Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how the innate immune system, specifically NK and NKT cells, responds in individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2, noting variations between severe and mild cases of COVID-19.
  • - Results showed that severe COVID-19 patients had lower frequencies of NK cells and abnormal expressions of important receptors compared to those with milder illness and healthy controls.
  • - The findings imply that the dysfunctional behavior of NK and NKT cells in severe cases may influence disease severity and outcomes across different populations.

Introduction: Gallstone disease is extremely prevalent in Western society, and the prevalence of common bile duct (CBD) stones with concomitant cholelithiasis increases significantly in the elderly. Different variants influence the treatment of this pathological entity, such as the origin of the stones, their location and quantity, comorbidities of the patient, impaction, and size of the lithos, the latter being an independent predictive factor. In most situations, choledocholithiasis can be resolved with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP); however, in complex cases, such as giant choledocholithiasis (GC), advanced surgical, endoscopic, and percutaneous techniques are required to remove gallstones.

is an opportunistic pathogen in HAIs with two facets: the most studied is the high rate of antimicrobial resistance, and the less explored is the long list of virulence factors it possesses. This study aimed to characterize the virulence genes carried by strains as well as the profile of cytokines related to inflammation, according to the resistance profile presented. This study aims to identify the virulence factors associated with MDR strains, particularly those resistant to carbapenems, and assess whether there is a cytokine profile that correlates with these characteristics.

The cytosolic enzymes N-Acetyl Transferases 1 and 2 (NATs) transfer an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to a xenobiotic substrate. NATs are regulated at the genetic and epigenetic levels by deacetylase enzymes such as sirtuins. The enzymatic expression of NAT1, NAT2, and SIRT1 was evaluated by flow cytometry, as well as the enzymatic activity of NATs by cell culture and HPLC analysis.

  • Cluster headache (CH) is a severe type of headache that often goes unrecognized and is typically treated late or incorrectly; this paper reviews recent treatment advancements.
  • A literature review identified effective pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for CH, categorized into three phases: transitional, acute, and preventive.
  • Key treatments include prednisone for transitional therapy, triptans and oxygen for acute attacks, and verapamil along with monoclonal antibodies for preventive measures, providing personalized options for episodic, chronic, and hard-to-treat CH cases.

Background: Intravascular venous (VUC) or arterial (AUC) umbilical catheter placement is the most frequent invasive procedure in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Either Wright's or Shukla's formula is used to introduce the catheters. However, Shukla's formula is associated with incorrect insertion, especially for newborns < 1500 g.

COVID-19 infection triggered a global public health crisis during the 2020-2022 period, and it is still evolving. This highly transmissible respiratory disease can cause mild symptoms up to severe pneumonia with potentially fatal respiratory failure. In this cross-sectional study, 41 PCR-positive patients for SARS-CoV-2 and 42 healthy controls were recruited during the first wave of the pandemic in Mexico.

Over the last few years, fluoxetine has been one of the most prescribed medications for the treatment of diverse psychiatric conditions in Mexico. Fluoxetine therapeutic effect is consequence of the joint action of the parent drug and its active metabolite, norfluoxetine. However, the clinical efficacy of fluoxetine, can be affected due to diverse factors, such as drug-drug interactions and the large interindividual variability in the pharmacokinetics of this drug.

Breast cancer (BRCA) is the most frequent cancer type that afflicts women. Unfortunately, despite all the current therapeutic strategies, many patients develop chemoresistance hampering the efficacy of treatment. Hence, an early indicator of therapy efficacy might aid in the search for better treatment and patient survival.

Background: Mycophenolic acid (MPA) is an effective oral immunosuppressive drug used to treat lupus nephritis (LN), which exhibits large pharmacokinetic variability. This study aimed to characterize MPA pharmacokinetic behaviour in Mexican LN patients and to develop a population pharmacokinetic model which identified factors that influence MPA pharmacokinetic variability.

Methods: Blood samples from LN patients treated with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) were collected pre dose and up to six hours post dose.

Aim: PF-06438179/GP1111 (PF-SZ-IFX) is a biosimilar of reference infliximab (Remicade ). This analysis compared the efficacy of PF-SZ-IFX and reference infliximab sourced from the European Union (IFX-EU) in patient subgroups from a randomized, comparative study of PF-SZ-IFX versus IFX-EU.

Methods: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis were randomized 1:1 to PF-SZ-IFX (n = 324) or IFX-EU (n = 326); study drug (3 mg/kg) was administered intravenously at weeks 0, 2, and 6, then every 8 weeks thereafter.

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is typically used in combination with prednisone and tacrolimus to avoid graft rejection in kidney transplant patients. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a population pharmacokinetic model of mycophenolic acid (MPA) in kidney transplant patients to investigate the influence of clinical and genetic covariates and to propose a dosage regimen based on the final model. Adult kidney transplant patients (>18 years old) receiving combination of MMF, prednisone and tacrolimus regimen were included.

To implement and validate an analytical method by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC MS/MS) to quantify mycophenolic acid (MPA) in kidney transplant patients. Quantification of MPA was performed in an ACQUITY UPLC H Class system coupled to a Xevo TQD detector and it was extracted from plasma samples by protein precipitation. The chromatographic separation was achieved through an ACQUITY HSS C SB column with 0.

Objective: This report aims to determine the safety, pharmacokinetics (PK) and efficacy of subcutaneous golimumab in active polyarticular-course juvenile idiopathic arthritis (polyJIA).

Methods: In this three-part randomised double-blinded placebo-controlled withdrawal trial, all patients received open-label golimumab (30 mg/m of body surface area; maximum: 50 mg/dose) every 4 weeks together with weekly methotrexate during Part 1 (weeks 0-16). Patients with at least 30% improvement per American College of Rheumatology Criteria for JIA (JIA ACR30) in Part 1 entered the double-blinded Part 2 (weeks 16-48) after 1:1 randomisation to continue golimumab or start placebo.

Association of cytokines polymorphisms with chronic peridontitis and rheumatoid arthritis in a Mexican population.

Acta Odontol Scand

May 2017

a Doctorado en Ciencias Biomedicas Basicas , Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Autonoma de San Luis Potosi , San Luis Potosi , Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the genetic relationship between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and periodontitis (PE), focusing on five specific SNPs in a group of Mexican subjects to understand their prevalence in those with RA, PE, both conditions, and healthy individuals.
  • The analysis showed no significant link for some SNPs (TNF-α -308 and IL-1α + 4845), but found a significant association for IL-1β + 3954 and IL-1β -511, with IL-1α -889 being nearly significant, indicating a complex genetic connection.
  • The findings suggest certain genotypes and haplotypes may be related to RA and PE, yet the overall genetic interplay
