To investigate the emission and concentration of PM and PM-related road dust over Agra, a typical semi-arid urban atmosphere of the Indo Gangetic Plain (IGP), a fine-resolution emission inventory and receptor modeling-based source apportionment was undertaken for the year 2019. On-road, the silt load of Agra (7-55 g/m of the road) was found to be 10 to 50 times higher than that reported in advanced countries. The silt load over Agra varied widely depending on road conditions, long-range transport, and land-use pattern.

The ellipsometric analyses reported in this paper present a novelty by bringing an in-depth optical investigation of some ternary organic blends. This study focuses on the tunability and control of the relative permittivity of active layers by varying the weight ratio of blended materials spin-coated as thin films. To investigate this, an extensive approach based on spectroscopic ellipsometry was conducted on ternary blend (D:A:A) thin films, involving a donor [D = chlorinated conjugated polymer (PBDB-T-2Cl)] and two acceptor materials [A = a non-fullerene (ITIC-F) and A = a fullerene (PCBM)].

In this paper, we investigate the decomposition of a toxic organic compound, Rhodamine B, by the photocatalytic activities of undoped and nitrogen-doped ZrO thin films, deposited using the HiPIMS technique. The investigation was performed in the presence and in the absence of HO, for two types of experimental arrangements: the irradiation of the films, followed by dipping them in the Rhodamine B solutions, and the irradiation of the films dipped in the solution. The two situations were named "direct irradiation" and "indirect irradiation", respectively.

In the global context of climate change and carbon neutrality, this work proposes a strategy to improve the light absorption of photocatalytic water-splitting materials into the visible spectrum by anion doping. In this framework, reactive high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) of a pure Zr target in Ar/N/O gas mixture was used for the deposition of crystalline zirconium oxynitride (ZrON) thin films with variable nitrogen doping concentration and energy band-gap. The nitrogen content into these films was controlled by the discharge pulsing frequency, which controls the target surface poisoning and peak discharge current.

The heterogeneous-homogeneous coupled Fenton (HHCF) processes combine the advantages of rapid reaction and the catalyst reuse, which makes them attractive for wastewater treatment. Nevertheless, the lack of both, cost-effective catalysts and the desirable Fe/Fe conversion mediators limit the development of HHCF processes. This study investigates a prospective HHCF process, in which solid waste copper slag (CS) and dithionite (DNT) act as catalyst and mediator of Fe/Fe transformation, respectively.

Atmospheric-pressure plasma (APP) has advantages for enhancing the adhesion of polymers and has to provide uniform, efficient treatment, which also limits the recovery effect of treated surfaces. This study investigates the effects of APP treatment on polymers that have no oxygen bonded in their structure and varying crystallinity, aiming to assess the maximum level of modification and the post-treatment stability of non-polar polymers based on their initial structure parameters, including the crystalline-amorphous structure. An APP reactor simulating continuous processing operating in air is employed, and the polymers are analyzed using contact angle measurement, XPS, AFM, and XRD.

Mining and smelting activities have brought potentially serious heavy metal(loid)s pollution to their surrounding locale. However, studies on microbial metabolic activities, community structure, and adaptation in soils proximal to non-ferrous metal mining and smelting areas are still lacking. Here the effects of biotic and abiotic characteristics of soil taken from sites surrounding inactive and active non-ferrous metal mine smelting facilities on microbial enzyme activity, microcalorimetry, and high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene barcoding were studied.

Recycling air pollution-controlled residues (APCR) generated from sewage sludge incinerators can be used for waste management, but the leaching of potentially toxic heavy metals from APCR poses environmental and human health issues. The present paper describes a procedure using APCR to produce alkali-activated materials and thereby realize their disposal. The effect of APCR on the compressive strength and drying shrinkage of the alkali-activated slag/glass powder was investigated.

Persistent and mobile organic compounds (PMOCs) are highly soluble in water, thereby posing a threat to water resource quality. Currently, there are no methods that can accurately quantify guanidine derivative PMOCs, other than 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG) and cyanoguanidine (CG), in aqueous media. In this study, we developed a quantitation method that combines solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography (LC)-tandem mass spectrometry to detect seven guanidine derivatives in aquatic environments and applied it to environmental water samples.

The environmental release and transfer of heavy metal(loids) from natural and anthropogenic sources to neighboring habitats can pose an ecological threat to the exposed biota and habitat, as well as a human health risk to the residents. However, analytical tools to identify the potential contamination source(s) and assess the impact of this transfer have not been well described. Soil samples were collected from affected areas proximal to non-ferrous metal(loid)s mining and smelting facilities.

Design and optimization of microalgae processes have traditionally relied on the application of unsegregated mathematical models, thus neglecting the impact of cell-to-cell heterogeneity. However, there is experimental evidence that the latter one, including but not limited to variation in mass/size, internal composition and cell cycle phase, can play a crucial role in both cultivation and downstream processes. Population balance equations (PBEs) represent a powerful approach to develop mathematical models describing the effect of cell-to-cell heterogeneity.

The photosensitized transformation of organic chemicals is an important degradation mechanism in natural surface waters, aerosols, and water films on surfaces. Dissolved organic matter including humic-like substances (HS), acting as photosensitizers that participate in electron transfer reactions, can generate a variety of reactive species, such as OH radicals and excited triplet-state HS (HS*), which promote the degradation of organic compounds. We use phthalate esters, which are important contaminants found in wastewaters, landfills, soils, rivers, lakes, groundwaters, and mine tailings.

Soil fungi play an important role in the soil biogeochemical cycle and are important biological indicators for the ecological remediation of mine tailings contaminated sites, therefore understanding the characteristics of soil fungal communities is a key aspect of pollution remediation. However, the influence of biological factors on the characteristics of fungal community diversity; assembly mechanisms and co-occurrence patterns of fungal community along environmental gradients around tailings are not well understood. In this study, soil samples from forest, agriculture and grass around tailings were collected to reveal the assembly mechanisms and co-occurrence patterns of soil fungal community and to quantify the contribution of abiotic and biotic factors to fungal diversity.

Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is a novel and promising technique in the agricultural field that has the potential to improve vegetal material by modulating the expression of various genes involved in seed germination, plant immune response to abiotic stress, resistance to pathogens, and growth. Seeds are most frequently treated, in order to improve their ability to growth and evolve, but the whole plant can also be treated for a fast adaptive response to stress factors (heat, cold, pathogens). This review focuses mainly on the application of NTP on seeds.

The overuse of the herbicide nicosulfuron has become a global environmental concern. As a potential bioremediation technology, the microbial degradation of nicosulfuron shows much promise; however, the mechanism by which microorganisms respond to nicosulfuron exposure requires further study. An isolated soil-borne bacteria Pseudomonas nicosulfuronedens LAM1902 displaying nicosulfuron, chlorimuron-ethyl, and cinosulfuron degradabilities in the presence of glucose, was used to determine the transcriptional responses to nicosulfuron exposure.
