Humeral and Glenoid Component Malposition in Revision Shoulder Arthroplasty: A Retrospective, Cross-sectional Study.

J Shoulder Elbow Surg

January 2025

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo, SUNY, Buffalo, NY, USA.

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of glenoid and humeral component malposition in failed primary shoulder arthroplasty requiring revision. We hypothesized that glenoid and humeral component malposition would be a prevalent feature in cases requiring revision arthroplasty for primary anatomic TSA, primary RSA, and primary hemiarthroplasty procedures.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed focusing on identifying the incidence of malpositioned components in shoulder arthroplasty in quantitative and qualitative reviews.

Reduction of ischemic time using the pull-through technique for scapular free flap.

Oral Maxillofac Surg

January 2025

Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Institute of Science Tokyo, 1-5-45, Yushima, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, 113-8510, Japan.

Purpose: Current scapular free flap (SFF) harvest in mandibular reconstruction often requires repositioning, hindering simultaneous harvest and resection and potentially increasing ischemic time. This study evaluated the efficacy of the pull-through technique (PTT) for SFF harvest, aiming to reduce ischemic time during mandibular segmental resection.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 24 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction using SFF at two maxillofacial surgery departments between January 2015 and May 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • There is currently no gold standard for the best graft choice in treating chronic elbow instability, prompting research into the suitability of fascia lata allografts compared to triceps autografts.
  • The study involved biomechanical testing of fascia lata allografts and a cohort analysis of clinical outcomes, focusing on pain, motion range, and stability post-reconstruction.
  • Results showed that both graft types had similar pain levels and functional outcomes, with no significant differences in stability metrics between the fascia lata and triceps groups.

Acute patellar dislocation: how skeletal maturity affects patterns of injury.

Skeletal Radiol

March 2024

Department of Radiology, Division of Pediatric Radiology, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, 630 West 168th Street, MC-28, New York, NY, 10032, USA.

Objective: The main objective of this study was to understand the role of skeletal maturity in the different patterns of osteochondral and ligamentous injuries after an acute lateral patellar dislocation.

Materials And Methods: Two radiologists independently reviewed MRIs of 212 knees performed after an acute lateral patellar dislocation to evaluate the presence of high-grade patellar osteochondral injury, femoral osteochondral injury, and medial patellofemoral ligament injury. The association of skeletal maturity (indicated by a closed distal femoral physis), age, sex, and first-time versus recurrent dislocation with each of these various lesions was analyzed using Chi-square or T test, and multivariable logistic regression with estimation of odds ratios (OR).

Returning to golf after rotator cuff repair.

JSES Int

May 2023

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Glocal Center for Shoulder & Elbow, Konkuk University Hospital, Konkuk University School of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Background: The prevalence of rotator cuff repair is increasing; however, no study has assessed patients who have returned to golf activity after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

Methods: The subjects of the survey were 633 patients who were at least two years postoperative after rotator cuff repair from January 2005 to December 2017. From August 2019 to October 2019, survey responses were collected via an online questionnaire or phone calls and a total of 197 patients were reviewed retrospectively to study about returning to golf after rotator cuff repair.

Department of Radiology, Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology, New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia University Medical Center, 622 West 168th Street, MC-28, New York, NY 10032. Electronic address:

The purpose is to evaluate the trends in MR arthrogram utilization at a tertiary care academic institution and to determine if there are factors that can be implicated in the utilization trends. Number of MR arthrograms of the shoulder, hip, and elbow from 2013-2020 at our institution were identified (n = 1882). Patient demographics including age, sex, sports participation, history of prior surgery, and physician referral were obtained.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

July 2023

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, School of Medicine, Center for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Konkuk University School of Medicine, 120-1 Neungdong-Ro (Hwayang-Dong), Gwangjin-Gu, Seoul, 143-729, Korea.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of arthroscopic superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) using hybrid grafts composed of tensor fascia lata autografts and human dermal allografts.

Methods: This study included 30 patients with chronic irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears (RCTs) who underwent arthroscopic SCR using a hybrid graft composed of tensor fascia lata autograft and human dermal allograft. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the pain visual analogue scale score, shoulder range of motion, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, constant score, University of California-Los Angeles score, and simple shoulder test score preoperatively and at least 2 years after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Ice hockey is a fast-paced sport with a high injury risk due to factors like speed, collisions, and sharp skates.
  • Chronic injuries, such as the "Bauer bump," often emerge alongside acute injuries, highlighting the importance of understanding both types.
  • Haglund syndrome is a common chronic condition in hockey players, characterized by a bony enlargement on the heel, and requires proper diagnosis and management by clinicians.

Ice hockey has long been defined by a level of violence not seen in other sports. The rough-and-tough vigilante nature of the game was often employed as a method of enticing fans. Play in the National Hockey League (NHL) evolved throughout the 20 century as the rules governing it did.

Background: Fighting is often considered an essential part of professional hockey. Increased ticket sales, a means to self-regulate other dangerous gameplay, and helping teams win are a few of the reasons that fighting advocates provide for retaining fighting in the NHL. However, fighting trends have changed over the past 50 years.

Background: We hypothesized in this study that the characteristics of retear cases vary according to surgeon volume and that surgical outcomes differ between primary and revision arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (revisional ARCR).

Methods: Surgeons performing more than 12 rotator cuff repairs (RCRs) per year were defined as high-volume surgeons, and those performing fewer than 12 RCRs were considered low-volume surgeons. Of the 47 patients who underwent revisional ARCR at our clinic enrolled in this study, 21 cases were treated by high-volume surgeons and 26 cases by low-volume surgeons.

Article Synopsis
  • A labral retear can lead to unsuccessful shoulder surgery after an initial Bankart repair, particularly due to poor tissue conditions like capsular tears found during revision surgery.
  • This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and failure rates of revision surgeries based on whether patients had a healed labrum with capsular tears or labral retears without capsular issues.
  • Results indicated that out of 55 patients, those with capsular tears (group 1) had a significantly higher surgical failure rate (40%) compared to those with labral retears (group 2, 16.4%).
