Pain after open cardiac surgery can be severe and may persist for several days, potentially developing into chronic postsurgical pain. Herein the authors describe three patients who underwent open cardiac surgery via traditional median sternotomy approach. Postoperative pain was relieved in these patients via a novel, straightforward, ultrasound-guided parasternal intercostal block, peripheral regional anesthetic technique.

Background: Elderly populations are susceptible to critical limb ischemia (CLI), but conventional treatments cannot significantly decrease amputation and mortality. Although exercise is an effective "non-pharmacological medicine" targeting mitochondria to improve skeletal muscle function, few studies have focused on the application of exercise in CLI.

Methods: Elderly male C57BL/6 mice (14 months old) were used to establish a CLI model to assess the effect of exercise on perfusion, performance recovery, apoptosis, mitochondrial function, and mitochondrial turnover in gastrocnemius muscle.

Rapid and efficient detection of tumor marker at the early stages is one of the crucial challenges in cancer diagnostics and therapy. In this study, an ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor was fabricated by dual-amplified strategy for the detection of ultra-trace microRNA-141 (miRNA-141). Firstly, two split sequences contained G-quadruplex were connected by click chemistry-mediated nucleic acid strands self-assembly and the obtained complete G-quadruplex was complementary with miRNA-141 to formed DNA-RNA hybrid duplexes.

Background And Aims: The role of body mass index (BMI) for the prognosis of heart failure (HF) patients remains to be a great interest for a long time. However, the precise effect of dose-response for BMI and mortality risk in patients with HF is still unclear. We conducted a dose-response meta-analysis to quantitatively assess the effect of BMI on all-cause mortality in subjects with HF.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 1 infection is common and can emerge as outbreaks in developing areas, thus posing a threat to public health. However, due to the absence of feasible animal models, the mechanism of HE pathogenesis remains obscure. The HEV pathogenic mechanism has been suggested to be mediated by the immune system and not by direct viral duplication.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how Dendrobium candidum extract (DCEL) could enhance the expression of aquaporin-5 (AQP-5) to help treat Sjögren's syndrome (SS), which causes dry mouth due to salivary gland dysfunction.
  • Patients with SS who took DCEL for one week showed a 65% increase in saliva production compared to those who did not, indicating its potential effectiveness.
  • Histological analyses revealed that DCEL treatment led to higher levels of AQP-5 in the salivary glands, suggesting that it helps improve saliva secretion and alleviate dry mouth symptoms.
