Isolation, Characterization, and Genomic Analysis of Multidrug-Resistant Rahnella aquatilis from Fruits in China.

Many fruits are consumed raw and act as vehicles for spreading antibiotic-resistant bacteria to consumers; hence, preventing foodborne diseases and ensuring food safety of fresh fruits are challenging. In this study, we aimed to analyze contamination in fruits and characterize antibiotic resistance genes in pathogenic microorganisms isolated from fruits. Sixty fruit samples were collected and screened for pathogenic microorganisms.

Importation of a novel Indian Ocean lineage carrying E1-K211E and E2-V264A of Chikungunya Virus in Zhejiang Province, China, in 2019.

The chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is widespread. In Zhejiang province, China, CHIKV infection is often associated with travelers from tropical and subtropical countries. In the present study, three CHIKV isolates from serum samples of travelers in Zhejiang province in 2019 were sequenced, and phylogenetically analyzed to study their molecular characteristics.

Increasing incidence of and persistent reporting of in imported malaria cases: an analysis of 9-year surveillance data in four areas of China.

Background: This study aimed at exploring the epidemiological pattern of imported malaria in China before malaria elimination in 2021, to provide evidence-based data for preventing malaria re-establishment in China.

Methods: Nine-year surveillance data on imported malaria in four provincial-level administrative divisions (PLADs) (Anhui, Chongqing, Guangxi, and Zhejiang) between 2011 and 2019 were thoroughly collected and analyzed.

Results: A quite stable trend in imported malaria cases between 2011 and 2019 was observed.

Aspirin ameliorates the neurotoxicity of benzo[a]pyrene in mice and HT22 cells: Possible role of miRNA-mRNA network.

Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is neurotoxic, however, the mechanism and potential prevention are yet not clear. This study explored the miRNA-mRNA network in the B[a]P-induced neurotoxicity in mice and HT22 cells and the intervention of aspirin (ASP). HT22 cells were treated for 48 h with DMSO, B[a]P (20 μM), or both B[a]P (20 μM) and ASP (4 μM).

Minimal improvement in coronary artery disease risk prediction in Chinese population using polygenic risk scores: evidence from the China Kadoorie Biobank.

Background: Several studies have reported that polygenic risk scores (PRSs) can enhance risk prediction of coronary artery disease (CAD) in European populations. However, research on this topic is far from sufficient in non-European countries, including China. We aimed to evaluate the potential of PRS for predicting CAD for primary prevention in the Chinese population.

Effectiveness of Pentavalent Rotavirus Vaccine in Shanghai, China: A Test-Negative Design Study.

Objective: To evaluate vaccine effectiveness (VE) of a live oral pentavalent rotavirus vaccine (RotaTeq, RV5) among young children in Shanghai, China, via a test-negative design study.

Study Design: We consecutively recruited children visiting a tertiary children's hospital for acute diarrhea from November 2021 to February 2022. Information on clinical data and rotavirus vaccination was collected.

Background: From March to June 2022, an Omicron BA.2 epidemic occurred in Shanghai. We aimed to better understand the transmission dynamics and identify age-specific transmission characteristics for the epidemic.

Effectiveness of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines among older adults in Shanghai: retrospective cohort study.

We conducted a matched retrospective cohort study of two cohorts to estimate inactivated vaccine effectiveness (VE) and its comparative effectiveness of booster dose among older people in Shanghai. Cohort 1 consisted of a vaccinated group (≥1 dose) and an unvaccinated group (3,317,475 pairs), and cohort 2 consisted of a booster vaccinated group and a fully vaccinated group (2,084,721 pairs). The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression models were used to estimate risk and hazard ratios (HRs) study outcomes.

Multiple rib and vertebral fractures associated with Bordetella pertussis infection: a case report.

Background: Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis, characterized by paroxysms of severe coughing, and predominantly affects children. We report the first case of multiple fractures in the ribs, lumbar spine, and sacrum associated with severe coughing caused by Bordetella pertussis infection in an adult.

Background: Intestinal dysbiosis has been increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Acupuncture has been shown to have beneficial effects on NAFLD, but the mechanism is not yet clear. This study explores the potential beneficial effects of acupuncture on intestinal microbiota in NAFLD.

Whole Genome Sequencing of Brucella melitensis Isolated from Patients in Hohhot, China.

Brucellosis is a class B infectious disease that is spreading rapidly in Inner Mongolia, China. Investigating the genetics of this disease might provide insights into the mechanism by which the bacteria adapt to their hosts. Here, we report the genome sequence of Brucella melitensis strain BM6144, which was isolated from a human patient.

Factors influencing the spatial distribution and individual variation in urinary fluoride levels in Tibet, China.

Nowadays, fluorosis is the most prevalent endemic disease in Tibet and one of the most concerned public health problems in China; urinary fluoride is a common diagnostic indicator of endemic fluorosis. However, the spatial distribution and influencing factors of urinary fluoride content in Tibet remain unclear. This study aims to bridge this gap by geographically weighted regression (GWR), analyses of variance (ANOVAs), Geodetector, and stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR).

Background: Community-based psychological counselling services (CPCS) is crucial for the oldest-old who often faces challenges or are reluctant to seek care at the healthcare settings. This study aims to examine trends in availability of CPCS over time and rural-urban disparities in service availability among nationwide oldest-old in China.

Thus far, controversial results have been reported for the relationship between hyperprolactinaemia and breast lesions. Moreover, the prevalence of hyperprolactinaemia in a population with breast lesions is scarcely reported.

A seroepidemiological survey of adenovirus type 7 circulation among healthy adults in China and in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Adenovirus type 7 (HAdV7) is one of the most pathogenic human adenoviruses (HAdVs) and can cause severe illness and even death, particularly in people with weakened immune systems. Many countries worldwide have experienced epidemics of this highly contagious pathogen, including China and Sierra Leone; however, studies describing the seroprevalence of anti-HAdV7 neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) are still lacking. Herein, we established an efficient neutralization assay based on a recombinant luciferase-expressing HAdV7 virus (HAd7-Luc) to monitor historical HAdV7 infections and predict outbreak distributions.

Children and adolescents' positive youth development qualities and internet addiction during the COVID-19 pandemic: A longitudinal study in China.

Backgrounds: Recent studies have shown that the qualities of children and adolescents' positive youth development (PYD) enable them to cope with developmental challenges in an adaptive manner and maintain healthy functioning. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is still a lack of reporting on changes in children and adolescents' PYD qualities and Internet addiction and their relationship. This study investigated the association between PYD qualities and Internet addiction among the children and adolescents who have experienced the COVID-19 lockdown.

Oral vs. parenteral antibiotic therapy in adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Objectives: Antibiotic therapy is widely used for patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and yet whether the efficacy of antibiotics differs based on the treatment mode remains unclear. This study aimed to summarize the evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of oral vs. parenteral administration of antibiotic therapy for the treatment of patients with CAP.

Rural-urban disparities in the unmet need for home visiting services among oldest-old in China: Changes over time and decomposition analysis.

Purpose: This study aims to assess trends in rural-urban disparities in the prevalence of unmet community-based home visiting services need and their contributing factors from 2005 to 2018 among oldest-old in China.

Methods: The Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey data of oldest-old collected with a targeted random-sampling approach from half of counties/cities from 23 provinces across China was used. Unmet need was measured as the differences between healthcare services expected and available.

Urinary antibiotic exposure and low grip strength risk in community-dwelling elderly Chinese by gender and age.

Emerging studies have shown that environmental contaminants were related to decreased handgrip strength. Nevertheless, no prior research has investigated the relationship of exposure to environmental antibiotics with grip strength. Thus, we explored the relationship between urinary antibiotic burden and grip strength among the elderly in China.

Objective: Gamma-glutamyl dipeptides are bioactive peptides involved in inflammation, oxidative stress, and glucose regulation. Gamma-glutamyl-leucine (Gamma-Glu-Leu) has been extensively reported to be associated with the risk of cardio-metabolic diseases, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. However, the causality remains to be uncovered.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are complex polygenic disorders with brain morphology abnormalities. The etiologies and relationship of both disorders remain elusive, and should be further investigated. Thus, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were generated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from an OCD patient, his mother with SCZ and his healthy father with reprograming method.

Tobacco smoking and risks of more than 470 diseases in China: a prospective cohort study.

Background: Tobacco smoking is estimated to account for more than 1 million annual deaths in China, and the epidemic continues to increase in men. Large nationwide prospective studies linked to different health records can help to periodically assess disease burden attributed to smoking. We aimed to examine associations of smoking with incidence of and mortality from an extensive range of diseases in China.

From the First to Third Generation of Neonicotinoids: Implication for Saving the Loss of Fruit Quality and Flavor by Pesticide Applications.

Neonicotinoids can control crop pests with high efficiency and low cost and have quickly swept one-fourth of the global insecticide market since the launch of imidacloprid in 1991. Imidacloprid and acetamiprid, the first generation of neonicotinoids, and dinotefuran, the representative of third generation of neonicotinoids, were applied on tomato plants individually to investigate neonicotinoid effects on tomato fruit quality, especially on appearance parameters, sugar, acid, and aroma compounds. Compared with the control, fewer differences in the transcriptome profile, sugar, acid, and volatile organic compound (VOC) contents, and sensory analysis results were shown in dinotefuran treatments than in the other two treatments.
