The incidence and death toll due to SARS-CoV-2 infection varied time-to-time; and depended on several factors, including severity (viral load), immune status, age, gender, vaccination status, and presence of comorbidities. The RNA genome of SARS-CoV-2 has mutated and produced several variants, which were classified by the SARS-CoV-2 Interagency Group (SIG) into four major categories. The first category; “Variant Being Monitored (VBM)”, consists of Alpha (B.

Obesity is a multi-factorial metabolic syndrome that increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. We recently demonstrated the antiadipogenic efficacy of lutein using a 3 T3-L1 cell culture model. This study aimed to examine the antiobesity efficacy of lutein on high-fat (60% kcal fat) diet-induced C57BL/6J obese mice model.

Vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome-corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which causes coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) in humans, have been developed and are being tested for safety and efficacy. We conducted the cross-sectional prospective cohort study on 820 patients who were positive for SARS-CoV-2 and were admitted to Princess Krishnajammanni trauma care centre (PKTCC), Mysore, which was converted to a designated COVID hospital between April 2021 to July 2021. After obtaining the informed consent, RT-PCR report, vaccination certificate and patient history, patients were classified according to their vaccination status.

Folate (vitamin B) and its biologically active derivatives are well-known antioxidant molecules protecting cells from oxidative degradation. The presence of high glucose, often found in diabetic patients, causes oxidative stress resulting in cellular stress and inflammatory injury. Cells in organs such as the lung are highly prone to inflammation, and various protective mechanisms exist to prevent the progressive disorders arising from inflammation.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Gut microbiota (GM) are specific groups of microbes colonized in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They profoundly influence health, disease protection, and associated with metabolic activities, and play a vital role in the production of functional metabolites from dietary substances.

This study reports a novel bio-layer interferometry (BLI)-based SELEX for generation of high affinity aptamers against patulin. Unlike conventional SELEX, the present method enabled real-time monitoring of increasing affinity of the oligonucleotides to the toxin. After seven rounds of selection cycles, the enriched pool of aptamers was characterized by cloning and sequencing and clustered into two families based on similarity.

An absolute interlinks between inflammation and obesity with scarce investigations on the role of lutein in inflammation-induced obesity motivated us to explore the protective mechanism of lutein on adipogenesis-mediated inflammation in vitro by culturing RAW264.7 macrophages in adipocyte conditioned medium. The RAW264 macrophage cells were cultured with adipocyte-conditioned media, and the potency of lutein on the expression of adipocyte inflammation-associated protein markers (IL-1β, MCP-1, TNF-α, IL-6, NF-κB, and IKKα/β) were analyzed by western blotting.

Metabolic syndrome is a complex condition associated with a series of pathologies featuring glucose intolerance, diabetes, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, microalbuminuria, overweight, and obesity. It is also related to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), recognized as the most familiar cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome and, consequently, the one of NAFLD is constantly increasing worldwide.

The bifunctional flavin adenine dinucleotide synthetase (FADS) synthesizes the flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) co-factors essential for the function of flavoproteins. The Staphylococcus aureus FADS (SaFADS) produces FMN from riboflavin (RF) by ATP:riboflavin kinase (RFK) activity at its C-terminal domain. The N-terminal domain converts FMN to FAD under a reducing environment by FMN:ATP adenylyltransferase (FMNAT) activity which is reversible (FAD pyrophosphorylase activity).

Dietary food components have the ability to affect immune function; following absorption, specifically orally ingested dietary food containing lectins can systemically modulate the immune cells and affect the response to self- and co-administered food antigens. The mannose-binding lectins from garlic ( agglutinins; ASAs) were identified as immunodulatory proteins in vitro. The objective of the present study was to assess the immunogenicity and adjuvanticity of garlic agglutinins and to evaluate whether they have adjuvant properties in vivo for a weak antigen ovalbumin (OVA).

Glycans present in glycoproteins are structurally diverse and contribute to the carbohydrate pool of the milk. Goat milk is a leading non-bovine milk source, wherein glycan diversity of several glycoproteins remains unexplored. Herein, site-specific N-glycoprofiling of two major glycoproteins - immunoglobulin G (IgG) and lactoferrin (Lf) from goat milk was performed through RP-UHPLC Q-Tof MS/MS approach.

The molecular pathophysiology of cardiometabolic diseases is known to be influenced by dysfunctional ectopic adipose tissue. In addition to lifestyle improvements, these conditions may be managed by novel nutraceutical products. This study evaluatedthe effects of 11 Cameroonian medicinal spice extracts on triglyceride accumulation, glucose uptake, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and interleukin secretion in SW 872 human adipocytes after differentiation with 100 µM oleic acid.

We have earlier demonstrated that lutein effectively prevents hyperglycemia generated sustained oxidative stress in ARPE-19 cells by activating Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) signaling. Since evidence portrays an intricate connection between ER (endoplasmic reticulum) stress and hyperglycemia-mediated oxidative stress, we aimed to explore the protective mechanism of lutein on hyperglycemia-induced ER stress in ARPE-19 cells. To determine the effect of lutein, we probed three major downstream branches of unfolded protein response (UPR) signaling pathways using western blot, immunofluorescent and RT-PCR techniques.

In recent times, bi- and tri-metallic nanocomposites are being extensively studied to improve the catalytic surface and sensitivity of detection. In this study, we designed a formaldehyde dehydrogenase decorated Cys-AuPd-ErGO nanocomposite with fern like AuPd dendrites deposited on reduced graphene oxide (ErGO) on screen printed electrode (SPE) for determination of NADH and successfully demonstrated its application for detection of HCHO. This biosensor exhibited direct electron transfer by lowering the oxidation potential of NADH from +0.

Aims: Diabetic population have a twofold to threefold increased risk of developing liver cancer, and hyperglycaemia is a prime causative factor that propends the tumour cells to undergo aggressive metabolic growth. In this study, we aimed to examine the molecular mechanism by which lutein inhibits hyperglycaemia-induced human hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cell proliferation.
Methods: The effect of lutein on high glucose-induced proliferation was measured using the WST-1 reagent.

Flavin adenine dinucleotide synthetase (FADS), a bifunctional prokaryotic enzyme, is involved in the synthesis of two vital cofactors, flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). Here, we investigated the biochemical characteristics of FADS from Staphylococcus aureus (Sa), a pathogenic bacteria causing food-borne diseases. The SaFADS possesses riboflavin kinase (RFK) and FMN adenylyltransferase (FMNAT) activities that transforms riboflavin to FMN and FMN to FAD, respectively.
