In the current landscape of endothelial cell isolation for building in vitro models of the blood-brain barrier, our work moves towards reproducing the features of the neurovascular unit to achieve glial compliance through an innovative biomimetic coating technology for brain chronic implants. We hypothesized that the autologous origin of human brain microvascular endothelial cells (hBMECs) is the first requirement for the suitable coating to prevent the glial inflammatory response triggered by foreign neuroprosthetics. Therefore, this study established a new procedure to preserve the in vitro viability of hBMECs isolated from gray and white matter specimens taken from neurosurgery patients.

Research on intimate partner violence (IPV) has recognized psychological abuse as a precursor of physical and sexual violence in intimate relationships. However, risk factors in predicting women's psychological abuse victimization in such a context are still unclear. Bistability in the firing rate is a prominent feature in different types of neurons as well as in neural networks. We show that for a constant input below a critical value, such bistability can lead to a giant spike-count diffusion. We study the transmission of a periodic signal and demonstrate that close to the critical bias current, the signal-to-noise ratio suffers a sharp increase, an effect that can be traced back to the giant diffusion and large Fano factor.

Next-generation neural interfaces for bidirectional communication with the central nervous system aim to achieve the intimate integration with the neural tissue with minimal neuroinflammatory response, high spatio-temporal resolution, very high sensitivity, and readout stability. The design and manufacturing of devices for low power/low noise neural recording and safe and energy-efficient stimulation that are, at the same time, conformable to the brain, with matched mechanical properties and biocompatibility, is a convergence area of research where neuroscientists, materials scientists, and nanotechnologists operate synergically. We present analytic results for mean capture time and energy expended by a pack of deterministic hounds actively chasing a randomly diffusing prey. Depending on the number of chasers, the mean capture time as a function of the prey's diffusion coefficient can be monotonically increasing, decreasing, or attain a minimum at a finite value. Optimal speed and number of chasing hounds exist and depend on each chaser's baseline power consumption.

In this article we explore an epistemic approach we name dis/embodiment and introduce "Articulations," an interdisciplinary project bringing together Virtual Reality (VR) designers, cognitive scientists, dancers, anthropologists, and human-machine interaction specialists. According to Erin Manning, our sense of self and other emerges from processes of bodying and relational movement (becoming oneself by moving in relation with the world). The aim of the project is to exploit the potential of multi-person VR in order to explore the intersubjective dynamics of relational movement and bodying, and to do so with scientific, artistic and therapeutic purposes in mind.

Mirror neurons constitute an observation and execution matching system likely involved in others' actions processing and in a large set of complex cognitive functions. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a telerehabilitation program during the COVID-19 pandemic in a sample of adult patients with physical disabilities. Of the twenty-three patients enrolled, 11 agreed to participate in a video-based telerehabilitation program. Barriers and facilitators to the adoption of telerehabilitation were identified and clinical, demographic, and psychological variables were analysed as predictors of success.

Recent technological advances show the feasibility of offline decoding speech from neuronal signals, paving the way to the development of chronically implanted speech brain computer interfaces (sBCI). Two key steps that still need to be addressed for the online deployment of sBCI are, on the one hand, the definition of relevant design parameters of the recording arrays, on the other hand, the identification of robust physiological markers of the patient's intention to speak, which can be used to online trigger the decoding process.
