, such as lovastatin. In recent years, its effect beyond the regulation of lipids has also been received increasing attention. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the protective effects and possible molecular mechanisms of XZK on brain injury after cardiac arrest (CA) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and to investigate whether it has a dose-dependent effect and the difference with lovastatin.

Multi-level customized 3D printing for autogenous implants in skull tissue engineering.

Biofabrication

July 2019

Department of Neurosurgery, Xijing Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, 710032, People's Republic of China. Department of Neurosurgery, Hankou Branch of Central Theater General Hospital, Wuhan, 430010, People's Republic of China.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing of decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) has been achieved to ensure real physiological environments for tissue engineering. However, the limited source, biocompatibility, and biosafety of decellularized ECM are deficiencies in its large clinical use. Autogenous ECM is biocompatible, bioactive, and biosafe, making it an optimal choice for future clinical applications of 3D printing.

Intravenous Transplants of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Protect the Rat Brain From Ischemia-Induced Damage.

J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis

March 2019

Department of Emergency, Changzheng Hospital, The Second Military Medical University, Shanghai, PR China. Electronic address:

Background: Survival following cardiac arrest (CA) and subsequent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), to a great extent, depends on brain damage. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), as a source of paracrine growth factors and the capacity of neural differentiation may reduce this brain damage.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the protection of ADSCs to brain damage following CPR.
