In this article, we propose that differences in COVID-19 morbidity may be associated with transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) and/or transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) activation as well as desensitization. TRPA1 and TRPV1 induce inflammation and play a key role in the physiology of almost all organs. They may augment sensory or vagal nerve discharges to evoke pain and several symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, nasal obstruction, vomiting, diarrhea, and, at least partly, sudden and severe loss of smell and taste.

There are large country variations in COVID-19 death rates that may be partly explained by diet. Many countries with low COVID-19 death rates have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented vegetables such as cabbage and, in some continents, various spices. Fermented vegetables and spices are agonists of the antioxidant transcription factor nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2), and spices are transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 and vanillin 1 (TRPA1/V1) agonists.

September 2020

REQUIMTE/LAQV-GRAQ, Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, Politécnico do Porto, Rua Dr. António Bernardino de Almeida, 431, 4200-072, Porto, Portugal.

Shrimps are widely distributed in coastal areas, estuaries and rivers. Although this shellfish is a good source of nutrients, it can also accumulate environmental contaminants, such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), synthetic musks (SMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Due to their bioaccumulative properties, these pollutants are endocrine disruptors.

Method development for the determination of Synthetic Musks and Organophosphorus Pesticides in Human Adipose Tissue.

J Pharm Biomed Anal

November 2020

REQUIMTE/LAQV-GRAQ, Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, Instituto Politécnico do Porto, 4200-072 Porto, Portugal. Electronic address:

Synthetic musks and organophosphorus pesticides represent a potential risk to the human health since exposure can lead to distinct types of carcinogenesis and endocrine disorders. These are lipophilic compounds as such, prone to deposit and persist in fat tissues, mainly in adipose tissue. Very few studies have reported on the occurrence and accumulation profile of these contaminants in human adipose tissue.

Obesity blunts cephalic-phase microvascular responses to food.

Physiol Behav

October 2020

Clinical and Experimental Research Laboratory on Vascular Biology (BioVasc) Biomedical Center, State University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil; Department of Internal Medicine Faculty of Medical Sciences, State University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil.

Neurally mediated anticipatory responses, also named cephalic-phase responses, and microcirculatory regulation are two important mechanisms to maintain metabolic homeostasis. Altered cephalic-phase responses in obesity and its metabolic consequences have been proposed. There is, however, a lack of studies focusing on in vivo assessment of the microcirculation during this phase in patients with obesity.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a potentially lethal infection that affects mostly immunocompromised patients caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. Echinocandins are a second-line therapy against IA, used as a salvage therapy as well as for empirical or prophylactic therapy. Although they cause lysis of growing hyphal tips, they are considered fungistatic against molds.
