Infectious complications in peritoneal dialysis (PD) remain a constant challenge, with atypical pathogens posing significant risks. This case from Thailand highlights the rare occurrence of , an often-overlooked non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM), as the causative agent in a catheter-related exit-site infection that progressed to peritonitis. Initially misattributed to from preceding exit-site infections, was ultimately identified as the primary pathogen through multiple effluent cultures and advance polymerase chain reaction sequencing.

Obesity is a significant barrier to renal transplantation due to associated surgical risks and postoperative complications. This case series presents five cases of obese patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who successfully achieved substantial weight loss using semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide (GLP) type-1 receptor agonist, thereby becoming eligible for transplantation. Each patient experienced significant weight reduction, ranging from 11.

Renal fibrosis is closely related to the prognosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The increase in cGMP reduces renal fibrosis. Soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) and phosphodiesterase (PDE) are key enzymes that maintain cGMP levels.

Parental genes can influence the phenotype of their offspring through genomic-epigenomic interactions even without the direct inheritance of specific parental genotypes. Maternal genetic variations can affect the ovarian and intrauterine environments and potentially alter lactation behaviors, impacting offspring nutrition and health outcomes independently of the fetal genome. Similarly, paternal genetic changes can affect the endocrine system and vascular functions in the testes, influencing sperm quality and seminal fluid composition.

Methods: A group of 37 hypercholesterolemic patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) and 9 patients requiring hemodialysis (HD) were selected for the study.
Results: EVs were comparably reduced by various LA methods (Thermo: 87.

Introduction: Colistin is used to treat hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia. However, direct drug deposition at the site of infection may improve its efficacy and reduce systemic exposure. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and tolerability of nebulized colistin among Indian patients diagnosed with pneumonia caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacilli in real-world settings.

It has been suggested that the novel selective phosphodiesterase 9 (PDE9) inhibitor may improve cardiac and renal function by blocking 3',5'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) degradation. 5/6 nephrectomized (5/6Nx) rats were used to investigate the effects of the PDE9 inhibitor (BAY 73-6691) on the heart and kidney. Two doses of BAY 73-6691 (1 mg/kg/day and 5 mg/kg/day) were given for 95 days.

Background: Remdesivir is a broad-spectrum antiviral drug that received emergency use authorization in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, its effectiveness in preventing mortality in COVID-19 patients who required intensive care was unclear.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 302 patients from intensive care units of a quaternary care center with moderate to severe COVID-19 illness and followed them until discharge between March 2020 and February 2021.

Pacemakers have been accessible for six decades, and clearly defined criteria for pacemaker implantation have been established. Within the contemporary clinical practice, two dependable pacing platforms exist leadless pacemakers and transvenous pacemakers. The aim of this meta-analysis is to compare the safety of leadless pacemakers to transvenous pacemakers.

Objective Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a complex hypersensitivity reaction to Aspergillus antigen mostly Aspergillus fumigatus that occurs almost exclusively in patients with asthma and cystic fibrosis. ABPA is an underdiagnosed and undertreated disease because of its presentation with various grades of severity in asthma patients. Data available regarding the clinical, serological, and radiological profile of ABPA patients is limited due to lack of consensus on diagnostic criteria and treatment guidelines.

Large placebo-controlled clinical trials have shown that sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) delay the deterioration of renal function and reduce cardiovascular events in a glucose-independent manner, thereby ultimately reducing mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and/or heart failure. These existing clinical data stimulated preclinical studies aiming to understand the observed clinical effects. In animal models, it was shown that the beneficial effect of SGLT2i on the tubuloglomerular feedback (TGF) improves glomerular pressure and reduces tubular workload by improving renal hemodynamics, which appears to be dependent on salt intake.

Renal replacement therapy becomes imperative when patients reach end-stage renal disease. Kidney transplant is the best modality of choice for the majority of patients, and deceased donor kidney transplantation is the major contributor in the majority of countries.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare and potentially life-threatening blood disorder caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of ADAMTS13 and can occur secondary to various conditions, including autoimmune diseases, infections, medications, pregnancy, and malignancies. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) inducing TTP is uncommon and not widely reported in the literature. Herein, we report a case of TTP induced by DKA in an adult patient.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare and potentially devastating blood disorder depicted by thrombocytopenia, fever, widespread small vessel hemolytic anemia, and neurological symptoms. The involvement of the renal and neurological systems is frequently reported in TTP; however, TTP-induced acute coronary syndrome is not widely reported. We describe a case of myocardial infarction induced by TTP in a patient who presented with the typical manifestation of acute coronary syndrome.

The aim of this meta-analysis is to systematically review published studies and identify clinically important factors predicting mortality among patients hospitalized for acute exacerbation of asthma. This study was a meta-analysis conducted in accordance with the MOOSE (Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines. A systematic search was carried out on online databases such as PubMed and EMBASE to identify articles on predictors of mortality among patients hospitalized for acute exacerbation of asthma.

The aim of this meta-analysis is to synthesize and critically evaluate the available evidence on the comparison of the efficacy and safety of metformin-based combination therapy versus metformin alone in children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We performed the present meta-analysis according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Eligible studies were identified using electronic searches for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and clinicaltrial.

The mechanisms of nephroprotection in nondiabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD) models by sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are not well defined. Five groups were established: sham-operated rats, placebo-treated rats with 5/6 nephrectomy (5/6Nx), 5/6Nx + telmisartan (5 mg/kg/day), 5/6Nx + empagliflozin (3 mg/kg/day), and 5/6Nx + empagliflozin (15 mg/kg/day). Treatment duration was 95 days.

In recent years, surgical trainees have been exposed to a lower volume of operative procedures. In part, this is due to the reduction in working hours and further disruption by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Much has been done to develop the techniques of surgical skill training outside of the operating theatre.
