Maize production under low-input agricultural systems in semi-arid areas of Sub-Saharan Africa faces significant challenges, primarily stemming from the synergistic impacts of climate variability and suboptimal agronomic practices. Harnessing soil microbiota, particularly arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), represents a pivotal strategy for bolstering low-input systems. However, their functional utility is contingent upon their compatibility with the prevailing environmental conditions and biotic interactions.

Heavy metal ions such as cadmium, mercury, lead, and arsenic in the soil cannot be degraded naturally and are absorbed by crops, leading to accumulation in agricultural products, which poses a serious threat to human health. Therefore, establishing a rapid and efficient method for detecting heavy metal ions in agricultural products is of great significance to ensuring the health and safety. In this study, a novel optimized spectrometric method was developed for the rapid and specific colorimetric detection of cadmium ions based on N-(2-Acetamido)-iminodiacetic acid (ADA) and Victoria blue B (VBB) as the chromogenic unit.

To counter the rising incidence of diabetes and to meet the daily protein needs, we created low glycemic index (GI) rice varieties with protein content (PC) surpassing 14%. In the development of recombinant inbred lines using Samba Mahsuri and IR36 amylose extender (IR36ae) as parental lines, we identified quantitative trait loci and genes associated with low GI, high amylose content (AC), and high PC. By integrating genetic techniques with classification models, this comprehensive approach identified candidate genes on chromosome 2 ( spanning the region from 18.

In plants due to their sessile nature, secondary metabolites are important components against different abiotic and biotic stress, such as extended darkness. For this reason, the variation of secondary metabolite content of the Arabidopsis thaliana HapMap natural population following 0-and 6-d darkness treatment were detected and the raw data of different accessions at two timepoints were deposited in the Zenodo database. Moreover, the annotated secondary metabolites of these samples are presented in this data descriptor, which we believe will be a usefully re-usable resource for future integrative analysis with dark-treated transcripts, proteins or other phenotypic data in order to comprehensively illustrate the multiomic landscape of Arabidopsis in response to the stresses exerted by extended darkness.

Rice panicle traits serve as critical indicators of both yield potential and germplasm resource quality. However, traditional manual measurements of these traits, which typically involve threshing, are not only laborious and time-consuming but also prone to introducing measurement errors. This study introduces a high-throughput and nondestructive method, termed extraction of panicle traits (EOPT), along with the software Panicle Analyzer, which is designed to assess unshaped intact rice panicle traits, including the panicle grain number, grain length, grain width, and panicle length.

A wide range of virus-like particles (VLPs) is extensively employed as carriers to display various antigens for vaccine development to fight against different infections. The plant-produced truncated variant of the hepatitis E virus (HEV) coat protein is capable of forming VLPs. In this study, we demonstrated that recombinant fusion proteins comprising truncated HEV coat protein with green fluorescent protein (GFP) or four tandem copies of the extracellular domain of matrix protein 2 (M2e) of influenza A virus inserted at the Tyr485 position could be efficiently expressed in plants using self-replicating vector based on the potato virus X genome.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation influences development and genome stability in organisms; however, its impact on meiosis, a special cell division essential for the delivery of genetic information across generations in eukaryotes, has not yet been elucidated. In this study, by performing cytogenetic studies, we reported that UV radiation does not damage meiotic chromosome integrity but attenuates centromere-mediated chromosome stability and induces unreduced gametes in Arabidopsis thaliana. We showed that functional centromere-specific histone 3 (CENH3) is required for obligate crossover formation and plays a role in the protection of sister chromatid cohesion under UV stress.
