State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves, School of Information Science and Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, China.

With the rapid expansion of wireless networks, the deployment and long-term maintenance of distributed microwave terminals have become increasingly challenging. To address these issues, we present a bio-inspired microwave system to constitute passive and maintenance-free wireless networks. Drawing inspiration from vertebrate skeletons and skins, we employ stimuli-responsive polymer with tunable stiffness to support and protect sensitive electromagnetic structures, and synthesize self-healable skin-like polymer for system encapsulation.

Lymphedema is localized swelling due to lymphatic system dysfunction, often affecting arms and legs due to fluid accumulation. It occurs in 20% to 94% of patients within 2 to 5 years after breast cancer treatment, with around 20% of women developing breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). This condition involves the accumulation of protein-rich fluid in interstitial spaces, leading to symptoms like swelling, pain, and reduced mobility that significantly impact quality of life.

The paper presents a double-radio wireless multimedia sensor node (WMSN) with a camera on board, designed for plant proximal monitoring. Camera sensor nodes represent an effective solution to monitor the crop at the leaf or fruit scale, with details that cannot be retrieved with the same precision through satellites or unnamed aerial vehicles (UAVs). From the technological point of view, WMSNs are characterized by very different requirements, compared to standard wireless sensor nodes; in particular, the network data rate results in higher energy consumption and incompatibility with the usage of battery-powered devices.

Rapid growth in bio-logging-the use of animal-borne electronic tags to document the movements, behaviour, physiology and environments of wildlife-offers opportunities to mitigate biodiversity threats and expand digital natural history archives. Here we present a vision to achieve such benefits by accounting for the heterogeneity inherent to bio-logging data and the concerns of those who collect and use them. First, we can enable data integration through standard vocabularies, transfer protocols and aggregation protocols, and drive their wide adoption.

Space division multiplexing (SDM) with Hermite Gaussian (HG) modes, for instance, can significantly boost the transmission link capacity. However, SDM is not suitable in existing single mode fiber networks, and in long-distance wireless, microwave, THz or optical links, the far-field beam distribution may present a problem. Recently it has been demonstrated, that time domain HG modes can be employed to enhance the link capacity.

Vital signs such as heart rate (HR) and respiration rate (RR) are essential physiological parameters that are routinely used to monitor human health and bodily functions. They can be continuously monitored through contact or contactless measurements performed in the home or a hospital. In this study, a contactless Doppler radar W-band sensing system was used for short-range, contactless vital sign estimation.

State Key Laboratory of Optical Communication Technologies and Networks, China Information Communication Technologies Group Corporation (CICT), Wuhan, China.

Beam-steered infrared (IR) light communication has gained tremendous attention as one of the solutions of congested wireless communication traffic. High performance active beam-steering devices play a crucial role in data allocation and exchange. Conventional beam-steering devices such as spatial light modulator (SLM) and micro-electrical mechanical system (MEMS) mirror and the current emerging nonmechanical beam-steering metasurface-based devices are challenging to realize a large tunable steering angle beyond several degrees, which significantly hinders the spatial application of optical wireless communications (OWC).

The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is essential for the body's immediate response to stress, initiating physiological changes that can be measured through sympathetic nerve activity (SNA). While microneurography (MNG) is the gold standard for direct SNA measurement, its invasive nature limits its practical use in clinical settings. This study investigates the use of multi-wavelength photoplethysmography (PPG) as a non-invasive alternative for SNA measurement.

Plasmonic nanoantennas with suitable far-field characteristics are of huge interest for utilization in optical wireless links, inter-/intrachip communications, LiDARs, and photonic integrated circuits due to their exceptional modal confinement. Despite its success in shaping robust antenna design theories in radio frequency and millimeter-wave regimes, conventional transmission line theory finds its validity diminished in the optical frequencies, leading to a noticeable void in a generalized theory for antenna design in the optical domain. By utilizing neural networks, and through a one-time training of the network, one can transform the plasmonic nanoantennas design into an automated, data-driven task.

Tracking control for two-wheeled mobile robots via event-triggered mechanism.

ISA Trans

January 2025

Research and Innovation Center, Obuda University, Budapest 1034, Hungary. Electronic address:

In this paper, we investigate the event-based tracking control for two-wheeled mobile robots using a sliding mode control strategy. To address the conflict between the singularity problem and finite-time performance, a new nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller enabling mobile robots to achieve the tracking goal through a wireless network is developed. Further, redesign the controller using sampling information, in which an event condition is introduced to determine the sampling sequence, and the event-triggered controller avoids the high gain situation through the proposed sliding variables.

In these critical situations, first responders must coordinate with other rescue teams to communicate essential information to central command and survivors. To address this challenge, we have developed a reliable and rapidly deployable wireless ad hoc system for post-disaster management using Data Distribution Service (DDS) middleware, specifically RTI-DDS, named R-RDSP.
