Background Arterial stiffness is a consequence of aging, but there are several diseases that contribute to this process. The evaluation of pulse wave velocity (PWV) allows a dynamic evaluation of vascular distensibility and the detection of atherosclerosis at an early stage. It was intended to evaluate the PWV in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and to compare their outcome according to the type of treatment used.

For the correct staging of chronic atrophic gastritis (AG) and gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) at least 4 biopsies are recommended: 2 from the antrum/incisura and 2 from the body sent in two different vials. As virtual chromoendoscopy with narrow-band-imaging (NBI) is valid both in the diagnosis and staging of GIM, it is reasonable to question the need to separate biopsy samples in all procedures. : To evaluate if biopsy samples can be placed in the same vial without implications in the diagnosis and follow-up of the patient, if during gastroscopy no typical endoscopic pattern of GIM with NBI is observed.

Background: Mobile health can be used to generate innovative insights into optimizing treatment to improve allergic rhinitis (AR) control.
Objectives: A cross-sectional real-world observational study was undertaken in 22 countries to complement a pilot study and provide novel information on medication use, disease control, and work productivity in the everyday life of patients with AR.
Methods: A mobile phone app (Allergy Diary, which is freely available on Google Play and Apple stores) was used to collect the data of daily visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for (1) overall allergic symptoms; (2) nasal, ocular, and asthma symptoms; (3) work; and (4) medication use by using a treatment scroll list including all allergy medications (prescribed and over-the-counter) customized for 22 countries.

A common surgical treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). Unfortunately, traditional UPPP can cause a foreign body sensation, chronic discomfort and in rare cases, nasopharyngeal stenosis or velopharyngeal insufficiency. Modifications to traditional UPPP have been developed over the years to help decrease side effects, while trying to maintain or improve OSA outcomes.

Patients with chronic atrophic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia (IM) are at risk for gastric adenocarcinoma. This underscores the importance of diagnosis and risk stratification for these patients. High definition endoscopy with chromoendoscopy (CE) is better than high definition white-light endoscopy alone for this purpose.

One of teachers' concerns, with students in general and medical students in particular, is to ensure as much as possible that information goes from students' short-term memories to their long-term memories. The present study focuses on knowledge retention in Medical Microbiology and assesses the effectiveness of some strategies implemented for short- and long-term retention. A pre- and post-test was used to assess student's learning.

Purpose: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a major public health issue worldwide and fructose consumption has been associated with MS development. Recently, we showed that the dietary polyphenol chrysin is an effective inhibitor of fructose uptake by human intestinal epithelial cells. Therefore, our aim was to investigate if chrysin interferes with the development of MS induced by fructose in an animal model.

Background: Random biopsies are recommended to identify individuals at risk of gastric adenocarcinoma. Cumulative evidence suggests that narrow-band imaging (NBI) can be used to grade gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM). We aimed to externally validate a classification of endoscopic grading of gastric intestinal metaplasia (EGGIM).

Pharmacists are trusted health care professionals. Many patients use over-the-counter (OTC) medications and are seen by pharmacists who are the initial point of contact for allergic rhinitis management in most countries. The role of pharmacists in integrated care pathways (ICPs) for allergic diseases is important.

Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline by using the best approach to integrated care pathways using mobile technology in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. The proposed next phase of ARIA is change management, with the aim of providing an active and healthy life to patients with rhinitis and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the lifecycle irrespective of their sex or socioeconomic status to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease. ARIA has followed the 8-step model of Kotter to assess and implement the effect of rhinitis on asthma multimorbidity and to propose multimorbid guidelines.

Our aim was to investigate the effect of some xenobiotics on placentation-related processes in an extravillous trophoblastic cell line (HTR-8/SVneo cells). Amphetamine, MDMA, theophylline, and fluoxetine, but not nicotine, cocaine, and caffeine, had a negative effect on cell proliferation rates, culture growth, viability, or migratory capacity. These compounds have a detrimental effect in placentation-related processes of HTR-8/SVneo cells.

In the last years, metabolic reprogramming became a new key hallmark of tumor cells. One of its components is a deviant energetic metabolism, known as Warburg effect-an characterized by elevated rates of glucose uptake and consumption with high-lactate production even in the presence of oxygen. Because many cancer cells display a greater sensitivity to glucose deprivation-induced cytotoxicity than normal cells, inhibitors of glucose cellular uptake (facilitative glucose transporter 1 inhibitors) and oxidative metabolism (glycolysis inhibitors) are potential therapeutic targets in cancer treatment.

Phthalates are a group of chemical compounds used as plasticizers in the manufacture of plastic materials. They can be present in many commonly used products. There seems to be a relationship between exposure to phthalates and the occurrence of metabolic dysfunctions, such as a decrease in glucose tolerance, oxidative stress, loss of beta cells, and a decrease in insulin synthesis.

Background: The traditional concept of personalized nutrition is based on adapting diets according to individual needs and preferences. Discussions about personalized nutrition have been on since the Human Genome Project, which has sequenced the human genome. Thenceforth, topics such as nutrigenomics have been assessed to help in better understanding the genetic variation influence on the dietary response and association between nutrients and gene expression.

Introduction: Due to their importance in transmitting knowledge, teachers can play a crucial role in students' scientific literacy acquisition and motivation to respond to ongoing and future economic and societal challenges. However, to conduct this task effectively, teachers need to continuously improve their knowledge, and for that, a periodic update is mandatory for actualization of scientific knowledge and skills. This work is based on the outcomes of an educational study implemented with science teachers from Portuguese Basic and Secondary schools.
