Heavy metal contaminants may influence tri-trophic interactions among plants, herbivores, and their natural enemies and affect the results of pest management practices. We examined how the widely distributed heavy metal cadmium (Cd) could modify interactions between kidney bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, and a predator, Orius sauteri (Poppius) by examining Cd effects on the feeding damage on leaves, the growth and reproduction of the thrips, and the feeding and plant location selection behaviors of predators.

A high-frequency, piezoelectric thin-film sensor was successfully deposited on a nickel-based superalloy bolt by radio frequency magnetron sputtering to develop a smart, nickel-based superalloy bolt. Ultrasonic response characterization, high accuracy, and repeatability of ultrasonic measurement of axial preload in nickel-based superalloy smart bolts are reported here and were fully demonstrated. The axial preload in the nickel-based superalloy smart bolt was directly measured by the bi-wave method (TOF ratio between transverse and longitudinal-mode waves) without using the traditional integration of a longitudinal and shear transducer.

We report here on a laser ultrasonic system to indirectly evaluate the preload force of different-frequency piezoelectric bolts. This newly developed system enables us to achieve the goal of non-contact excitation and synchronously collects the laser-induced ultrasonic signal by the combination of a smart piezoelectric sensor and a magnetically mounted transducer connector. A numerical model based on the finite element method (FEM) was developed to simulate the propagation and displacement distribution of laser-generated ultrasonic waves along the axial direction.

At present, timely and accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of Epstein- Barr Virus (EBV) infection-associated fever remain a difficult challenge. EBV encodes 44 mature microRNAs (miRNAs) that inhibit viral lysis, adjust inflammatory response, regulate cellular apoptosis, promote tumor genesis and metastasis, and regulate tumor cell metabolism. Herein, we have collected the specific expression data of EBV-miRNAs in EBV-related fevers, including infectious mononucleosis (IM), EBVassociated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH), chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV), and EBV-related tumors, and proposed the potential value of EBVmiRNAs as biomarkers to assist in the identification, diagnosis, and prognosis of EBVrelated fever, as well as therapeutic targets for drug development.

To explore the role of the social adaptability of different groups in human capital in an uncertain environment, this paper empirically tests the relationship between social adaptation and human capital by using a panel quantile regression model (QRPD) with the life satisfaction of 35 cities in China as an indicator. By selecting Nelder Mead and adaptive MCMC estimation methods, this paper finds that (1) the higher the level of social adaptation is, the more obvious the promotion effect on the level of human capital; (2) for eastern cities, social adaptation can promote the improvement of the human capital level; for central or western cities, the relationship between social adaptation and human capital is not obvious and depends on the method selected for estimation. To enhance the social adaptability of individuals, the government leadership should actively create conditions, carry out targeted social adaptation training and active adaptation skills exchange for different social groups in order to strengthen social adaptability and enhance human capital.

Reducing lunar dust adhesion to various material surfaces is important for protecting equipment from damage during lunar exploration missions. In this study, we investigate the lunar dust-mitigation ability and dust adhesion force of aluminum (Al) substrates prepared using different etching methods. Among them, composite etching methods (combining chemical and electrochemical steps) can result in multiscale structures with micro- and nanoroughness, reducing the contact area between the substrate and thus decreasing lunar dust adhesion.

Efficient, accurate molecular characterization of genetically modified (GM) organisms is challenging, especially for those transgenic events transferred with genes/elements of recipient species. Herein, we decipher the comprehensive molecular characterization of one novel GM rice event G281 which was transferred with native promoters and an RNA interference (RNAi) expression cassette using paired-end whole genome sequencing (PE-WGS) and modified TranSeq approach. Our results show that transgenes integrate at rice chromosome 3 locus 16,439,674 included a 36 bp deletion of rice genomic DNA, and the whole integration contains two copies of the complete transfer DNA (T-DNA) in a head-to-head arrangement.

Exogenous genes of transgenic crops are usually transferred to their wild-type relatives through pollen-mediated gene flow, which may change the ecological fitness and ability to invade wild populations, resulting in the weeding of wild plants and other unpredictable environmental impacts. In this study, the F generation of herbicide-resistant soybeans and wild soybeans was obtained by artificial pollination, F generation seeds were obtained by self-crossing, and the fitness of the parents and their F and F generations were tested. The foreign protein was expressed normally in the hybrid between transgenic and wild soybeans; however, the protein expression was significantly lower than that in transgenic soybeans.

Characterized as a semi-metal, gallium is a chemical element not found freely in the environment, but extracted as a by-product from other minerals. Despite of this, there are several gallium compounds with various applications, such as in the production of semiconductors, light emitting diodes; commercially as a potential cost reducer; pharmacology as cancer-related hypercalcemia, non-Hodgkin' lymphoma, breast and bladder cancer mainly and antimicrobial treatments. The latter will be emphasized in this work due to the contemporary emergence of the development of compounds with antimicrobial potential as a result of the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Bacteria readily form resilient phenotypes to counter environmental and antibiotic stresses. Here, we demonstrate a class of small molecules that inhibit a wide range of phenotypes and enable antibiotics to kill previously tolerant bacteria, preventing the transition of tolerant bacteria into a persistent population. We identified two proteins, type IV pili and lectin LecA, as receptors for our molecules by methods including a new label-free assay based on bacterial motility sensing the chemicals in the environment, the chemical inhibition of bacteriophage adsorption on pili appendages of bacteria, and fluorescence polarization.
