Purpose: The purpose is to evaluate the effect of drainage from intentional extramacular holes after internal limiting membrane insertion to treat macular hole retinal detachment (MHRD) in highly myopic eyes.

Methods: This study is a retrospective, observational, and comparative case series that included 25 consecutive highly myopic eyes with MHRD. All eyes underwent standard 23-gauge vitrectomy, inverted internal limiting membrane insertion into the macular hole, subretinal fluid drainage from an intentionally created extramacular retinal hole, and tamponade with either silicone oil (SO group, n = 13) or perfluoropropane (CF group, n = 12).

Article Synopsis
  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is associated with ferroptosis-related processes, and this study investigates the role of the PRKAA2 gene in NSCLC diagnosis and treatment.
  • PRKAA2 was found to be overexpressed in NSCLC cells, promoting cell growth and reducing apoptosis and ferroptosis.
  • Silencing PRKAA2 elevated markers of ferroptosis while enhancing the effects of targeted treatments, indicating its potential as a therapeutic target for NSCLC.

College of Acupuncture and Orthopedics, Hubei University of Chinese Medicine, Wuhan, Hubei, China; Hubei Shizhen Laboratory, Wuhan, Hubei, China; Affiliated Hospital of Hubei University of Chinese Medicine (Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine), Wuhan, Hubei, China. Electronic address:

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD), an age-progressive neurodegenerative disease, is featured by a relentless deterioration of cognitive abilities. In parallel with the hypotheses of Aβ and tau, microglia-mediated neuroinflammation is a core pathological hallmark of AD. Promoting the transition of microglia from M1 to M2 phenotype and inhibition of neuroinflammatory response provide new insights into the treatment of AD.

This study aimed to elucidate the prognostic significance of serum soluble thrombomodulin (sTM), lung ultrasound score (LUS), and lactate levels in patients with extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with the goal of refining mortality risk prediction in this cohort. In a prospective cohort of 95 patients with extrapulmonary ARDS admitted to the intensive care unit, we investigated the primary endpoint of 28-day mortality. Utilizing Lasso-Cox regression analysis, we identified independent prognostic factors for mortality.

Impact of surgical approaches on stem position and hidden blood loss in total hip arthroplasty: minimally invasive vs. posterolateral.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

August 2024

College of Acupuncture and Orthopedics, Hubei University of Chinese Medicine, No. 11, Huangjiahu West Road, Hongshan District, Wuhan, 430065, Hubei Province, China.

Background: The surgical approach impacts the outcomes and recovery after total hip arthroplasty (THA), and approaches may affect the stem positioning. Contrary to the general concept of minimally invasive surgery, the direct anterior approach (DAA) results in more intraoperative blood loss. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare stem positioning and hidden blood loss (HBL) among three surgical approaches: the minimally invasive DAA, Orthopadische Chirurgie Munchen (OCM), and the traditional posterolateral approach (PLA).

Our research endeavors are directed towards unraveling the stem cell characteristics of lower-grade glioma patients, with the ultimate goal of formulating personalized treatment strategies. We computed enrichment stemness scores and performed consensus clustering to categorize phenotypes. Subsequently, we constructed a prognostic risk model using weighted gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA), random survival forest regression analysis as well as full subset regression analysis.

Background: Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most commonly diagnosed carcinomas in China, and postoperative radiotherapy plays an important role in improving the prognosis of patients. Carcinomas in different locations of the oesophagus could have different patterns of lymph node metastasis after surgery.

Methods: In this multicentric retrospective study, we enrolled patients with middle thoracic oesophageal squamous cell carcinomas from 3 cancer centres, and none of the patients underwent radiotherapy before or after surgery.

The methyltransferase 14, N6-adenosine-methyltransferase subunit (METTL14) and Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) have been identified as involved in the regulation of various cancer progression, while their mechanism and regulatory effect in retinoblastoma (RB) is still unclear. Cell colony formation, CCK-8 as well as Western blotting were used to evaluate the proliferation, apoptosis as well as p53 protein level of RB cell line. The METTL14 and CDKN2A levels were detected by qRT-PCR or Western blotting when METTL14 was up-regulated or CDKN2A was down-regulated.

Decreased DTI-ALPS and choroid plexus enlargement in fibromyalgia: a preliminary multimodal MRI study.

Neuroradiology

December 2023

Department of Anesthesiology, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Purpose: The glymphatic system is a fluid exchange pathway that clears waste products that is crucial for the maintenance of brain homeostasis. However, the exact role it plays in the emergence of fibromyalgia (FM) is still not fully understood. Here, we explored the changes in non-invasive MRI proxy probably related to the glymphatic function in FM patients, and explored brain-behavior relationships.

Topological alterations in white matter structural networks in fibromyalgia.

Neuroradiology

December 2023

Department of Anesthesiology, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Purpose: Neuroimaging studies employing analyses dependent on regional assumptions and specific neuronal circuits could miss characteristics of whole-brain structural connectivity critical to the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia (FM). This study applied the whole-brain graph-theoretical approach to identify whole-brain structural connectivity disturbances in FM.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used probabilistic diffusion tractography and graph theory analysis to evaluate the topological organization of brain white matter networks in 20 patients with FM and 20 healthy controls (HCs).

FGF13A interacts with NPM1 and UBF and inhibits the invasion of bladder cancer cells.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

October 2023

Beijing Institute of Tropical Medicine, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Bladder cancer (BC) invasion is a critical factor that impacts the prognosis and quality of life of patients. However, the underlying mechanisms of BC invasion is far from clear. Fibroblast growth factor 13 (FGF13), a non-secretory FGF, has been found to be ectopically expressed in various tumors and implicated in tumor development, but its potential association to BC has not been investigated.
