Background: There is growing evidence that concentrations of environmental pollutants are previously associated with cardiovascular disease; however, it is unclear whether this association reflects a causal relationship.

Methods: We utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to investigate how environmental pollution affects the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease. We primarily employed the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method.

Background: There is growing evidence that concentrations of DNA methylation are associated with cardiovascular disease; however, it is unclear whether this association reflects a causal relationship.

Methods: We utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to investigate whether DNA methylation can affect the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in human life. We primarily performed the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method to analyze the causal effect of DNA methylation on multiple cardiovascular diseases.

Ephrin-A4 Ligand (EFNA4) Predicts Poor Prognosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Promotes Tumor Proliferation.

J Clin Exp Hepatol

April 2023

Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology Unit, Panyu Central Hospital, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Background/aims: Primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most lethal tumor diseases in the world. Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) are thought to play a vital role in HCC and Ephrin-A4 ligand (EFNA4) is a membrane-bound molecule that can activate RTKs through erythropoietin-producing hepatocellular (Eph) receptors. However, the specific role of EFNA4 remains unknown.

Background: P16 is a surrogate signature compensating for the specificity and/or sensitivity deficiencies of the human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA and Papanicolaou smear (Pap) co-test for detecting high-grade cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions or worse (HSIL+). However, traditional p16INK4A immunostaining is labour intensive and skill demanding, and subjective biases cannot be avoided. Herein, we created a high-throughput, quantitative diagnostic device, p16INK4A flow cytometry (FCM) and assessed its performances in cervical cancer screening and prevention.

Epstein-Barr virus-associated gastric carcinoma (EBVaGC) is one of the four subtypes of gastric carcinoma and its unique clinicopathological mechanism is unclear. Herein, the expression of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in EBVaGC was lower than of Epstein-Barr virus-negative gastric carcinoma (EBVnGC) and associated with a low frequency of lymph node metastasis of EBVaGC. Functional studies showed that the activation of ET-1/endothelin receptor type A (ETAR) axis could promote cell growth, migration, and antiapoptosis.

This work aims to investigate the therapeutic effect of ursolic acid (UA) plus insulin (In) on diabetic nephropathy (DN) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced T1DM rats. The experimental groups and operational details are as follows: A total of thirty-two SD rats were divided into four groups: the DN model group (DN, = 8), DN + In treatment group (DN + In, = 8), DN + In + UA administration group (DN + In + UA, = 8), and negative control group (control, = 8). After 8 weeks, changes in renal function indices and pathological damage were assessed.

Rationale: Dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DL) of the ovary is a rare mesenchymal tumor which is difficult to diagnose before surgery. The diagnose of DL was depended on the morphology, Immunohistochemical stains, and fluorescence in situ hybridization after the complete surgical resection.

Patient Concerns: We report a case of 63-year-old postmenopausal female who presented with a large pelvic mass and was initially thought to be an original ovarian tumor.

Specific protein 1 (Sp1) is a member of the Sp/Kruppel-like factor family, which regulates cellular processes of neurons in the nervous system. This study was performed to examine the regulatory role and the underlying mechanism of transcription factor Sp1 in neuropathic pain (NP)-like behaviors after spinal nerve ligation (SNL). Sp1 and histone deacetylase 1(HDAC1) expressions were determined in the C57BL6 mouse model with NP-like behaviors after SNL, which demonstrated that Sp1 and HDAC1 elevation occurred in neurons in the spinal dorsal horn of SNL mice.

The main treatment of breast cancer includes surgical resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and molecular targeted therapy, but the outcomes remain unsatisfactory. Previous studies demonstrated that echinacoside, microRNA (miRNA/miR)-4306 and miR-4508 were associated with lymph node metastasis, chemoresistance and self-renewal capability in breast cancer, but in-depth studies on the underlying mechanism of their anticancer effects have not been performed to date. In order to identify the role of miR-4306 and miR-4508, and the mechanism of the antitumor effect of echinacoside in breast cancer, the present study first examined the expression of miR-4306 and miR-4508 in breast cancer tissues to examine their possible role in the development of breast cancer, then evaluated the effect of echinacoside on the expression of miR-4306 and miR-4508 on the viability, apoptosis, cell cycle, migration, and invasion abilities of breast cancer cells to explore the anti-cancer effect of echinacoside and the involvement of miR-4306 and miR-4508.

December 2021

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Smart Healthcare Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), No. 1088 Xueyuan Rd., Shenzhen, Guangdong, 518055, P. R. China.

Cancer, one of the leading causes of death, has seriously threatened public health. However, there is still a lack of effective treatments. Nowadays, photodynamic therapy (PDT), relying on photosensitizers to trigger the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for killing cancer cells, has been emerging as a noninvasive anti-cancer strategy.

J Transl Int Med

June 2021

Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Peking University, Beijing100191, China.

Background And Objectives: Obesity is the accumulation of adipose tissue caused by excess energy in the body, accompanied by long-term chronic low-grade inflammation of adipose tissue. More than 50% of interstitial cells in adipose tissue are macrophages, which produce cytokines closely related to insulin resistance. Macrophage biology is driven by two polarization phenotypes, M1 (proinflammatory) and M2 (anti-inflammatory).
