Residual olfactory dysfunction in coronavirus disease 2019 patients after long term recovery.

J Clin Neurosci

November 2021

Department of Neurology, Puai Hospital of Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430033, China. Electronic address:

Introduction: Hyposmia is among the most common symptoms of COVID-19 patients. Previous research has mainly described this issue at the disease's early stages. Because olfactory impairment can indicate neurological degeneration, we investigated the possibility of permanent olfactory damage by assessing hyposmia during the late recovery stage of COVID-19 patients.

The 'third wave' of the ongoing opioid overdose crisis in the United States (US) is driven in large measure by illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF), a highly potent synthetic opioid or an analog developed in clandestine laboratories primarily in China and Mexico. It is smuggled into this country either as IMF or as precursors. The southern border of the US is a frequent point of entry for smuggled IMF and the amounts are increasing year over year.

More than half of the people with dementia live in lower-middle income countries (LMIC), yet we lack research and evidence-based knowledge to guide health promotion and prevention strategies for cognitive decline. In the Philippines, the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and cardiovascular risk factors among older persons are high, making this population at high risk for developing dementia. This protocol describes a cluster randomized controlled trial that aims to investigate the efficacy of a multicomponent intervention to maintain cognitive performance among high-risk population.

Sustainability of Civil Structures through the Application of Smart Materials: A Review.

Materials (Basel)

August 2021

College of Civil Engineering, University Town, Key Lab of Fujian Province, Fuzhou University, 2 Xueyuan Road, Fuzhou 350108, China.

Every year, structural flaws or breakdowns cause thousands of people to be harmed and cost billions of dollars owing to the limitations of design methods and materials to withstand extreme earthquakes. Since earthquakes have a significant effect on sustainability factors, there is a contradiction between these constraints and the growing need for more sustainable structures. There has been a significant attempt to circumvent these constraints by developing various techniques and materials.

This study aims to analyze the effect of the differences in intensity and track of tropical cyclones upon significant wave heights and direction of ocean waves in the southeast Indian Ocean. We used the tropical cyclone data from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) starting from December 1997 to November 2017. The significant wave height and wave direction data are reanalysis data from Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), and the mean sea level pressure, surface wind speed, and wind direction data are reanalysis data from European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) from December 1997 to November 2017.

Augmentative and reconstructive rhinoplasty surgical procedures use autologous tissue grafts or synthetic grafts to repair the nasal defect and aesthetic reconstruction. Donor site trauma and morbidity are common in autologous grafts. The desperate need for the production of grafted 3D cartilage tissues as rhinoplasty grafts without the adverse effect is the need of the hour.

Snakebite envenoming is a global neglected disease with an incidence of up to 2.7 million new cases every year. Although antivenoms are so-far the most effective treatment to reverse the acute systemic effects induced by snakebite envenoming, they have a limited therapeutic potential, being unable to completely neutralize the local venom effects.

Electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG) signals provide clinical information relevant to determine a patient's health status. The nonlinear analysis of ECG and EEG signals allows for discovering characteristics that could not be found with traditional methods based on amplitude and frequency. Approximate entropy (ApEn) and sampling entropy (SampEn) are nonlinear data analysis algorithms that measure the data's regularity, and these are used to classify different electrophysiological signals as normal or pathological.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate how advance care planning (ACP) affects where patients die and their use of life-sustaining treatments at the end of life (EOL).
  • Data was collected from 3,196 deceased patients, revealing that 46.5% had discussions about ACP with healthcare providers.
  • The findings indicated that patients who engaged in ACP were significantly more likely to die at home and less likely to receive aggressive treatments like CPR and intubation in their final months.

June 2020

Department of Neurobiology and Neurology, Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing 100053, China; National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Disorders, Parkinson Disease Center of Beijing Institute of Brain Disorders, Beijing Key Laboratory on Parkinson's Disease, Beijing 100053, China. Electronic address:

Introduction: Hyposmia is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) and has been used to assist PD diagnosis and early screening of prodromal patients. Although the Brief Smell Identification Test (B-SIT) is the most commonly used olfactory test, its utility was limited by the culture difference in recognition of the smells included in the test. We have developed a new modified B-SIT test for Chinese (B-SITC), and validated and compare it with B-SIT in Chinese PD patients.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes impaired wound healing by affecting one or more of the biological mechanisms of hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling and a large number of cell types, extracellular components, growth factors, and cytokines. Interventions targeted toward these mechanisms might accelerate the wound healing process. To evaluate the wound healing efficacy of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO)-decellularized porcine acellular dermal matrix (ADM) combined with autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced DM rats.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is applied in a number of medical applications and HA of different molecular weight (Mw) are used in different pharmaceutical preparations. In determination of Mw by muti-angle laser light-scattering (MALS), refractive index increment (dn/dc) is an important parameter for accuracy. Herein, the influence of dn/dc on the Mw of HA in stroke-physiological saline solution is investigated by MALS in this work.
