The roles of coping style and social support in the experience of harm and distress among people affected by another person's gambling.

Addict Behav

December 2024

The Vanier Institute of the Family, Ontario, Canada; The Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Gambling-related harms can negatively impact the health and wellbeing of those around the person who gambles (affected others, AOs). The stress-strain-coping-support (SSCS) model proposes that the type of coping strategies AOs use, and the availability of social support, can effectively reduce some of these negative consequences. The current study aimed to explore the assumptions in the SSCS model by examining the role of coping styles and social support on the experience of harm and psychological distress in AOs.

The effectiveness of digital physical activity interventions in older adults: a systematic umbrella review and meta-meta-analysis.

Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act

December 2024

Appleton Institute, School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, Central Queensland University, Building 7, Bruce Highway, Rockhampton, QLD, 4701, Australia.

Background: Physical activity is important for healthy ageing, however most older adults are inactive. Numerous reviews with a range of inclusion criteria have been conducted on digital interventions to promote physical activity in older adults, and a synthesis of these is needed. Therefore, the objective of this study is to conduct an umbrella review and meta-meta-analysis on the effectiveness of digital interventions to promote physical activity in older adults.

Background: Prevention of type 2 diabetes is becoming an urgent public health concern in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, there is currently no evidence of a cost-effective approach of health behaviour interventions from community settings in low-income countries like Nepal. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the within-trial economic evaluation of a health behaviour intervention compared with usual care for managing type 2 diabetes in a community setting in Nepal.

This study explored measures of subjective and objective sleep health and the association with fall occurrence and falls risk for older adults. A longitudinal observational study was conducted with participants in residential aged care (n = 36) and community dwelling (n = 35) settings. At baseline, objective sleep data involved wearing wrist worn accelerometers and measuring falls risk by walking using the Quantitative timed up and go (QTUG) of a simple, cognitive, and motor task.

Effective Detection of Cloud Masks in Remote Sensing Images.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Faculty of Applied Sciences, Macao Polytechnic University, Macao SAR, China.

Effective detection of the contours of cloud masks and estimation of their distribution can be of practical help in studying weather changes and natural disasters. Existing deep learning methods are unable to extract the edges of clouds and backgrounds in a refined manner when detecting cloud masks (shadows) due to their unpredictable patterns, and they are also unable to accurately identify small targets such as thin and broken clouds. For these problems, we propose MDU-Net, a multiscale dual up-sampling segmentation network based on an encoder-decoder-decoder.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) in combination with different feed additives on growth performance, carcass traits, meat quality, enteric methane (CH) emissions, nutrient intake and digestibility, and blood parameters in feedlot beef cattle. In experiment (Exp.) 1, one hundred sixty-eight Nellore bulls (initial bodyweight (BW) 410 ± 8 kg) were allocated to 24 pens in a completely randomized block design.

Stakeholder Views on the Potential Benefits and Feasibility of an Equestrian Industry-Specific Health, Safety and Welfare Management System.

Animals (Basel)

November 2024

Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute, College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University, Adelaide, SA 5000, Australia.

With the growth of the equestrian industry, risk exposure and the obligation to maintain the health, safety, and welfare of humans and horses remain front and centre. As there has been no apparent reduction in non-fatal human horse-related injuries, we asked industry stakeholders to discuss their current management and risk mitigation practices and highlight potential barriers to improving these processes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 stakeholders from Australian equestrian work- ( = 9) and non-work- ( = 11) related organisations to determine the potential benefits and feasibility of adopting an industry-specific health, safety, and welfare (HSW) management system.

Do people rely more on habits when sleepy? An ecological momentary assessment study.

J Sleep Res

December 2024

Appleton Institute; School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, Central Queensland University, Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.

When self-regulatory resources are depleted, people tend to act more on "autopilot", with minimal forethought. It follows that when sleepy, people should be more likely to act habitually, based on learned cue-behaviour associations that trigger behaviour automatically when the cue is encountered. This ecological momentary assessment study investigated whether, over the course of a week, between-person differences and momentary within-person variation in daytime sleepiness were associated with the reported habit strength of behaviours.

Beyond the physical: The interplay of experienced weight stigma, internalised weight bias and depression in lipoedema.

Clin Obes

December 2024

NeuroHealth Lab, Appleton Institute, School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, Central Queensland University, Brisbane City, Queensland, Australia.

This study explored experienced weight stigma, internalised weight bias and depressive symptom severity in lipoedema, a chronic health condition that primarily affects women and involves painful and disproportionate adipose tissue. This study utilised an international cross-sectional online survey involving N = 1070 women over 18 years old (M = 48.9 years old) with self-reported diagnosed or suspected lipoedema.

Introduction: Sonography students require a deep understanding of structural anatomy, including where structures sit relative to one another. Additionally, they need to learn the complex task of identifying structures on medical images including X-rays, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound imaging. Anatomy can be taught online, but learning can be challenging for students.

Global plastic production is estimated to be 400 million tonnes per annum, with ~ 5.25 trillion fragments floating in our oceans. Microplastics (< 5 mm) have the potential to disproportionately accumulate and become trapped in mangroves and seagrass meadows, creating plastic 'sinks'.

  • * High levels of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and nickel were found in leather effluent, leading to significantly lower seed germination and reduced plant growth metrics compared to control groups.
  • * Results showed a marked decrease in chlorophyll content and an increase in antioxidant enzymes, indicating that the plants were under stress due to the toxic conditions, stressing the need for better wastewater treatment to protect agriculture and food security.

Background: There is increasing global support from governments and other funding bodies for community involvement in research, alongside a scientific and moral imperative for responsible and ethical research practice. Ninety per cent of Australian patient-led organisations in rare diseases have clearly articulated research priorities, indicating a desire among people affected by disease to be involved in research that impacts their communities. Philanthropic research, which is likely to have predominantly community-minded priorities, is worth over AU$1 billion annually and increased more than 100% between 2007 and 2017.
