[Quality of life for men of different ages in the russian European North and its relationship with self-reported health and hormonal status].

Assessment of the quality of life for male inhabitants of the Russian European North demonstrated decreased indices of physical health component (the scale of role functioning determined by physical condition) and mental health component (the scales of social functioning and role functioning determined by emotional state and mental health) compared to the inhabitants of Siberia as a comparison group. Men aged up to 29 had the highest values at all scales. The values decreased with age.

This paper focuses on the personal and professional life of Nikolay Nikolayevich Blokhin, an outstanding Russian surgeon and highly innovative oncologist. In addition to a highly successful clinical career, he was a member and President of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences and Director of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences Institute of Experimental and Clinical Oncology. Although his reputation as a medical and political figure is firmly established within Russian medical history, his achievements in surgery and oncology now merit recognition by an international audience.

The major surface lipoglycan of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb), mannose-capped lipoarabinomannan (ManLAM), is an immunosuppressive epitope of M. tb.

[The use of mexidol in the intensive treatment of acute severe ischemic stroke].

Objective: To study the efficacy and safety of early use of mexidol in the acute stage of severe ischemic stroke (IS).

Material And Methods: A study included 112 patients, aged from 35 to 85 years, with a severe IS. Patients were stratified into two age and sex- matched groups.

Interleukin-37 (IL-37), a member of the IL-1 family, primarily functions as an anti-inflammatory cytokine, reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response. However, the expression and role of IL-37 in tuberculosis (TB) remains unknown. We aimed to measure serum levels of IL-37 and several important cytokines in 25 patients with active TB and to analyse their association with disease activity.

Introduction: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is being investigated widely for use in urologic pathology. The current imaging of urogenital cancers cannot be perfect, thus, routine methods demands new updates or inventions of alternative radiological scope. OCT presents so-called "live" optical biopsy.

MDCTA diagnosis of cerebral vessel disease among patients with arterial hypertension.

Background: to study changes involving cerebral vessels in patients with hypertension and various levels of total cardiovascular risk.

Material/methods: One hundred and thirty-four patients underwent CT-angiography of intracranial vessels. Ninety-eight of them were diagnosed with hypertension.

The role of IkappaBalpha in TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis in hepatic stellate cell line HSC-T6.

To investigate the role of NF-kappaB in TNF-alpha induced apoptosis in HSC-T6, a mutant IkappaBalpha was transfected into HSC-T6 cells by lipofectin transfection technique and its transient effect was examined 48 h after the transfection. The activation of NF-kappaB was detected by immune fluorescence cytochemistry and Western blotting with anti-p65 antibody. The apoptosis and the rate of inhibition by TNF-alpha in both transfected and untransfected HSC-T6 cells were measured respectively by FAC-Scan side scatter analysis and MTT methods.

Risk factors for stroke in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Stroke is a serious complication of diabetes but the risk factors for stroke in these patients are not fully defined. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the risk factors for stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The group comprised 208 patients with T2DM, and the mean duration of follow-up was seven years (range 4-11 years).

[Ultrasound study in the diagnosis of colon obstruction].

The authors present the results of their investigations into the use of routine transabdominal sonography and ultrasound irrigoscopy in the diagnosis of acute colon obstruction in 70 patients. In 55 patients, the cause of this pathology was tumor-induced obturation of colon lumen and in 15 cases, the pathology resulted from colon evacuation dysfunction due to congenital abnormalities, acquired stenosis due to inflammatory diseases. Ultrasound irrigoscopy was first applied to determine the presence and degree of colon obstruction and to establish its causes.

A case of phlegmonous gastritis diagnosed by echography.

Relying on their experience of revealing phlegmonous gastritis in a female patient aged 44, the authors suggest to use abdominal echography to diagnose this urgent condition in the screening of acute inflammatory abdominal diseases, leaning upon echographic evidence of hollow organ damages, which are noted in inflammatory and blastomatous gastric wall infiltration and leaving the last word to complete evaluation of clinical, echographic and laboratory data.

[The status of the immunity system in diphtheria].

The complex study of cell-mediated and humoral immunity characteristics, as well as nonspecific protective factors, in 30 diphtheria patients, 9 clinically healthy carriers and 54 healthy subjects was carried out. In healthy immunized subjects normal characteristics of all elements of immunity were observed in combination with high titers of antitoxins and sensitization of lymphocytes to diphtheria toxoid. In healthy carriers the presence of cell-mediated and humoral immunity to diphtheria was associated with disturbances of the metabolic activity of phagocytes and a decrease in the proliferation of lymphocytes in response to the mitogen.

Electrochemical therapy (ECT) for thyroid adenoma during acupuncture anaesthesia: analysis of 46 patients.

Between February 1989 and April 1993, 46 patients with thyroid adenoma were treated by electrochemical treatment (ECT) during acupuncture anaesthesia. After three months to four years follow up period, the cure rate was 97.8%.

IgM anti-preS2 monitoring during combined corticosteroid/interferon-alpha 2b therapy in chronic hepatitis B.

The biological significance of antibody reactivities towards the preS2 gene encoded proteins of HBV is not yet well known. We investigated the pretreatment IgM anti-preS2 (1-55) ad reactivity in 22 Chinese and 11 Swedish patients with active HBV disease. Significantly enhanced IgM anti-preS2 levels (titers greater than 1/1000) were observed in 48% (16/33) of these patients.

The interaction between native serum albumin and hepatitis B virus.

Purified hepatitis B virus particles were obtained from HBeAg positive serum by sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation and sephadex G-200 gel filtration. These virions formed a precipitation line in counterimmune electrophoresis with anti-albumin antibody, but the reaction could be inhibited by anti-HBs. After two months at 4 degrees C, another precipitating line was formed under the same condition which could not be inhibited by anti-HBs and was, thus, due to free albumin.
