The failure of chemotherapeutic treatment in colorectal cancer (CRC), the second most mortal cancer worldwide, is associated with several drug limitations, such as non-selective distribution, short half-life, and development of multiple resistances. One of the most promising strategies in CRC therapy is the development of delivery systems based on nanomaterials that can transport antitumor agents to the tumor site more efficiently, increasing accumulation within the tumor and thus the antitumor effect. In addition to taking advantage of the increased permeability and retention effect (EPR) of solid tumors, these nanoformulations can be conjugated with monoclonal antibodies that recognize molecular markers that are specifically over-expressed on CRC cells.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of diet quality with fasting glycemia, insulinemia, and insulin resistance in a cross-sectional sample of adults from families at high risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) from six European countries, taking into account their socioeconomic status (SES).
Methods: Baseline data from non-diabetic adults from the Feel4 Diabetes study were used and diet was assessed by the Healthy Diet Score (HDS). Insulin resistance (IR) was determined by homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR).

Talpid moles and spotted hyenas have become the paradigms of anatomical and behavioral female masculinization. Females of many mole species develop ovotestes that produce testosterone, show external genitalia that resemble that of males, and close their vaginal orifice after every estrus, and female spotted hyenas lack an external vaginal orifice and develop a pseudoscrotum and a large pseudopenis through which they urinate, mate, and give birth. We review current knowledge about several significant aspects of the biology and evolution of these females, including () their specific study methods; () their unique anatomical features, and how these peculiarities influence certain physiological functions; and () the role that steroid hormones as well as genetic and environmental factors may have in urogenital system development, aggressive behavior, and social dominance.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the tumors with the lowest survival rates due to the poor efficacy of the treatments currently used. Gemcitabine (GMZ), one of the chemotherapeutic agents employed when the tumor is unresectable, frequently fails due to the development of drug resistance. Continuous improvements in morphological and histochemical analyses of could improve our understanding of the anatomy and physiology of these insects at both the cellular and tissue level. In this work, two different approaches have been performed to add new data on the abdomen of worker bees: (i) Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT), which allows the identification of small-scale structures (micrometers) with adequate/optimal resolution and avoids sample damage and, (ii) histochemical multi-staining with Periodic Acid-Schiff-Alcian blue, Lactophenol-Saphranin O and pentachrome staining to precisely characterize the histological structures of the midgut and hindgut. Micro-CT allowed high-resolution imaging of anatomical structures of the honeybee abdomen with particular emphasis on the proventriculus and pyloric valves, as well as the connection of the sting apparatus with the terminal abdominal ganglia.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) continues to pose a major clinical challenge. There has been little improvement in patient survival over the past few decades, and it is projected to become the second leading cause of cancer mortality by 2030. A (core/shell)/shell nanostructure (production performance ≈ 50%, mean diameter ≈ 330 nm) was built using maghemite, PLGA, and chitosan. An extensive characterization proved the complete inclusion of the maghemite nuclei into the PLGA matrix (by nanoprecipitation solvent evaporation) and the disposition of the chitosan shell onto the nanocomposite (by coacervation). Short-term stability and the adequate magnetism of the nanocomposites were demonstrated by size and electrokinetic determinations, and by defining the first magnetization curve and the responsiveness of the colloid to a permanent magnet, respectively.

Human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs) may be used in some nervous system pathologies, although obtaining an adequate degree of neuronal differentiation is an important barrier to their applicability. This requires a deep understanding of the expression and epigenetic changes of the most important genes involved in their differentiation. We used hASCs from human lipoaspirates to induce neuronal-like cells through three protocols (Neu1, 2, and 3), determined the degree of neuronal differentiation using specific biomarkers in culture cells and neurospheres, and analyzed epigenetic changes of genes involved in this differentiation.
