Nongenetic optical control of neurons is a powerful technique to study and manipulate the function of the nervous system. This research has benchmarked the performance of organic electrolytic photocapacitor (OEPC) optoelectronic stimulators at the level of single mammalian cells: human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells with heterologously expressed voltage-gated K channels and hippocampal primary neurons. OEPCs act as extracellular stimulation electrodes driven by deep red light.

Additive manufacturing technology, referred as 3D printing technology, is a growing research field with broad applications from nanosensors fabrication to 3D printing of buildings. Nowadays, the world is dealing with a pandemic and requires the use of simple sensing systems. Here, the strengths of fast screening by a lab-on-a-chip device through electrochemical detection using 3D printing technology for SARS-CoV-2 sensing are combined.

Hydrazone-based molecular switches serve as efficient ratiometric pH-sensitive agents that can be tracked with F NMR/MRI and H NMR. Structural changes induced between pH 3 and 4 lead to signal appearance and disappearance at H and F NMR spectra allowing ratiometric pH measurements. The most pronounced are resonances of the CF group shifted by 1.

3D-printing technology provided numerous contributions to the health sector during the recent Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Several of the 3D-printed medical devices like personal protection equipment (PPE), ventilators, specimen collectors, safety accessories, and isolation wards/ chambers were printed in a short time as demands for these were rising significantly. The review discusses some of these contributions of 3D-printing that helped to protect several lives during this health emergency.

Bone is a dynamic biological tissue that acts as the primary rigid support of the body. Several systemic factors are responsible for pathologies that negatively affect its structural attributes. Although the bone is in continuous renewal by osteogenesis, metabolic diseases are the most common affectations that alter its natural equilibrium.

Biorefinery Approach for Aerogels.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2020

MINES ParisTech, PSL Research University, Center for Materials Forming (CEMEF), UMR CNRS 7635, CS 10207, 06904 Sophia Antipolis, France.

According to the International Energy Agency, biorefinery is "the sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable bio-based products (chemicals, materials) and bioenergy (fuels, power, heat)". In this review, we survey how the biorefinery approach can be applied to highly porous and nanostructured materials, namely aerogels. Historically, aerogels were first developed using inorganic matter.

Article Synopsis
  • Bone plays vital roles in the body, serving as a calcium phosphate reservoir and protecting organs, making its health crucial for overall metabolic balance.
  • Current diagnostic methods for bone conditions are often invasive and use ionizing radiation, prompting a need for noninvasive evaluation techniques.
  • This study introduces a piezo-actuated device for monitoring bone alterations through electromechanical impedance, showing that changes in bone density can be detected through electrical resistance measurements correlated to decalcification over time.

Herein, the synthesis of BiOCl nanoplatelets of various dimensions is demonstrated. These materials were prepared by anodic oxidation of Bi ingots in diluted HCl under dielectric breakdown conditions, triggered by a sufficiently high anodic field. Additionally, it is shown that the use of several other common diluted acids (HNO, HSO, lactic acid) resulted in the formation of various different nanostructures.

In the present work, we report the use of TiO nanotube (NT) layers with a regular intertube spacing that are decorated by Pt nanoparticles through the atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Pt. These Pt-decorated spaced (SP) TiO NTs are subsequently explored for photocatalytic H evolution and are compared to classical close-packed (CP) TiO NTs that are also decorated with various amounts of Pt by using ALD. On both tube types, by varying the number of ALD cycles, Pt nanoparticles of different sizes and areal densities are formed, uniformly decorating the inner and outer walls from tube top to tube bottom.

Introduction: Metallothioneins (MTs) are a class of ubiquitously occurring low-molecular-weight cysteine- and metal-rich proteins containing sulfur-based metal clusters. MT-3 exhibits neuro-inhibitory activity. The possibility to enhance the expression of MT-3 or protect it from degradation is an attractive therapeutic target, because low levels of MT-3 were found in brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients.

Electronic transport properties of graphene doped by gallium.

Nanotechnology

October 2017

Central European Institute of Technology-Brno University of Technology (CEITEC BUT) Purkyňova 123, 612 00 Brno, Czechia. Institute of Physical Engineering, Brno University of Technology, Technická 2, 616 69 Brno, Czechia.

In this work we present the effect of low dose gallium (Ga) deposition (<4 ML) performed in UHV (10 Pa) on the electronic doping and charge carrier scattering in graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition. In situ graphene transport measurements performed with a graphene field-effect transistor structure show that at low Ga coverages a graphene layer tends to be strongly n-doped with an efficiency of 0.64 electrons per one Ga atom, while the further deposition and Ga cluster formation results in removing electrons from graphene (less n-doping).

Ideally hexagonally ordered TiO nanotube layers were produced through the optimized anodization of Ti substrates. The Ti substrates were firstly covered with a TiN protecting layer prepared through atomic layer deposition (ALD). Pre-texturing of the TiN-protected Ti substrate on an area of 20×20 μm was carried out by focused ion beam (FIB) milling, yielding uniform nanoholes with a hexagonal arrangement throughout the TiN layer with three different interpore distances.

This article deals with the analysis of the relationship between the pull-off force measured by atomic force microscopy and the dimensions of water bridge condensed between a hydrophilic silicon oxide tip and a silicon oxide surface under ambient conditions. Our experiments have shown that the pull-off force increases linearly with the radius of the tip and nonmonotonically with the relative humidity (RH). The latter dependence generally consists of an initial constant part changing to a convex-concave-like increase of the pull-off force and finally followed by a concave-like decrease of this force.
