Cardiac surgery remains a field of medicine with a high percentage of postoperative complications, including infectious ones. Modern data indicate a close relationship of infectious disorders with pathological changes in the composition of the gut microbiome; however, the extent of such changes in cardiac surgery patients is not fully clarified. Tissue polarimetry holds great promise to improve the effectiveness of conventional cancer diagnostics and staging, being a fast, minimally invasive, and low-cost optical technique. We introduce an enhanced diagnostic method for colon specimens assessment by utilizing Stokes and Mueller matrix polarimetry. The proposed method makes use of experimental Mueller matrices, measured from healthy and tumor zones of a colon specimen, as input data for post-processing algorithms that include physical realisability filtering, symmetric decomposition and estimation of various polarization and depolarization metrics for colon specimen diagnostics.

COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have an immune imbalance when systemic inflammation and dysfunction of circulating T and B cells lead to a more severe disease. Using TREC/KREC analysis, we studied the level of mature naive T and B cells in peripheral blood of COVID-19 patients and its relationship with clinical and laboratory data. Mitochondrial dysfunction is currently considered one of the main causes of multiple organ failure in chronic inflammation and sepsis. The participation of microbial metabolites in disorders of bioenergetic processes in mitochondria has been revealed, but their influence on the mitochondrial membrane permeability has not yet been studied. We tested the influence of various groups of microbial metabolites, including indolic and phenolic acids, trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and acetyl phosphate (AcP), on the nonspecific permeability of mitochondrial membranes under conditions of acidosis, imbalance of calcium ions and excess free iron, which are inherent in sepsis.

This work aims to evaluate the prognostic value of the demographical and clinical data on long-term outcomes (up to 12 months) in patients with severe acquired brain injury with vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS/UWS) or a minimally conscious state (MCS). Patients ( = 211) with VS/UWS/UWS ( = 123) and MCS ( = 88) were admitted to the Federal Research and Clinical Center of Intensive Care Medicine and Rehabilitology after anoxic brain injury ( = 53), vascular lesions ( = 59), traumatic brain injury ( = 93), and other causes ( = 6). At the beginning of the 12-month study, younger age and a higher score by the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) predicted a survival.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is known to be associated with a wide range of human pathologies, such as cancer, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases. One of the possible ways of mitochondrial involvement in the cellular damage is excessive production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS) that cannot be effectively neutralized by existing antioxidant systems. In mitochondria, ROS and RNS can contribute to protein and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage causing failure of enzymatic chains and mutations that can impair mitochondrial function.

Analysis of sleep patterns in patients with chronic disorders of consciousness attracts attention from the perspective of the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease as well as the treatment. Yet, the very existence of normal sleep in patients in a vegetative or minimally conscious state is still a matter of debate. This paper presents a retrospective analysis of overnight polysomnographic records of 40 patients with chronic disorders of consciousness aimed at the possibility of establishing the connection between the degree of impaired consciousness and the presence and organization of polysomnographic graphical elements, associated with stages of sleep in normal individuals.
