Background: This study explored the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on hemogram, serum biochemistry and hemostatic variables in female dogs undergoing laparoscopic-assisted ovariohysterectomy (OVH).
Materials: Thirty adult, mixed-breed, healthy female dogs were randomly divided into the following three groups: HBOT + SURG (exposed to two absolute atmospheres (ATAs) for 45 min followed by laparoscopic-assisted OVH), HBOT (exposed to two ATAs for 45 min) and SURG (laparoscopic-assisted OVH). Blood samples were collected at T0 (at the admission), at T1, 24 h after T0 (immediately after HBOT in the HBOT + SURG and HBOT groups, and immediately before anesthetic premedication in the SURG group), and at T2, 48 h after T0 (24 h after HBOT and anesthetic premedication).

Protein has become an increasingly valuable food component with high global demand. Consequently, unconventional sources, such as industrial and agroindustrial wastes and by-products, emerge as interesting alternatives to meet this demand, considering the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the transition to a circular economy. In this context, this work presents a review of the use of Steam Explosion (SE), a green technique that can be employed as a pretreatment for various waste materials, including bones, hide/leather, feathers, and wool, aimming the extraction of protein compounds, such as low molecular weight biopeptides, gelatin, and keratin, as well as to enhance the protein functionality of grains and meals.

Gelatin is the product resulting from collagen denaturation, which, in addition to conventional sources of extraction, can be recovered from wastes and byproducts rich in collagen widely generated by the industrial activities of poultry and cattle slaughterhouses and the fishing industry. Given the properties of good film-forming ability, nontoxicity, and biocompatibility for the addition of other compounds to obtain composite materials, gelatin is a potential polymer for the production of biodegradable films and, if extracted from waste sources, can contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution and positively impact several of the Sustainable Development Goals from the United Nations Organization. The gelatins extracted from porcine, poultry, and fish skins and untanned bovine hide wastes, or by-products can be used for the production of packaging films or edible coatings, while chromium-tanned leather wastes can be applied with mulching films in agriculture aiming at greater crop yield for food production.

Controlling food spoilage fungi remains a challenge for food industries, and regulations on the usage of chemical disinfectants are becoming restrictive. Then, this study aimed to evaluate electrolyzed water (EW) as a sustainable alternative for food spoilage fungi inactivation. The experiment was carried out according to the protocol for testing the antifungal effects of chemical sanitizers by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), using acidic electrolyzed water (AEW-AAC: 85 ppm; pH: 2.

Background: The kinetic parameters of peach rootstock are a major factor contributing to its nitrogen (N) uptake efficiency, which directly affects the yield and quality parameters. However, the impact of grafting on N kinetic parameters is not sufficiently known as rootstocks are grafted with other scion cultivars before being transplanted to the field. The objective of this study was therefore to evaluate whether the grafting of 'Okinawa' rootstock with the scion cultivar 'Chimarrita' can alter the kinetic parameters related to N uptake.

Using tolerant genotypes and the correct use of fertilizers can mitigate the negative effect of elevated Cu levels in the growing medium. In this context, the study aimed to evaluate the effects of excess Cu in the root system and the effectiveness of phosphorus (P) in minimizing the phytotoxicity of Cu in three genotypes: IAC 572 [(Vitis riparia x V. rupestris) x V.

Anticipating the harvest period of soybean crops can impact on the post-harvest processes. This study aimed to evaluate early soybean harvest associated drying and storage conditions on the physicochemical soybean quality using of mathematical modeling and multivariate analysis. The soybeans were harvested with a moisture content of 18 and 23% (d.

More than a century has passed since the first surgical mesh for hernia repair was developed, and, to date, this is still the most widely used method despite the great number of complications it poses. The purpose of this study was to combine stem cell therapy and laparoscopy for the treatment of congenital hernia in a swine animal model. Porcine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were seeded on polypropylene surgical meshes using a fibrin sealant solution as a vehicle.

The purpose of this study was to assess the unilateral prefemoral coelioscopic-assisted approach for ovariosalpingectomy in a d`Orbigny slider (Trachemys dorbigni) using a digital otoscope. Twenty healthy turtles were randomly assigned to one of two groups, for right (GR; n=10) or left (GL; n=10) prefemoral access, for coelioscopic-assisted ovariosalpingectomy. Anesthesia and surgery times, body weight, and ovary/oviduct weight data were recorded.

This study aims to evaluate available Cu and Zn levels in soil and related in soil organic matter (SOM) fractions (fulvic acids-FA, humic acids-HA, and humins-HU) after 10 years of application of pig slurry (PS) and pig deep litter (PL). Soil samples were collected from an experiment with black oat/corn succession under no-tillage in southern Brazil. The treatments consisted of fertilization of 90 and 180 kg N ha applied as PS and PL from 2002 to 2012 and a control treatment without any fertilization.

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive malignant tumor with low survival rates that is often diagnosed belatedly. Pericardial effusion is a common consequence in cases of mesothelioma, with pericardiocentesis and pericardiectomy indicated; therefor thoracocentesis is necessary to drain the contents no longer retained in the pericardium. The present report describes a mesothelioma-carrying dog with a history of cardiac tamponade that underwent thoracoscopic pericardiectomy and, later, thoracoscopic implantation of a fully implantable catheter to function as a thoracic drain.

This study aimed to assess the incidence, to quantify and to assess the diversity of fungi in a multigrain whole meal bread processing plant. Two hundred and eight one (n=281) samples were analyzed, including raw materials (n=120), air samples (n=136) and multigrain breads (n=25). Among the raw materials, the whole corn flour showed the highest counts of fungi (4.
