Background: Management of patients in acute period of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage HuntHess grade IV-V is still a complex and unsolved problem, especially regarding surgical treatment and various complications.
Objective: To analyze postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing surgery in acute period of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage HuntHess grade IV-V between 2006 and 2020, as well as to assess various factors influencing treatment outcomes.
Material And Methods: We analyzed 163 patients who underwent surgery within 21 days after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage HuntHess grade IV-V.

The human microbiota produces metabolites that can enter the bloodstream and exert systemic effects on various functions in both healthy and pathological states. We have studied the participation of microbiota-related metabolites in bacterial infection by examining their influence on the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX) as a key enzyme of inflammation. The influence of aromatic microbial metabolites, derivatives of phenylalanine (phenylpropionic acid, PPA), tyrosine (4-hydroxyphenyllactic acid, HPLA), and tryptophan (indolacetic acids, IAA), the concentrations of which in the blood change notably during sepsis, was evaluated.

The profile of and dynamic concentration changes in tyrosine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan metabolites in blood are of great interest since they could be considered potential biomarkers of different disorders. Some aromatic metabolites, such as 4-hydroxyphenyllactic, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic, phenyllactic, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acids have previously demonstrated their diagnostic significance in critically ill patients and patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome. In this study, a sensitive method, including serum protein precipitation with methanol and ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) detection, was developed and validated for six phenyl- and five indole-containing acids in human serum.

One of the largest challenges to the implementation of cardiac cell therapy is identifying selective reparative targets to enhance stem/progenitor cell therapeutic efficacy. In this work, we hypothesized that such a target could be an urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR)-a glycosyl-phosphatidyl-inositol-anchored membrane protein, interacting with urokinase. uPAR is able to form complexes with various transmembrane proteins such as integrins, activating intracellular signaling pathway and thus regulating multiple cell functions.

Background: Lipids are critical in bone metabolism, and several studies have highlighted their importance. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between apolipoprotein B (apo B) and bone mineral density (BMD) at different skeletal sites (lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total femur) and to compare the influence of apo B with other traditional lipid markers.
Methods: The study included participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2011 and 2016 who had complete data for apo B and BMD at the three skeletal sites.
Obesity develops largely due to genetic factors, with the genetic polymorphism of lipid metabolism enzymes being of particular importance. However, it is still unclear how the genetic variants of one of the key enzymes in lipid transport, lipoprotein lipase (LPL), are associated with the endocrine function of mesenchymal tissues in obesity. The current study was aimed at the investigation of the rs328 gene variant association with adipokines and myokines levels, as well as lipid metabolism indices in the blood of children and adolescents of both genders with obesity.

The development of severe COVID-19, which is a complex multisystem disease, is thought to be associated with many genes whose action is modulated by numerous environmental and genetic factors. In this study, we focused on the ideas of the omnigenic model of heritability of complex traits, which assumes that a small number of core genes and a large pool of peripheral genes expressed in disease-relevant tissues contribute to the genetics of complex traits through interconnected networks. We hypothesized that primary immunodeficiency disease (PID) genes may be considered as core genes in severe COVID-19, and their functional partners (FPs) from protein-protein interaction networks may be considered as peripheral near-core genes.

Data from 156 autopsies of COVID-19 patients were retrospectively analyzed to investigate the pattern of thrombotic complications and factors associated with pulmonary artery thrombosis and thromboembolism. Thrombotic complications were observed in a significant proportion ( = 68, 44%), with pulmonary artery thrombosis the most frequently identified thrombotic event (42, 27%).

Background: The face is commonly affected in thermal injuries, with a demand for proper recognition and the correct choice of treatment to guarantee optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes. It is highly vascularized and often heals conservatively, highlighting the particular relevance of conservative treatment modalities, many of which require daily re-applications or dressing changes, which can be painful and tedious for both the patient and the healthcare providers. Motivated by encouraging results of a novel temporary nanofibrous epidermal layer, we herein present a case series of this technology in a case series of patients suffering from facial burns and treated in our Burn Center.

Objective: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is one approach to the potential improvement of patients with post-stroke or post-traumatic spasticity. However, little is known about whether and how such interventions alter supraspinal neural systems involved in the pathogenesis of spasticity. Objective: Given the lack of a unified tool for appraising the quality of educational resources for lay-rescuer delivery of adult basic life support (BLS), this study aimed to develop an appropriate evaluation checklist based on a consensus of international experts.
Methods: In a two-round Delphi study, participating experts completed questionnaires to rate each item of a predeveloped 72-item checklist indicating agreement that an item should be utilized to evaluate the conformance of an adult BLS educational resource with resuscitation guidelines. Consensus on item inclusion was defined as a rating of ≥7 points from ≥75% of experts.

The fight against neurodegenerative diseases is one of the key direction of modern medicine. Unfortunately, the difficulties in understanding the factors underlying the development of neurodegeneration hinder the development of breakthrough therapeutics that can stop or at least greatly slow down the progression of these diseases. In this review, it is considered the disruption of mitochondrial transport as one of the pathogenesis factors contributing to neurodegeneration using the examples of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Huntington's disease.

We hypothesized that the accumulation of weak effects of many rare functional variants throughout the exome may contribute to the overall risk in patients with severe disease. This assumption is consistent with the omnigenic model of the relationship between genetic and phenotypic variation in complex traits, according to which association signals tend to spread across most of the genome through gene regulatory networks from genes outside the major pathways to disease-related genes.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a T-cell-mediated autoimmune disease characterized by the damage of insulin-secreting β-cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. To date, its etiology is not fully understood, despite decades of active search for root causes, and that underlines the complexity of the disease pathogenesis. It was found that mitophagy plays a regulatory role in the development of autoimmune response during T1DM pathogenesis by preventing the accumulation of defective/dysfunctional mitochondria in pancreatic cells.

Post-COVID-19 syndrome is a complex of different symptoms, which results in a multisystemic impairment after the suffering from COVID-19 infection. The aim of the study was to reveal the clinical, laboratory, and gut disorders in patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome ( = 39) before and after taking part in the 14-day complex program of rehabilitation. A complete blood count, coagulation test, blood chemistry, biomarkers, and metabolites in serum samples, and gut dysbiosis were revealed in patients on the day of admission and after 14-day rehabilitation, in comparison with the variables of healthy volunteers ( = 48) or with reference ranges.
