The demand for emulsion-based products is crucial for economic development and societal well-being, spanning diverse industries such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and oil extraction. Formulating these products relies on emulsifiers, a distinct class of surfactants. However, many conventional emulsifiers are derived from petrochemicals or synthetic sources, posing potential environmental and human health risks.

Iron oxide nanoparticles have been investigated due to their suitable characteristics for diverse applications in the fields of biomedicine, electronics, water or wastewater treatment and sensors. Maghemite, magnetite and hematite are the most widely studied iron oxide particles and have ferrimagnetic characteristics. When very small, however, these particles have superparamagnetic properties and are called superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs).

We, herein, investigated the effects of galactose on the activity of pyruvate kinase, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), complex II and IV (cytochrome oxidase) of the respiratory chain and NaK-ATPase in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and hippocampus of 30-day-old rats. We also determined the influence of the antioxidants, trolox, ascorbic acid and glutathione, on the effects elicited by galactose. Galactose was added to the assay at concentrations of 0.

Blue light exposure delays tomato seed germination by decreasing endosperm-degrading hydrolase activities, a process regulated by CRY1a-dependent signaling and the hormonal balance between ABA and GA. The germination of tomato seeds (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is tightly controlled by an internal hormonal balance, which is also influenced by environmental factors such as light.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is an alternative model system for drug screening, developing new products, and assessing ecotoxic effects of pollutants and biomonitor species in environmental risk assessment. However, the history and current use of transgenic zebrafish lines in ecotoxicology and toxicology studies remain poorly explored. Thus, the present study aimed to summarize and discuss the existing data in the literature about the applications of transgenic zebrafish lines in ecotoxicology and toxicology.

The strain CPMOR-1 expresses a flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-dependent L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO) with broad substrate specificity. Steady-state kinetic analysis of its reactivity towards the 20 proteinogenic amino acids showed some activity to all except proline. The relative specific activity for amino acid substrates was not correlated only with or values, since the two parameters often varied independently of each other.

Background: College students experience high stress levels during emergency remote classes in the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is not clear whether this is due to the summation effect of both stressors (classes and pandemic). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate predictors of stress in college students before and during remote classes five months after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic reverberated, posing health and social hygiene obstacles throughout the globe. Mutant lineages of the virus have concerned scientists because of convergent amino acid alterations, mainly on the viral spike protein. Studies have shown that mutants have diminished activity of neutralizing antibodies and enhanced affinity with its human cell receptor, the ACE2 protein.

Ketamine has emerged as a prophylactic agent against depressive-like behavior induced by stress. However, the possible pro-resilience effects of ketamine against inflammatory stressors-induced depressive-like behavior and the signaling pathways associated with this response remain to be determined. Therefore, this study investigated the ability of prophylactic ketamine administration to produce a pro-resilience effect against the depressive-like behavior induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS - 0.

The gene of , which plays a role in infection, encodes a hemerythrin-like protein (HLP). The crystal structure of an orthologue of Rv2633c, the HLP from , revealed that it possessed structural features that were distinct from other hemerythrins and HLPs. These and other orthologous proteins comprise a distinct class of non-heme di-iron HLPs that are only found in mycobacteria.

Ketamine has been reported to exert a prophylactic effect against stress-induced depressive-like behavior by modulating the guanosine-based purinergic system. However, the molecular pathways underlying its prophylactic effect and whether guanosine also elicits a similar effect remain to be determined. Spermidine (SPD) is an endogenous polyamine that plays a facilitatory role in memory acquisition and consolidation. Memory consolidation occurs immediately after learning and again around 3-6 hours later. Current evidence indicates that the polyamine binding site at the NMDA receptor (NMDAr) mediates the effects of SPD on memory.

Several attempts have been made to understand the role of cholecalciferol (vitamin D) in the modulation of neuropsychiatric disorders. Notably, the deficiency of vitamin D is considered a pandemic and has been postulated to enhance the risk of major depressive disorder (MDD). Therefore, this study aims to investigate the antidepressant-like effect of cholecalciferol in a mouse model of depression induced by corticosterone, and the possible role of glucocorticoid receptors (GR), NLRP3 and autophagic pathways in this effect.

Thus, this study investigated the ability of combined administration of guanosine plus ketamine to elicit an antidepressant-like effect associated with mTOR pathway modulation. The ability of this combined administration to exert an antidepressant-like effect in a model of depression was also evaluated.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase () C677T polymorphism associated with body fat accumulation could possibly trigger an inflammatory process by elevating homocysteine levels and increasing cytokine production, causing several diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of food intervention, and not folate supplements, on the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in overweight and obese women with the C677T polymorphism. A randomized, double-blind eight-week clinical trial of 48 overweight and obese women was conducted.

Rationale: Individuals with opioid use disorders often relapse into drug-seeking behavior after recalling memories linked to the drug use experience. Improving extinction efficacy has been used as a strategy to treat substance use disorders and suppress relapse. Although N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAr) agonists facilitate acquisition, consolidation, and extinction, no study has addressed whether spermidine (SPD), a natural polyamine ligand of the NMDA receptor, facilitates the extinction and reinstatement of morphine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP).

Background: This study aimed to survey the knowledge and use of mammals by the residents of the rural community of Capivara in the municipality of Solânea (Paraíba State, Northeast Brazil) and to propose a new method of using the use value as a tool for data analysis in ethnozoological surveys.
Methods: The uses attributed to mammals were recorded through semi-structured interviews conducted with the breadwinners (men and women) living in the community. The species were identified through guided tours, by descriptions made by the interviewees, and using specimens donated by them, as well as by comparison with the pertinent scientific literature (morphological and ecological).

Previous studies indicate that the modification of adrenergic neurotransmission in median raphe nucleus (MRN) enhances or removes an inhibitory influence on food intake, possibly serotonergic, due to a presence of serotonin-producing neurons in that nucleus. Therefore, the aim of this study is evaluated whether the activity of neurons in the MRN and dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) are affected by intracerebroventricular injection of adrenaline (AD) in free-feeding rats. Male Wistar rats with guide cannulae chronically implanted in the lateral ventricle were injected with AD followed by evaluation of ingestive behavioral parameters.
