Anemia is a global public health and nutrition problem. However, data on its prevalence and potential causal factors in the 22 countries of the UNICEF Europe and Central Asia region are not systematically collected, analyzed, and reported, leading to challenges in formulating appropriate preventative strategies. We examined available anemia prevalence data among different population groups through reviewing survey reports from 2010 to 2022; conducted a literature review to explore underlying determinants of anemia including iron deficiency; and collated and reviewed program and policy documentation across the region.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: Anemia is a common global health problem, particularly in impoverished regions, with a high incidence rate. The condition is multifactorial, with iron deficiency being one of the most prevalent causes. Current treatment for anemia often relies on iron supplements or erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, although these therapies may show limited efficacy for some patients.

Photovoltaic-driven electrochemical (PV-EC) carbon dioxide reduction (COR) coupled with sulfide oxidation (SOR) can efficiently convert the solar energy into chemical energy, expanding its applications. However, developing low-cost electrocatalysts that exhibit high selectivity and efficiency for both COR and SOR remains a challenge. Herein, a bifunctional copper selenide catalyst is developed with copper vacancies (v-CuSe) for the COR-SOR.

Ferroptosis, a regulated form of cell death distinct from apoptosis, was first identified in 2012 and is characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation driven by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Since its discovery, ferroptosis has been linked to various diseases, with recent studies highlighting its potential in cancer therapy, particularly for targeting cancer cells that are resistant to traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. While iron has historically been central to ferroptosis, emerging evidence indicates that non-ferrous ions, especially manganese (Mn), also play a crucial role in modulating this process.

Oil-water separation materials with specialized wettability have garnered significant attention in the field of oil-water separation due to the advantages of simple use and no secondary pollution. However, the adsorptive contamination of the filter surface by impurity phases and surfactants can cause a shift in the wettability of the filter surface. For efficient oil-water separation and improved resistance to adherent contamination on the oil-water separation membrane surface, herein, superwetted Cu nanofilms and smooth hydrophobic surfaces were prepared on SSM substrates by one-step electrodeposition and immersion methods, respectively.
