The emergence of more than 40 new infectious diseases since the 1980s has emerged as a serious global health concern, many of which are zoonotic. In response, many international organizations, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), have developed strategies to combat these health threats. The need for rapid vaccine development has been highlighted by Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and mRNA technology has shown promise as a platform.

To let water jets land at the fire, pitch angle of the fire monitor has to be adjusted manually with successive rounds, which seriously affects the efficiency of fire extinguishing. To improve the efficiency, this paper proposes a technology for water jet trajectory modeling and landing point prediction to help with extinguishing automatically. Considering fragmentation and atomization of water jets, trajectories are analyzed and the predicted trajectory is closer to the real situation.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) presents persistent challenges due to subtype-specific limited efficacy and potential resistance to standard therapy, influenced by the dynamic reversible nature of epigenetic plasticity. This study aims to comprehensively explore the evolving BC epigenetic landscape, analyzing trends and evaluating the therapeutic potential of epigenetic drugs (epi-drugs) for BC treatment.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of BC epigenetic trials using ClinicalTrials.

Photoaging refers to the accumulation of skin damage which includes wrinkle formation, loss of elasticity, and epidermal thickening due to repeated ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The present study investigated the protective effects of fruit extract (Elaea) on UV-mediated photoaged skin of SKH1 hairless mice and compared the effects of Elaea with ascorbic acid. Although there was no difference in body weight between groups during experimental period, oral administration of 50-200 mg/kg Elaea once daily for 15 weeks significantly prevented an increase in skin weight, epithelial thickening of epidermis, and apoptosis caused by UV irradiation.

Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat solid cancers located in the pelvis. A considerable number of patients experience proctitis of varying severity, even for a considerable period after radiotherapy. These side effects are often long-lasting or progressively worsen despite multiple therapeutic efforts and are a primary cause of an unexpectedly low quality of life, even after successful cancer treatment.

Lean-burn engines are gaining attention for their lower CO emissions, higher thermal efficiency, and improved fuel economy compared to traditional combustion engines. However, they present some difficulty for reducing nitrogen oxides (NO) because of residual oxygen. To address this difficulty, NO storage reduction (NSR) system, which combines noble metals and NO adsorbents, is developed as a viable approach.

Gene therapy products (GTPs) used for incurable diseases can be expedited for early commercialization to fulfill unmet needs. This study analyzed the expedited programs available for GTPs in the US, EU, Japan, and South Korea using their regulatory authorities' websites, related regulations, and documents. In total, there were five expedited programs available for GTPs in the US, four in the EU, and three in both Japan and South Korea, of which four are tailored for GTPs.

Background: Perioperative adverse cardiac events (PACE), a composite of myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, congestive heart failure, arrhythmic attack, acute pulmonary embolism, cardiac arrest, and stroke during 30-day postoperative period, is associated with long-term mortality, but with limited clinical evidence. We compared long-term mortality with PACE using data from nationwide multicenter electronic health records.
Methods: Data from 7 hospitals, converted to Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model, were used.

Objective: Neuronata-R® (lenzumestrocel) is an autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BM-MSC) product, which was conditionally approved by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (KMFDS, Republic of Korea) in 2013 for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the present study, we aimed to investigate the long-term survival benefits of treatment with intrathecal lenzumestrocel.
Methods: A total of 157 participants who received lenzumestrocel and whose symptom duration was less than 2 years were included in the analysis (BM-MSC group).

Glutaraldehyde, a germicide for reprocessing endoscopes that is important for hygiene in the clinic, might be hazardous to humans. Electrolyzed acid water (EAW) has a broad anti-microbial spectrum and safety profile and might be a glutaraldehyde alternative. We sought to assess EAW disinfection of flexible endoscopes in clinical otorhinolaryngological settings and its in vitro inactivation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and bacteria commonly isolated in otorhinolaryngology.

Objective: Several clinical trials aimed at treating various autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), by introducing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been conducted. However, with refractory lupus nephritis (LN), the outcomes of MSC transplantation are not well known, and further validation is required. In particular, data concerning the safety and efficacy of LN treatment using bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) are still lacking.

Background: A single cycle (two repeated treatments) with intrathecal autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs, 26-day interval) showed safety and provided therapeutic benefit lasting 6 months in patients with ALS but did not demonstrate long-term efficacy. This phase III clinical trial (ALSUMMIT) protocol was developed to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of the combined protocol of single-cycle intrathecal therapy and three additional booster injections of BM-MSC (Lenzumestrocel) treatment in patients with ALS.
Methods: ALSUMMIT is a multicentre, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, sham procedure-controlled, phase III trial for ALS.

The flower buds of have been reported as a potent resource associated with anti-angiogenic, anti-tumor, anti-rheumatoid arthritis activities, as well as immunoregulation. This paper aimed to establish an optimal extraction method for flavonoids, as active phytochemicals, and to conduct a comparative analysis by profiling the different blooming stages. Optimized shaking extraction conditions from the design of experiments (DoE), such as minutely mixture design, 2 full factorial design, and polynomial regression analysis, involved an agitation speed of 150 rpm and temperature of 65 °C for 12 h in 56% (/) acetone solvent.

Ginseng berry exhibits a diverse range of pharmacological activities. The present study aimed to examine the neuroprotective effects of ginseng berry aqueous extract (GBE) against oxidative stress and to assess the impact of GBE on memory impairment in mice. In HT-22 cells, GBE pretreatment significantly inhibited glutamate- and hydrogen peroxide-mediated cytotoxicity in a concentration-dependent manner, while treatment with up to 100 µg/ml GBE alone did not change cell viability.

As a potential treatment of type 2 diabetes, a novel PPARγ non-TZD full agonist, compound 18 (BR102375) was identified from the original lead BR101549 by the SAR efforts of the labile metabolite control through bioisosteres approach. In vitro assessments of BR102375 demonstrated its activating potential of PPARγ comparable to Pioglitazone as well as the induction of related gene expressions. Further in vivo evaluation of BR102375 in diabetic rodent models successfully proved its glucose lowering effect as a potential antidiabetic agent, but the anticipated suppression of weight gain was not evident.

On our quest for new bioactive molecules from marine sources, two cyclic imines (, ) were isolated from a dinoflagellate extract, inhibiting the growth of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Compound was identified as a known molecule portimine, while was elucidated to be a new cyclic imine, named kabirimine. The absolute stereochemistry of was determined by crystallographic work and chiral derivatization, whereas the structure of was elucidated by means of spectroscopic analysis and computational study on all the possible isomers.
