Electronic address:

Mycoheterotrophic plants acquire nitrogen (N) directly from the soil and through their symbiotic fungi. The fungi-derived N has received considerable attention, but the contribution of soil-derived N has been largely overlooked. We investigated how the leafless, rootless, and almost mycoheterotrophic orchid Cymbidium macrorhizon obtains soil N by applying N-labeled ammonium nitrate in its natural habitat, and tracking metabolite accumulation and mycorrhizal fungal association after N application.

Development of a prediction model for 30-day COVID-19 hospitalization and death in a national cohort of Veterans Health Administration patients-March 2022-April 2023.

PLoS One

October 2024

Research and Development, Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle, Washington, United States of America.

Objective: The epidemiology of COVID-19 has substantially changed since its emergence given the availability of effective vaccines, circulation of different viral variants, and re-infections. We aimed to develop models to predict 30-day COVID-19 hospitalization and death in the Omicron era for contemporary clinical and research applications.

Methods: We used comprehensive electronic health records from a national cohort of patients in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 between March 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Rural and frontier communities are facing significant challenges with high rates of opioid use disorders (OUDs), prompting the establishment of the Rural Addiction Implementation Network (RAIN) in 2021 to promote evidence-based treatment and recovery services.
  • RAIN created a practice-based research network across four rural hospitals/clinics, conducting 20 addiction-related prevention, treatment, and recovery (PTR) activities while navigating barriers like COVID-19, staff engagement, and stigma surrounding addiction.
  • The initiative showcased the importance of trained facilitators and effective communication in overcoming implementation challenges, suggesting that RAIN's model could be replicated in other rural areas to combat addiction-related issues.

Article Synopsis
  • Pain intensity in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) can vary greatly, with a specific focus on high-impact chronic pain (HICP) among those affected.
  • * A study using data from the Johnston County Health Study found that approximately 15.5% to 21.2% of individuals with KOA are classified as having HICP, based on different measurement tools.
  • * Key findings revealed that increased kinesiophobia (fear of movement) and somatization (physical symptoms with no clear medical cause) are consistently linked to HICP, while other sociodemographic and clinical factors differ depending on the measurement used.

Introduction: The transfer of patients between hospitals, known as interhospital transfer (IHT), is associated with higher rates of mortality, longer lengths of stay and greater resource utilisation compared with admissions from the emergency department. To characterise the IHT process and identify key barriers and facilitators to IHT care, we examined the experiences of physician and advanced practice provider (APP) hospital medicine clinicians who care for IHT patients transferred to their facility.

Methods: Qualitative descriptive study using semistructured interviews with adult medicine hospitalists from an academic acute care hospital that accepts approximately 4000 IHT patients annually.

There is a growing emphasis on reducing the gap between research and routine practice. Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) science offers theories, models, and frameworks to enhance the implementation, impact, and sustainment of new programs and interventions. Few training opportunities are available that help leaders, researchers, clinicians, and staff (implementers) translate original research into practice settings in a more timely and effective manner without requiring significant time away from their primary clinical duties.

Challenges in the Development of NK-92 Cells as an Effective Universal Off-the-Shelf Cellular Therapeutic.

J Immunol

November 2024

Henan Province Engineering Research Center of Innovation for Synthetic Biology, School of Life Sciences and Technology, Xinxiang Medical University, Xinxiang, Henan, China.

The human-derived NK-92 cell-based CAR-NK therapy exhibits inconsistency with overall suboptimal efficacy and rapid in vivo clearance of CAR-NK92 cells in cancer patients. Analysis indicates that although pre-existing IgM in healthy individuals (n = 10) strongly recognizes both NK-92 and CAR-NK92 cells, IgG and IgE do not. However, only a subset of cancer patients (3/8) exhibit strong IgM recognition of these cells, with some (2/8) showing pre-existing IgG recognition.
