The development of male sterile plants is a prerequisite to developing hybrid varieties to harness the benefits of hybrid vigor in crops and enhancing crop productivity for sustainable agriculture. In plants, cysteine proteases have been known for their multifaceted roles during programmed cell death, and in ubiquitin- and proteasome-mediated proteolysis. Here, we showed that Arachis diogoi cysteine protease (AdCP) expressed under the TA-29 promoter induced complete male sterility in Indian mustard, Brassica juncea.

In this study, the sulfate-reducing bacteria, (SRB) were identified and reported for the first time through analysis of functional gene , from the DNA of sediment samples collected from 10 sites of the Chilika lake. The finding illustrates Forty six Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs), identified from the DGGE which were obtained from the 10 sediment samples. Of these, 34 OTUs exhibited around 78-96% sequence similarity and 12 OTUs showed 97 to 100% sequence similarity to the gene of reported type strains of SRB.

Esterase isozymic variations were documented in the haemolymph of developed multivoltine and bivoltine silkworm breeds during unfavorable seed crop seasons of May - September using á- and â- napthylacetate separately to identify specific and nonspecific esterase having thermotolerant potentiality. Variations existed in the isozyme pattern with three bands (Est-2, 3 and 4) in pure Nistari race and other developed multivoltine and bivoltine breeds. Est-2 and Est-3 were non-specific esterases as they were observed when both á- and â-napthylacetate was used as substrates separately.

Digestive amylase has been identified as a useful marker for breeding in the silkwrom, Bombyx mori L (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), due to its wide genetic divergence, its role in better digestibility and robustness. Hyphae of Phyllactinia corylea produce two kinds of special branches on the host surface: adhesion bodies which serve as fungal attachment and stomatopodia which enter the leaf through stomata. Conidial germination on host and non-host surfaces was examined with a scanning electron microscope to explain the stimuli responsible for development of the special branches, and the involvement of host recognition in the process.
