Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections, a disparity that has only worsened in recent years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, an overall increasing trend remained.
Methods: We utilized data from the MSM cycle of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) study in San Francisco, California, conducted from June 2021 through December 2021, to identify socio-ecological disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic that were associated with sexually transmitted infections.

Timor Leste is one of the top countries in Asia with a high incidence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). The success of TB treatment necessitated a more profound comprehension of adherence as a multifaceted behavioral issue, along with identifying the barriers that hinder and the factors that promote patient adherence. This study aimed to assess the rate of pulmonary TB medication adherence and identify its predictors among adults in Metinaro and Becora, Dili, Timor-Leste.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated prevalence of alcohol use and violence, including gender-based violence (GBV); however, little is understood about the pandemic's impact on the relationship between the two. Data were collected from January 2021-April 2023 with adults who drink alcohol (N = 565) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Questions assessed prevalence of heavy alcohol use (≥4 drinks on one occasion ≥4 times a month) in the past 3 months and violence/GBV exposure before and during the pandemic.

Background Men who have sex with men (MSM) represent a disproportionate total of incident HIV cases. Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has contributed to significant declines in total HIV incidence. Barriers to PrEP include individual and structural factors that can prevent PrEP adherence and persistence.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the sampling method for the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) in San Francisco changed from physical venue time-location sampling (TLS) to online or virtual venue TLS for men who have sex with men (MSM). We present differences in the samples of MSM recruited using physical venue TLS in 2017 and virtual venue TLS in 2021. We further assess changes in preventive and risk behaviors from 2017 to 2021 after controlling for differences in the sample compositions with multivariable Poisson models using GLM with robust standard errors.

Background: Digital health technologies (DHTs) have expanded exponentially since the COVID-19 crisis and have prompted questions about their impact across all levels of health systems. Because health organisations and systems play a central role in the success or failure of the transition to more equitable and sustainable societies, the concept of Responsible Innovation in Health (RIH), focused on aligning the processes and outcomes of innovation with societal values, is gaining interest in research, policy, and practice. This study aims to explore enablers and constraints to the development, procurement and/or utilisation of responsible DHTs in health organisations.

Background: Hazardous alcohol consumption (HAC) is prevalent among sexual minority men (SMM). Using syndemic theory, this study aimed to identify the number of syndemic conditions, including their combinations, and their association with HAC among SMM in San Francisco.
Method: We conducted a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from 246 SMM who consume alcohol.

Background: Zika virus (ZIKV) primarily spreads through mosquito bites and can lead to microcephaly in infants and Guillain-Barre syndrome in adults. It is noteworthy that ZIKV can persist in the semen of infected males for extended periods and can be sexually transmitted. Infection with ZIKV has severe pathological manifestations on the testicular tissues of male mice, resulting in reduced sperm motility and fertility.

As the Mediterranean diet (MDi) has demonstrated a powerful preventative effect on various medical conditions, a positive effect on oral health may also be speculated. Tooth loss, pain or tooth mobility may discourage the consumption of specific food types, affecting MDi adherence. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between adherence to MDi and oral health in adult populations.

Employing small extracellular vesicles (EVs) as drug delivery vehicles presents a plethora of advantages over conventional drug delivery methods, including biological compatibility, engineering versatility for targeted delivery, and biodegradability. Therefore, strategies aimed at amplifying their therapeutic potential involve developing efficient, tissue-specific, and non-immunogenic delivery approaches. Despite rapid advancements in the realm of EVs as drug delivery systems in recent years, the availability of a high-yield, reproducible, and cost-effective source for EVs production and isolation remains a limiting factor for practical application.

Considerable evidence has been accumulated on serious acute health outcomes associated with short-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM). Modifying factors of those associations, however, have been less explored and need further analyses. In this national study, we investigated whether short-term effects of PM are modified according to region, cause of mortality/hospitalization, season, age, and sex.

Background: Machine learning methods are proposed to improve the predictions of ambient air pollution, yet few studies have compared ultrafine particles (UFP) models across a broad range of statistical and machine learning approaches, and only one compared spatiotemporal models. Most reported marginal differences between methods. This limits our ability to draw conclusions about the best methods to model ambient UFPs.

Background: Transgender women (hereafter "trans women") face social marginalization, stigma, and discrimination and experience a high burden of HIV. More recently, trans women have been identified as having a high risk for hepatitis C (HCV) infection. The interaction between these two diseases and the risks for HIV/HCV co-infection among trans women are understudied.
