Decades of crystallographic and NMR studies have produced canonical structural models of short DNA. However, no experimental method so far has been able to test these models in vivo, where DNA is long and constrained by interactions with membranes, proteins, and other molecules. Here, we employ high-resolution frequency-modulation AFM to image single long poly(dA)-poly(dT), poly(dG)-poly(dC), and lambda DNA molecules interacting with an underlying substrate that emulates the effect of biological constraints on molecular structure.

As MoSe chain nanowires have dimensions comparable to those of natural hydrogel chains (molecular-level diameters of ∼0.6 nm and lengths of several micrometers) and excellent mechanical strength and flexibility, they have large potential to reinforce hydrogels and improve their mechanical properties. When a MoSe-chain-nanowire-gelatin composite hydrogel is prepared simply by mixing MoSe nanowires with gelatin, phase separation of the MoSe nanowires from the gelatin matrix occurs in the micronetwork, providing only small improvements in their mechanical properties.

Here, we report synthesis of long (thousands of base pairs), uniform double-stranded (ds) DNA comprising short (6-15 base pairs) tandem repeats. The synthesis method is based on self-assembly of short (6-15 bases) half-complementary 5'-end phosphorylated single-stranded oligonucleotides into long ds polymer molecules and covalent association of the oligonucleotide fragments in the polymer by DNA ligase to yield complete non-nicked ds DNA. The method is very flexible in regard to the sequence of the oligonucleotides and their length.

The quest for a suitable molecule to pave the way to molecular nanoelectronics has been met with obstacles for over a decade. Candidate molecules such as carbon nanotubes lack the appealing trait of self-assembly, while DNA seems to lack the desirable feature of conductivity. Silver-containing poly(dG)-poly(dC) DNA (E-DNA) molecules have recently been reported as promising candidates for molecular electronics, owing to the selectivity of their metallization, their thin and uniform structure, their resistance to deformation, and their maximum possible high conductivity.

In this work, polyaniline (PANI) is synthesized via oxidative polymerization of aniline and purified using organic solvents where the emeraldine phase is isolated by employing a phase separation system. The above contributes to the increase in the percentage yield compared to previous works and the possibility of being used as a single phase. In addition, the PANI/AgNPs composite is prepared in situ at the polymerization of aniline, adding silver nitrate and glycine to create the AgNPs inside the PANI matrix by controlling the pH, temperature, time of reaction and incorporating a new purification technique.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are one of the most studied nanoparticles due to their anti-bacterial, -fungal, -viral, -parasitic, and -inflammatory properties. This raises the need to evaluate the toxicity and biological effects of AgNP in the immune system in order to develop new safer biomedical products. In this study, an AgNP formulation currently approved for veterinary applications was applied to mouse bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDC), considered important antigen-presenting cells of the immune system, to evaluate cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and any significant influence on expression of cellular markers associated with BMDC phenotype and maturation status.

Lithium anodes suffer from severe safety problems in liquid electrolyte systems that result from an unstable Li plating/stripping process and Li dendrite growth, leading to rapid degradation of Li metal batteries. A polyethylene (PE)-supported gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with excellent electrolyte uptake/retention capability was simply prepared in this paper by the construction of cross-linked polymer networks (PNs) on the surface of a poly(ethylenimine)-primed PE separator to stabilize the lithium anode. The highly delocalized negative charge of p-styrene sulfonate groups on PNs plays a role in regulating the Li and anion transport, giving rise to a high Li transference number.

Thermal conductive polymer composites are satisfying for thermal management of electronic devices. However, how to choose the sizes of thermal conductive fillers to get a high thermal conductivity of composites are still clueless and poor filler size matching will also affect the processability of the composites. Closest packing model was used to guide multiscale thermal conductive particles filling silicone rubber in this work.

Charge transport through molecular structures is interesting both scientifically and technologically. To date, DNA is the only type of polymer that transports significant currents over distances of more than a few nanometers in individual molecules. For molecular electronics, DNA derivatives are by far more promising than native DNA due to their improved charge-transport properties.

Since their discovery, liposomes have been widely employed in biomedical research. These nano-size spherical vesicles consisting one or few phospholipid bilayers surrounding an aqueous core are capable of carrying a wide variety of bioactive compounds, including drugs, peptides, nucleic acids, proteins and others. Despite considerable success achieved in synthesis of liposome constructs containing bioactive compounds, preparation of ligand-targeted liposomes comprising large quantities of encapsulated proteins that are capable of affecting pathological cells still remains a big challenge.

We demonstrate that the designed ankyrin repeat protein (DARPin)_9-29, which specifically targets human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER 2), binds tightly to gold nanoparticles (GNPs). Binding of the protein strongly increases the colloidal stability of the particles. The results of experimental analysis and molecular dynamics simulations show that approximately 35 DARPin_9-29 molecules are bound to the surface of a 5 nm GNP and that the binding does not involve the receptor-binding domain of the protein.

Balancing the size of the primary Si unit and void space is considered to be an effective approach for developing high performance silicon-based anode materials and is vital to create a lithium ion battery with high energy density. We herein have demonstrated the facile fabrication of coralloid-like nanostructured silicon composites (c-nSi/SiO@Cy) via sulfuric acid etching the AlSi alloy, followed by a surface growth carbon layer approach. The HRTEM images of pristine and cycled c-nSi/SiO@Cy show that abundant nanoscale internal pores and the continuous conductive carbon layer effectively avoid the pulverization and agglomeration of Si units during multiple cycles.

It is urgent to fabricate a class of green plastics to substitute synthetic plastics with increasing awareness of sustainable development of an ecological environment and economy. In this work, a novel green plastic constructed from cellulose and functionalized graphene has been explored. The mechanical properties and thermal stability of the resultant cellulose/functionalized graphene composite plastics (CGPs) equal or even exceed those of synthetic plastics.

While the transcription regulation of protein coding genes was extensively studied, little is known on how transcription factors are involved in transcription of non-coding RNAs, specifically of microRNAs. Here, we propose a strategy to study the potential role of transcription factor in regulating transcription of microRNAs using publically available data, computational resources and high throughput data. We use the H3K4me3 epigenetic signature to identify microRNA promoters and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-sequencing data from the ENCODE project to identify microRNA promoters that are enriched with transcription factor binding sites.

Migration of silver atoms from silver nano-particles selectively to a double-stranded poly(dG)-poly(dC) polymer leads to metallization of the DNA. As a result the DNA molecules become shorter and thicker (higher), as evident from the atomic force microscopy imaging analysis. The metalized molecules can be detected by transmission and scanning electron microscopy in contrast to the initial non-metalized ones.

A reliable method of deposition of aligned individual dsDNA molecules on mica, silicon, and micro/nanofabricated circuits is presented. Complexes of biotinylated double stranded poly(dG)-poly(dC) DNA with avidin were prepared and deposited on mica and silicon surfaces in the absence of Mg(2+) ions. Due to its positive charge, the avidin attached to one end of the DNA anchors the complex to negatively charged substrates.
