Dept. Informática y Sistemas, Universidad de Murcia, IMIB-Arrixaca, Spain. Electronic address:

Background And Objective: Metrics are commonly used by biomedical researchers and practitioners to measure and evaluate properties of individuals, instruments, models, methods, or datasets. Due to the lack of a standardized validation procedure for a metric, it is assumed that if a metric is appropriate for analyzing a dataset in a certain domain, then it will be appropriate for other datasets in the same domain. However, such generalizability cannot be taken for granted, since the behavior of a metric can vary in different scenarios.

Mixed Integer Linear Programs (MILPs) are usually NP-hard mathematical programming problems, which present difficulties to obtain optimal solutions in a reasonable time for large scale models. Nowadays, metaheuristics are one of the potential tools for solving this type of problems in any context. In this paper, we focus our attention on MILPs in the specific framework of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), where the determination of a score of technical efficiency of a set of Decision Making Units (DMUs) is one of the main objectives.

We are witnessing the dramatic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic which, unfortunately, go beyond the impact on the health system. Until herd immunity is achieved with vaccines, the only available mechanisms for controlling the pandemic are quarantines, perimeter closures and social distancing with the aim of reducing mobility. Governments only apply these measures for a reduced period, since they involve the closure of economic activities such as tourism, cultural activities, or nightlife.

Accidents due to falls from height are one of the main causes of death in workplaces. Fall arrest systems (FAS) are designed to arrest the fall safely without injuring the accident victim. Their main mission is to restrain the body so as to prevent it from hitting the ground, generating forces and accelerations in the arrest process that are not harmful.

Most empirical studies examining the export competitiveness of a country in a target market are undertaken by focusing on supply, only analysing the group of competing countries. In addition, if the target market to be analysed is extensive, like the European Union, it is generally analysed as a whole. This study presents an evaluation of the tomato export competitiveness, from a differentiated demand perspective, analysing its main customers markets in the context of European Union.

The presence of unaccounted heterogeneity in simultaneous equation models (SEMs) is frequently problematic in many real-life applications. Under the usual assumption of homogeneity, the model can be seriously misspecified, and it can potentially induce an important bias in the parameter estimates. This paper focuses on SEMs in which data are heterogeneous and tend to form clustering structures in the endogenous-variable dataset.

Departamento de Informática y Sistemas, Universidad de Murcia, Campus de Espinardo, 30100, Murcia, Spain.

Background: The increasing adoption of ontologies in biomedical research and the growing number of ontologies available have made it necessary to assure the quality of these resources. Most of the well-established ontologies, such as the Gene Ontology or SNOMED CT, have their own quality assurance processes. These have demonstrated their usefulness for the maintenance of the resources but are unable to detect all of the modelling flaws in the ontologies.

Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) contain recommendations intended to optimize patient care, produced based on a systematic review of evidence. In turn, Computer-Interpretable Guidelines (CIGs) are formalized versions of CPGs for use as decision-support systems. We consider the enrichment of the CIG by means of an OWL ontology that describes the clinical domain of the CIG, which could be exploited e.

Evaluation of ontology structural metrics based on public repository data.

Brief Bioinform

March 2020

Departamento de Informática y Sistemas, Universidad de Murcia, IMIB-Arrixaca, Murcia, Spain.

The development and application of biological ontologies have increased significantly in recent years. These ontologies can be retrieved from different repositories, which do not provide much information about quality aspects of the ontologies. In the past years, some ontology structural metrics have been proposed, but their validity as measurement instrument has not been sufficiently studied to date.

Anogenital distance of women in relation to their mother's gynaecological characteristics before or during pregnancy.

Reprod Biomed Online

February 2014

Division of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Department of Health and Social Sciences, University of Murcia School of Medicine, Espinardo (Murcia) 30100, Spain; Regional Campus of International Excellence 'Campus Mare Nostrum', University of Murcia, Murcia 30003, Spain.

Animal models suggest that anogenital distance (AGD) at birth reflects androgen concentrations during in-utero development and predicts adult AGD. Several human observational studies show an association between menstrual cycle irregularities and a hyperandrogenic environment and that may result in a potential alteration of the female reproductive tract during in-utero development. This study examined associations between AGD of young women and their mother's gynaecological characteristics before or during pregnancy.
