Ionizing radiation (IR) has been extensively used for cancer therapy, but the radioresistance hinders and undermines the radiotherapy efficacy in clinics greatly. Here, we reported that the spliceosomal protein thioredoxin-like 4B (TXNL4B) is highly expressed in lung tissues from lung cancer patients with radiotherapy. Lung cancer cells with TXNL4B knockdown illustrate increased sensitivity to IR.

Air pollution is increasingly recognized as an important environmental risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, epidemiologic evidence on long-term exposure to high air pollution concentrations with incident NAFLD is still very limited. Here, we constructed a population-based dynamic cohort involving 17,106 subjects who were enrolled between 2005 and 2013 and subsequently followed until 2017, combined with a high-resolution ambient fine particulate matter ≤2.

Article Synopsis
  • Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are special types of solar panels that work really well because of their unique properties, but they have a problem with losing energy at certain points called grain boundaries.
  • Scientists found a new way to fix this issue by mixing two materials that help improve how electricity moves in the solar cells and stop energy loss.
  • The new method made the solar cells much better, achieving high efficiency rates (up to 23.33%), and they remained powerful even after being tested for a long time.

Advanced hematite nanomaterials for newly emerging applications.

Chem Sci

March 2023

International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (WPI-MANA), National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) Namiki 1-1, Tsukuba Ibaraki 305-0044 Japan

Because of the combined merits of rich physicochemical properties, abundance, low toxicity, , hematite (α-FeO), one of the most chemically stable compounds based on the transition metal element iron, is endowed with multifunctionalities and has steadily been a research hotspot for decades. Very recently, advanced α-FeO materials have also been developed for applications in some cutting-edge fields. To reflect this trend, the latest progress in developing α-FeO materials for newly emerging applications is reviewed with a particular focus on the relationship between composition/nanostructure-induced electronic structure modulation and practical performance.

Aims: Somatic Symptom Scale-China (SSS-CN) has been applied to assess the presence and severity of somatization symptom disorders (SSD) in Chinese patients. However, there was no study comparing SSS-CN with Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15). The aim of this study was to compare the consistency of the SSS-CN with the PHQ-15 in evaluating SSD in patients with suspected psychological disorders in cardiovascular medicine and to explore the relationship between scores on the two SSD self-rating scales and scores on self-rating scales for anxiety or depression.

Background Cardiac failure is the primary cause of death in most patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PH). As pleiotropic cytokines, human resistin (Hresistin) and its rodent homolog, resistin-like molecule α, are mechanistically critical to pulmonary vascular remodeling in PH. However, it is still unclear whether activation of these resistin-like molecules can directly cause PH-associated cardiac dysfunction and remodeling.

Reticulon 3 (RTN3), an endoplasmic reticulum protein, is crucial in neurodegenerative and kidney diseases. However, the role of RTN3 in liver tissues has not been described. Here, we employed public datasets, patients, and several animal models to explore the role of RTN3 in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The urgent demand for large-scale global energy storage systems and portable electronic devices is driving the need for considerable energy density and stable batteries. Here, Se atoms are introduced between MoSe layers (denoted as MoSe ) by bond modulation to produce a high-performance cathode for potassium-ion batteries. The introduced Se atoms form covalent Se-Se bonds with the Se in MoSe, and the advantages of bond modulation are as follows: (i) the interlayer spacing is enlarged which increases the storage space of K; (ii) the system possesses a dual reaction mechanism, and the introduced Se can provide an additional conversion reaction when discharged to 0.

Pyroptosis, a newly discovered mode of programmed cell death (PCD), is important in the regulation of cancer development. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a non-histone nuclear protein that is closely related to tumor development and chemotherapy resistance. However, whether endogenous HMGB1 regulates pyroptosis in neuroblastoma remains unknown.

An autoimmune pleiotropic SNP modulates IRF5 alternative promoter usage through ZBTB3-mediated chromatin looping.

Nat Commun

Department of Bioinformatics, The Province and Ministry Co-sponsored Collaborative Innovation Center for Medical Epigenetics, Key Laboratory of Immune Microenvironment and Disease (Ministry of Education), National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, China.

Genetic sharing is extensively observed for autoimmune diseases, but the causal variants and their underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. Through systematic investigation of autoimmune disease pleiotropic loci, we found most of these shared genetic effects are transmitted from regulatory code. We used an evidence-based strategy to functionally prioritize causal pleiotropic variants and identify their target genes.

On-surface Ullmann coupling has been considered an appealing approach for the precise fabrication of carbon-based covalent nanostructures under solution-free conditions. However, chirality has seldom been discussed in Ullmann reactions. In this report, self-assembled two-dimensional chiral networks are initially constructed in a large area on Au(111) and Ag(111) after adsorption of the prochiral precursor, 6,12-dibromochrysene (DBCh).

An protonation-activated supramolecular self-assembly for selective suppression of tumor growth.

Chem Sci

February 2023

Department of Chemistry, State Key Laboratory of Elemento Organic Chemistry, Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering (Tianjin), Nankai University Tianjin 300071 China

An supramolecular self-assembly in the subcellular organelles could provide a new strategy to treat diseases. Herein, we report a protonation-activated supramolecular self-assembly system in the lysosomes, which could destabilize the lysosome membrane, resulting in the selective suppression of cancer cells. In this system, pyridyl-functionalized tetraphenylethylene (TPE-Py) was protonated in the lysosomes of A549 lung cancer cells to form octahedron-like structures with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), which impaired the integrity of the lysosome membrane, resulting in selective suppression of cancer cells.

The targeted and novel albumin-binding strategy has been attractive in the field of cancer therapy. Herein, we have developed an organic small molecule-based photosensitizer, Evans Blue-Pyropheophorbide-alpha (EB-Ppa), to treat solid tumors with extremely high photodynamic therapeutic efficiency, which is stable in serum-containing aqueous media and can effectively accumulate in the tumor site due to the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Particularly, after the photodynamic therapeutic treatment with EB-Ppa, all breast tumors (4T1 cell line) xenografted in nude mice shrink fast due to the singlet oxygen generated by EB-Ppa with laser irradiation.
