Background: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a major health concern, particularly for infants. In France, Nirsevimab, a long-acting monoclonal antibody to prevent RSV-associated lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) was available from September 2023. We described RSV-associated LRTI hospitalisations during the 2023-2024 season among infants younger than six months born at the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL), and evaluated the effectiveness of Nirsevimab against RSV-LRTI hospitalisation.

The COVID-19 pandemic and related preventive measures reduced influenza virus circulation, notably causing the disappearance of the B/Yamagata lineage of influenza viruses. In this Perspective, we discuss the implications that this development may have for global influenza epidemiology, and the adjustments that may need to be implemented concerning surveillance strategies and practices, laboratory safety protocols, and influenza vaccine formulations. The disappearance of the B/Yamagata lineage might indeed alter the dynamics of the influenza disease burden (although in a way that is difficult to predict at the moment), and associated diagnostic practices, and may also necessitate updated biosafety levels and revised influenza surveillance strategies.

Health care workers (HCWs) are primary health providers therefore ensuring their protection and recovery from Covid-19 is of high interest. We investigated post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) in HCWs who had previously been infected with SARS-CoV-2. Overall, 68 HCWs were classified as PASC according to duration of persisting symptoms.

Early after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the detection of influenza B/Yamagata cases decreased globally. Given the potential public health implications of this decline, in this Review, we systematically analysed data on influenza B/Yamagata virus circulation (for 2020-23) from multiple complementary sources of information. We identified relevant articles published in PubMed and Embase, and data from the FluNet, Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data, and GenBank databases, webpages of respiratory virus surveillance systems from countries worldwide, and the Global Influenza Hospital Surveillance Network.

RSV Severe Infection Risk Stratification in a French 5-Year Birth Cohort Using Machine-learning.

Pediatr Infect Dis J

September 2024

Center of Excellence in Respiratory Pathogens (CERP), Hospices Civils de Lyon and Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie (CIRI), Équipe Santé publique, épidémiologie et écologie évolutive des maladies infectieuses (PHE3ID), Inserm U1111, CNRS UMR5308, ENS de Lyon, Université Claude Bernard - Lyon 1, Lyon, France.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) poses a substantial threat to infants, often leading to challenges in hospital capacity. With recent pharmaceutical developments to be used during the prenatal and perinatal periods aimed at decreasing the RSV burden, there is a pressing need to identify infants at risk of severe disease. We aimed to stratify the risk of developing a clinically severe RSV infection in infants under 1 year of age.

This study reviews the impact of eligibility policies in the early rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine on coverage and probable outcomes, with a focus on New York City. We conducted a retrospective ecological study assessing age  65+, area-level income, vaccination coverage, and COVID-19 mortality rates, using linked Census Bureau data and New York City Health administrative data aggregated at the level of modified zip code tabulation areas (MODZCTA). The population for this study was all individuals in 177 MODZCTA in New York City.

In July 2023, the Center of Excellence in Respiratory Pathogens organized a two-day workshop on infectious diseases modelling and the lessons learnt from the Covid-19 pandemic. This report summarizes the rich discussions that occurred during the workshop. The workshop participants discussed multisource data integration and highlighted the benefits of combining traditional surveillance with more novel data sources like mobility data, social media, and wastewater monitoring.

Epidemiology of community-acquired pneumonia caused by S treptococcus pneumoniae in older adults: a narrative review.

Curr Opin Infect Dis

April 2024

Service d'Hygiène, Epidémiologie, Infectiovigilance et Prévention, Hospices Civils de Lyon.

Article Synopsis
  • This review highlights the key aspects of pneumococcal community-acquired pneumonia (pCAP) in older adults, including its prevalence, symptoms, and risk factors.
  • Older adults are more severely affected by pCAP due to age-related immune changes and higher rates of pre-existing health conditions, often presenting with atypical symptoms that can make diagnosis challenging.
  • The review stresses the urgent need for effective vaccination strategies to improve pneumococcal vaccination rates among the elderly, as well as addressing the complications from antibiotic-resistant strains that make treatment more difficult.

Immunogenicity of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis vaccination among pregnant women living with and without HIV.

AIDS

December 2023

South African Medical Research Council, Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit, Faculty of Health Sciences.

Objective: Vaccination during pregnancy with tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is recommended to protect the young infants against pertussis. There is a paucity of data on immune responses to Tdap in pregnant women with HIV (PWWH), and its impact on the protection of their infants has not been described.

Methods: In an open label phase IV clinical trial in South Africa, we evaluated the immunogenicity and safety of Tdap in PWWH compared with HIV-uninfected women.
