Plant SUMO conjugation is an essential posttranslational modification involved in plant development and responses to environmental stress. Most likely, this biological diversification is supported by a functional specialization of the different isoforms of the SUMO conjugation machinery. In the framework of the research project called fitomatics, we have isolated and characterized a bacterial plant-endophyte from the rhizomes of , hereafter referred to as strain FIT81. The bacterium is Gram negative, rod-shaped with lophotrichous flagella, and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The optimal growth temperature of strain FIT81 is 28 °C, although it can grow within a temperature range of 4-32 °C.

Background: Sterols are structural and functional components of eukaryotic cell membranes. Plants produce a complex mixture of sterols, among which β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, and cholesterol in some Solanaceae, are the most abundant species. Many reports have shown that the stigmasterol to β-sitosterol ratio changes during plant development and in response to stresses, suggesting that it may play a role in the regulation of these processes.

Chromoplast differentiation involves an active synthesis of carotenoids associated with the remodeling of the preexisting plastid membrane systems to form specialized structures involved in the sequestration and storage of the synthesized carotenoids. These subplastidial structures show remarkable morphological differences and seem to be adapted to the accumulation of particular carotenoids in some plant species and organs. Background: The main goal of the current work was to infer the demographic history of seven Spanish goat breeds (Malagueña, Murciano-Granadina, Florida, Palmera, Mallorquina, Bermeya and Blanca de Rasquera) based on genome-wide diversity data generated with the Illumina Goat SNP50 BeadChip (population size, N = 176). Five additional populations from Europe (Saanen and Carpathian) and Africa (Tunisian, Djallonké and Sahel) were also included in this analysis (N = 80) for comparative purposes.

Results: Our results show that the genetic background of Spanish goats traces back mainly to European breeds although signs of North African admixture were detected in two Andalusian breeds (Malagueña and Murciano-Granadina).

We aimed to analyse the genetic diversity of Romanian wild boars and to compare it with that from other wild boar and pig populations from Europe and Asia. Partial sequencing of the mitochondrial encoded cytochrome b (MT-CYB) gene from 36 Romanian wild boars and 36 domestic pigs (Mangalitza, Bazna and Vietnamese breeds) showed that the diversity of Romanian wild boars and Mangalitza pigs is fairly reduced, and that most of the members of these two populations share a common MT-CYB haplotype. Besides, in strong contrast with the Bazna animals, Romanian wild boars and Mangalitza swine did not carry Asian variants at the MT-CYB locus.
