Dental pulp (DP) is a connective tissue composed of various cell types, including fibroblasts, neurons, adipocytes, endothelial cells, and odontoblasts. It contains a rich supply of pluripotent stem cells, making it an important resource for cell-based regenerative medicine. However, current stem cell collection methods rely heavily on the enzymatic digestion of dissected DP tissue to isolate and propagate primary cells, which often results in low recovery rates and reduced cell survival, particularly from deciduous teeth.

While the visual estimation of systolic left ventricular function by experienced examiners closely aligns with quantitative methodologies, the accuracy of visual estimation in determining the severity of valvular regurgitation using colour flow Doppler assessment of native heart valves remains largely unexplored. This study analysed the ability of 262 physicians to visually estimate the severity of 12 native valve regurgitations by grading colour Doppler transthoracic echocardiography loops in an online questionnaire. The assessments of the participants were compared to standardized quantitative evaluations conducted by certified echocardiography experts.

Assessment of Age-Related Differences in Lower Leg Muscles Quality Using Radiomic Features of Magnetic Resonance Images.

J Imaging Inform Med

September 2024

Department of Molecular Imaging, School of Medical Sciences, Fujita Health University, 1-98, Dengakugakubo, Kutsukake-Cho, Toyoake-Shi, Aichi, 470-1192, Japan.

Sarcopenia, characterised by a decline in muscle mass and strength, affects the health of the elderly, leading to increased falls, hospitalisation, and mortality rates. Muscle quality, reflecting microscopic and macroscopic muscle changes, is a critical determinant of physical function. To utilise radiomic features extracted from magnetic resonance (MR) images to assess age-related changes in muscle quality, a dataset of 24 adults, divided into older (male/female: 6/6, 66-79 years) and younger (male/female: 6/6, 21-31 years) groups, was used to investigate the radiomics features of the dorsiflexor and plantar flexor muscles of the lower leg that are critical for mobility.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of [C]methionine PET (MET-PET) versus [F]fluorodeoxyglucose PET (FDG-PET) in detecting cancer, particularly in tumors located in the trunk, like prostate and breast cancers.
  • Unlike FDG-PET, which has limitations due to the moderate glucose uptake in cancers, MET-PET leverages the stronger reliance of tumors on methionine for better imaging results.
  • Results showed that MET-PET is superior to FDG-PET in identifying and delineating both primary and metastatic tumors, suggesting it could guide potential methionine-restriction therapy for patients.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) diagnosis and treatment are challenging since symptoms appear late in the disease's progression. Despite clinical risk scores, cardiac event prediction is inadequate, and many at-risk patients are not adequately categorised by conventional risk factors alone. Integrating genomic-based biomarkers (GBBM), specifically those found in plasma and/or serum samples, along with novel non-invasive radiomic-based biomarkers (RBBM) such as plaque area and plaque burden can improve the overall specificity of CVD risk.
