Faculty of Public Health and Administration, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, San Martín de Porres 15102, Peru.

Carers were disproportionately harmed in the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite facing an increased risk of contracting the virus, they continued in frontline roles in care services and acted as "shock absorbers" for their families and communities. In this article, we apply an intersectional lens to examine care work and the structural factors disadvantaging carers during COVID-19 through a comparative case study analysis of 16 low-, middle-, and high-income countries.

The pearl jubilee of microcin J25: thirty years of research on an exceptional lasso peptide.

Nat Prod Rep

March 2024

Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI), Saarland University Campus, 66123 Saarbrücken, Germany.

Covering: 1992 up to 2023Since their discovery, lasso peptides went from peculiarities to be recognized as a major family of ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptide (RiPP) natural products that were shown to be spread throughout the bacterial kingdom. Microcin J25 was first described in 1992, making it one of the earliest known lasso peptides. No other lasso peptide has since then been studied to such an extent as microcin J25, yet, previous review articles merely skimmed over all the research done on this exceptional lasso peptide.

Research Question: What are current practices of post-treatment fertility preservation in male childhood cancer survivors (CCS) who have not benefitted from pre-therapeutic fertility preservation in France and other European countries?

Design: A survey was conducted of all fertility preservation centres in France (n = 30) and European fertility specialists (n = 9) in five European countries. Eight clinical cases and 40 questions were included to assess the effect of age at diagnosis, type of treatment (alkylating-agents, orchidectomy, testicular radiotherapy) and sperm parameters on the probability of a post-treatment fertility preservation proposal. Demographic characteristics of the responding practitioner were also collected.

Previous research on commercial determinants of health has primarily focused on their impact on non-communicable diseases. However, they also impact on infectious diseases and on the broader preconditions for health. We describe, through case studies in 16 countries, how commercial determinants of health were visible during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how they may have influenced national responses and health outcomes.

Introduction: Tobacco consumption is associated with nearly 30 000 deaths annually in Nigeria alongside other adverse health and economic effects. Our objective was to estimate the health and economic implications of the current cigarette labeling policies (text-only HWs); new health warnings policies in the country (adding graphic health warnings with up to 60% coverage), and plain packaging policy as recommended by the World Health Organization.

Aims And Methods: We used a probabilistic state-transition individual microsimulation model, considering natural history, healthcare costs, and quality-of-life losses associated with main tobacco-attributable diseases; and the potential effects of packaging and labeling policies.

Personalized embryo transfer guided by endometrial receptivity analysis: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

Hum Reprod

July 2023

Argentine Cochrane Centre, Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS), Center for Research in Epidemiology and Public Health, National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Study Question: Does a personalized embryo transfer (pET) guided by tests for endometrial receptivity (TER) increase the effectiveness of ART procedures?

Summary Answer: The use of TER-guided pET is not supported by current published evidence in women without repeated implantation failure (RIF), while in women with RIF more research is needed to assess a potential benefit.

What Is Known Already: Implantation rates are still far from ideal, especially in some patients that have RIF with good-quality embryos. As a potential solution, a wide range of diverse TER use different sets of genes to identify displacements of the window of implantation to adjust the individual length of progesterone exposure in a pET.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine how common malaria and Covid-19 are among febrile patients in Lomé, using various testing methods over two months in 2020.
  • A total of 243 patients were tested, revealing a malaria prevalence of about 25%, while the presence of SARS-CoV-2 was found in approximately 7.4% of the participants.
  • The findings suggest that there may be cross-reactivity between Covid-19 and malaria in rapid tests, indicating the need for PCR testing to accurately diagnose Covid-19 in areas where malaria is common.

A proper NADH/NAD + balance allows for the flow of metabolic and catabolic activities determining cellular growth. In , more than 80 NAD + dependent enzymes are involved in all major metabolic pathways, including the post-transcriptional build-up of thiazole and oxazole rings from small linear peptides, which is a critical step for the antibiotic activity of some microcins. In recent years, NAD metabolism boosting drugs have been explored, mostly precursors of NAD + synthesis in human cells, with beneficial effects on the aging process and in preventing oncological and neurological diseases.

Low calcium intake and its impact on maternal and child health are a major concern in low- and middle-income countries. Given the low calcium in diet, as well as the low adherence and acceptability of calcium pills in those settings, the discussion about policies to increase calcium intake has moved toward staple food fortification strategies. Nevertheless, there is scarce information on the economic feasibility of implementing these strategies.

The epidermis constitutes a continuous external layer covering the body, offering protection against bacteria, the most abundant living organisms that come into contact with this barrier. The epidermis is heavily colonized by commensal bacterial organisms that help protect against pathogenic bacteria. The highly regulated and dynamic interaction between the epidermis and commensals involves the host's production of nutritional factors promoting bacterial growth together to chemical and immunological bacterial inhibitors.
