Optimistically biased perception of one's own skin cancer risk: Representative nationwide findings.

J Dtsch Dermatol Ges

August 2019

Mannheim Institute of Public Health, Social and Preventive Medicine (MIPH), Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Mannheim, Germany.

Background: Previous research has shown that individuals tend to have unrealistic comparative optimism (UCO) for different diseases and health outcomes. Our aim was to analyze UCO in relation to skin cancer for the first time in a representative nationwide sample. The results will be important for planning future prevention.

Background: Secukinumab has shown sustained efficacy and safety in several manifestations of psoriasis.

Objectives: GESTURE investigated the long-term (2·5-year) safety and efficacy of 150 mg and 300 mg subcutaneous secukinumab in 205 patients with moderate-to-severe palmoplantar psoriasis.

Methods: GESTURE was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, phase IIIb trial conducted across 15 countries.

Background: People who inject drugs (PWID) in Kazakhstan face many barriers to HIV testing as well as to accessing HIV care, to retention in HIV care, and to initiating and adhering to anti-retroviral treatment (ART). Needle and syringe programs (NSPs) are an opportune setting for integrated interventions to link PWID to HIV care.

Methods: This Hybrid Type II study employs a stepped-wedge design to evaluate both effectiveness and implementation outcomes of Bridge, an intervention to identify, test, and link HIV-positive PWID to HIV care.

A 56-year-old man presented with multiple, skin-colored, raised eruptions of the scrotum that had been present for 2 years. Their onset had been gradual, and they had been increasing in size, resulting in cosmetic disfigurement. A year previously, he had been operated on for a bilateral vaginal hydrocele with partial excision and eversion of the sac (Jabouley method).

Article Synopsis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is linked to higher cardiovascular risk, and this study explored genetic links between SNPs associated with atherosclerosis and subclinical atherosclerosis (SA) in RA patients.
  • A total of 289 Polish RA patients were examined, with findings indicating that none of the 29 SNPs significantly correlated with SA, but a genetic risk score (GRS) was associated with SA in patients with early-stage RA.
  • The results suggest that early RA patients may share genetic risk factors for SA like the general population, while those with long-standing RA might experience diminished influence from these genetic factors, potentially influenced by treatment with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs).

Profile of sunless tanning product users: Results from a nationwide representative survey.

Photodermatol Photoimmunol Photomed

January 2019

Mannheim Institute of Public Health, Social and Preventive Medicine, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Mannheim, Germany.

Background: Sunless tanning products (STPs) are often seen as "healthy alternative" to sunbathing and indoor tanning. However, STP use may entail indirect risks such as overestimating an individual's natural skin type, resulting in risky (natural and artificial) tanning behavior. We aimed to explore STP use in combination with other health-related risk behaviors (eg, smoking), skin cancer risk, risk awareness of ultraviolet radiation, and preventive behavior.

Are tanning salons in compliance with German law? An evaluation based on a nationwide representative survey.

Photodermatol Photoimmunol Photomed

March 2018

Mannheim Institute of Public Health, Social and Preventive Medicine, Heidelberg University, Mannheim, Germany.

Background: Given the evidence for increased skin cancer risk due to the sunbed use, a regulation of hazardous artificial ultraviolet radiation (UVR regulation) was passed in Germany in 2012. The aim of this study was to explore the advisory services in tanning studios as reported by sunbed users and to evaluate the information provided by the personnel of tanning salons after the UVR regulation was enacted.

Methods: The first wave of the representative National Cancer Aid Monitoring on Sunbed Use included a subgroup of 357 German citizens between 14 and 45 years who had used sunbeds since the UVR regulation was implemented.

Background: Skin care products (cleansers and moisturizers) to complement benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in the treatment of acne may improve treatment tolerability and adherence.

Objective: Evaluate subject satisfaction after use of BPO 5% gel in combination with liquid cleanser and moisturizer SPF 30.

Methods: Open-label study including subjects aged ≥12 years with mild-to-moderate facial acne; ClinicalTrials.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers genotyped 38 SNPs in 480 psoriasis patients and 490 controls, confirming associations with several genetic loci and calculating a genetic risk score (GRS) to measure cumulative risk.
  • * A GRS combining 16 SNPs showed greater predictive accuracy for psoriasis compared to other models, indicating a strong correlation with the disease's occurrence, particularly concerning its age of onset and family history.

Background: The incidence rate of melanoma in the Caucasian population is rising worldwide. One of the major environmental risk factors for melanoma is the exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. To prevent skin damage caused by UV exposure, several organizations recommend wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade, avoiding the outdoors during midday and using sunscreen.

We studied ROS generation by human peripheral blood monocytes and granulocytes during phagocytosis of Escherichia coli soxS::lux or katG::lux responding by luminescence (bioluminescence) to the development of oxidative stress. Initially high sensitivity of the bioluminescent reaction of E. coli katG::lux strain to the effects of model ROS (KO2 and H2O2) and pronounced induction of luminescence upon contact with granulocytes, whereas E.

Syphilis epidemiology in 1994-2013, molecular epidemiological strain typing and determination of macrolide resistance in Treponema pallidum in 2013-2014 in Tuva Republic, Russia.

The incidence of syphilis in the Tuva Republic (geographical centre of Asia), Russia has been exceedingly high historically. No detailed examinations and no molecular investigations of Treponema pallidum strains transmitted in the Tuva Republic, or in general, in Russia, were published internationally. We examined the syphilis epidemiology in 1994-2013, and the molecular epidemiology and macrolide resistance in T.

European Code against Cancer 4th Edition: Ultraviolet radiation and cancer.

Cancer Epidemiol

December 2015

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), 150 Cours Albert Thomas, 69372 Lyon, France. Electronic address:

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is part of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted naturally from the sun or from artificial sources such as tanning devices. Acute skin reactions induced by UVR exposure are erythema (skin reddening), or sunburn, and the acquisition of a suntan triggered by UVR-induced DNA damage. UVR exposure is the main cause of skin cancer, including cutaneous malignant melanoma, basal-cell carcinoma, and squamous-cell carcinoma.

Background: New therapeutic options are needed for patients with psoriasis. Tofacitinib, an oral Janus kinase inhibitor, is being investigated as a treatment for moderate-to-severe chronic plaque psoriasis. In this study, we aimed to compare two tofacitinib doses with high-dose etanercept or placebo in this patient population.

Brazil is a country of continental dimensions with a large heterogeneity of climates and massive mixing of the population. Almost the entire national territory is located between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Earth axial tilt to the south certainly makes Brazil one of the countries of the world with greater extent of land in proximity to the sun. The Brazilian coastline, where most of its population lives, is more than 8,500 km long.
