A Model mesogen and its symmetrical Dimer made up of phenyl benzoate core unit are investigated by C NMR spectroscopy. The existence of layer order in smectic A and smectic C phases of Dimer mesogen is established by powder X-ray diffraction. The chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) tensors of Model mesogen are determined by 2D separation of undistorted powder patterns by effortless recoupling (SUPER) experiment and are utilized for calculating the order parameters employing the alignment-induced chemical shifts (AIS).

Non-covalent interactions play an important role for the framework formation of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks. Until now, π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding are the main reported forces facilitating the stacking of framework layers. Here, we present a two-dimensional anionic covalent organic framework based on tetratopic borate linkages, where layers are connected by ionic interactions between the linkage site and counter cations.

Inducing browning in white adipocytes has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach for addressing obesity. Bioactive that modulate the WAT microenvironment to induce trans browning in white adipocytes have been explored as a strategy to control unregulated lipid storage. However, relying on a single bioactive for modulating lipid metabolism has proven insufficient in obese individuals during human trials, because these compounds primarily activate a single biochemical pathway in promoting browning.

July 2024

Leather Processing Technology Department, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Central Leather Research Institute (CSIR-CLRI), Adyar, Chennai 600020, India.

Fabricating Janus nanoparticle-functionalized fabrics with UV protection, strength enhancement, self-cleaning properties, and wash durability, with a biocompatible nature, is crucial in modern functional fabrics engineering. Particularly, tailoring multifunctional nanoparticles capable of exhibiting several distinct properties, utilizing low-cost raw materials, and adhering to green chemistry principles is pivotal. A fabrication strategy for developing multifunctional reactive Janus nanoparticles, utilizing waste-derived natural polyphenol (quercetin-3-glucuronide, myricetin-3-galactoside, gossypin, phlorizin, kaempferol, myricetin-3-arabinoside)-integrated zinc-silica core-shell Janus nanoparticles with UV protection, strength enhancement, and self-cleaning properties, is proposed.

The newly synthesized chiral active [5]helicene-like tetrabenzofluorene (TBF) based highly red-emitting molecules exhibit flower-like self-assembly. These molecules display photophysical and structural properties such as intramolecular charge transfer, dual state emission, large fluorescence quantum yield, and solvatochromism. In TBFID, the indandione functional group attached on both sides as the terminal group offers an A-D-A push-pull effect and acts as a strong acceptor to cause more redshift in solution as well as in solid state as compared to TBFPA (TBF with benzaldehyde functional group in terminal position).

Chromium contamination from abandoned industrial sites and inadequately managed waste disposal areas poses substantial environmental threat. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has shown promising, eco-friendly solution to remediate Cr(VI) and divalent heavy metals. In this study, MICP was carried out for chromium immobilization by an ureolytic bacterium Arthrobacter creatinolyticus which is capable of reducing Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III) via extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production.

Chitosan dialdehyde (ChDA) was prepared from a three-step process initiated by thermal organic acid hydrolysis, periodate oxidization, and precipitation from native chitosan (NCh). The developed ChDA resulted in an aldehydic content of about 82 % with increased solubility (89 %) and maximum yield (97 %). The functional alteration of the aldehydic (-CHO) group in ChDA was established using vibrational stretching at 1744 cm.

Genetically encoded biocompatible anti-coagulant protein-coated coronary artery stents drive endothelialization.

Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces

June 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai 600020, India; Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, Ghaziabad 201002, India. Electronic address:

In response to the critical demand for advancements in coronary artery stents, this study addresses the challenges associated with arterial recoil and restenosis post-angioplasty and the imperative to encourage rapid re-endothelialization for minimizing thrombosis risks. We employed an innovative approach inspired by mussel adhesion, incorporating placental anticoagulant protein (AnnexinV) on stent design. The introduction of a post-translationally modified catecholic amino acid L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-Dopa), mimicking mussel characteristics, allowed for effective surface modification of Stainless steel stents through genetic code engineering in AnnexinV (AnxDopa).

The molecular dynamics study of thermotropic mesogens exhibiting the crystal phases is valuable in unraveling the complex global (collective) and local (noncollective) motions executed by liquid crystal molecules, which would further advance the existing knowledge on orientationally disordered crystalline (ODIC) phases. Toward the fulfillment of such a task, a combined nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry approach employing the fast field cycling (FFC) NMR (10 kHz-30 MHz) and high-field pulsed NMR (400 MHz) techniques is utilized to sample the broad frequency range offered by molecular motions in the crystal phase of 4-(trans-4'--hexylcyclohexyl)-isothiocyanatobenzene (6CHBT). The validity of the observed relaxation data is tested and interpreted by the Bloembergen-Purcell-Pound (BPP) model involving the superposition of four mutually independent Lorentzian spectral densities, reflecting molecular dynamical processes on different time scales.

Developing efficient catalysts for ammonia synthesis is increasingly crucial but remains a formidable challenge due to the lack of robust design criteria, particularly in addressing the activity and selectivity issues, especially in electrochemical nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR). In this study, we systematically investigated the catalytic potential of hexagonal boron nitride (BN) embedded with non-metal (C, Si, P and S) atoms as an electrocatalyst for the nitrogen reduction reaction using density functional theory (DFT) computations. The preference for non-metal-doped BN nanomaterials stems from their ability to suppress hydrogen evolution and their environmentally friendly nature, in contrast to transition metals.
