Article Synopsis
  • Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder linked to the FBN1 gene, impacting the skeletal, cardiopulmonary, and ocular systems, prompting research into how epigenetics influences the variability of symptoms in the disease.
  • Using the Illumina 850K DNA methylation array, researchers examined blood samples from patients with MFS and healthy individuals, identifying 1253 differentially methylated positions (DMPs) associated primarily with conditions like scoliosis and cardiomyopathy.
  • The findings suggest a crucial link between DNA methylation changes and clinical features in MFS, potentially leading to insights about why untreated patients experience severe symptoms and reduced lifespan.

Lithium-ion batteries with lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO) as a cathode and graphite as an anode are promising energy storage systems. However, the high-temperature storage mechanism under different states of charge (SOCs) conditions in batteries remains inadequately elucidated, and a clear storage policy has yet to be established. This study investigates and compares the capacity decay mechanism of a 63 mA h LiCoO/graphite battery at 45 °C under various SOCs (100%, 75%, 50%, 30%, 0%), while also analysing the underlying reasons for this decay.

Bacteria-based microbial immunotherapy shows various unique properties for tumor therapy owing to their active tropism to tumor and multiple anti-tumor mechanisms. However, its clinical benefit is far from satisfactory, which is limited by rapid systemic clearance and neutrophils-mediated immune restriction to compromise the efficacy, as well as non-specific distribution to cause toxicity. To address all these limitations, herein we reported a polyserotonin (PST) coated () with surface adsorption of DNAzyme (Dz)-functionalized MnO nanoparticles (DzMN) for tumor therapy.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between icariin and the osteoblastic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and the signal pathway involved.

Methods: We applied a universally accepted calcification model of VSMCs induced by β glycerophosphate. Then the VSMCs calcification was observed by treatment with icariin and/or inhibitors of estrogen receptors (ERs) and p38-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling.

Ischemic stroke is an acute serious cerebrovascular disease with high mortality and disability. Ferroptosis is an important regulated cell death (RCD) in ischemic stroke. 15-Hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH), a degrading enzyme of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), is shown to regulate RCD such as autophagy and apoptosis.

NHC Key Laboratory of Carcinogenesis, Hunan Key Laboratory of Oncotarget Gene, Hunan Cancer Hospital and The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University Changsha, Hunan, China.

5-methylcytosine (m5C modification) plays an essential role in tumors, which affects different types of RNA, the expression of downstream target genes, and downstream pathways, thus participating in the tumor process. However, the effect of m5C modification on RNA in tumors and the exact mechanism have not been systematically reviewed. Therefore, we reviewed the status and sites of m5C modification, as well as the expression pattern and biological functions of m5C regulators in tumors, and further summarized the effects and regulation mechanism of m5C modification on messenger RNA (mRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) and other RNA in tumors.

In semiconductors, generating charges catalysis is a highly challenging task and characteristic of heterojunction photoanodes. A dithiophene-4,8-dione spin-coated film layer has a positive effect on the holes (positive charge carriers) for a long time in BHJ films in the solid state of materials. The photoexcited holes created in the BHJ film can persist for long periods of time, which is beneficial for catalytic reactions.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced cardiovascular disease is a growing concern in the elderly population who have survived cancer, yet the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. We investigated the role of ALKBH5 (AlkB homolog 5), a primary N-methyladenosine (mA) demethylase, and its involvement in mA methylation-mediated regulation of targets in aging-associated doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.

Methods And Results: To validate the relationship between doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity and aging, we established young and old male mouse models.

Ultrafast-charging is the focus of next-generation rechargeable batteries for widespread economic success by reducing the time cost. However, the poor ion diffusion rate, intrinsic electronic conductivity and structural stability of cathode materials seriously hinder the development of ultrafast-charging technology. To overcome these challenges, an interfacial dynamics and thermodynamics synergistic strategy is proposed to synchronously enhance the fast-charging capability and structural stability of polyanion cathode materials.

Skillfully engineering surface ligands at specific sites within robust clusters presents both a formidable challenge and a captivating opportunity. Herein we unveil an unprecedented titanium-oxo cluster: a calix[8]arene-stabilized metallamacrocycle (TiL), uniquely crafted through the fusion of four "core-shell" {Ti@(TBC[8])(L)} subunits with four oxalate moieties. Notably, this cluster showcases an exceptional level of chemical stability, retaining its crystalline integrity even when immersed in highly concentrated acid (1 M HNO) and alkali (20 M NaOH).

Silicon, known for its high theoretical capacity and abundant resources, is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the application of silicon anode materials is limited by huge expansion and poor electricity of silicon. Herein, a novel free-standing Si/C anode (noted as Si/CNFs/CNTs) is synthesized by combining electrospinning and chemical vapor deposition, in which Si nanoparticles are composited with a conducting dual-network composed of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and deposited carbon nanotubes (CNTs).

Carbon dots from alcohol molecules: principles and the reaction mechanism.

Chem Sci

State Key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Central South University Changsha 410083 China

Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted significant attention in the energy, environment, and biology fields due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. However, owing to the multifarious precursors and complex reaction mechanisms, the production of carbon dots from organic molecules is still a mysterious process. Inspired by the color change of sodium hydroxide ethanol solution after standing for some time, in this work, we thoroughly investigated the reaction mechanism from alcohol molecules to carbon dots through a lot of experiments and theoretical calculations, and it was found that the rate-controlling reaction is the formation of aldehydes, and it is also confirmed that there is a self-catalysis reaction, which can accelerate the conversion from alcohol to aldehyde, further facilitating the final formation of CDs.
