Objective: We examined the feasibility and clinical outcomes of implementing a brief intervention for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in persons with serious mental illness receiving services at a large, urban community mental health agency. The Brief, Relaxation, Education and Trauma Healing (BREATHE) program is a standardized, three-session intervention that targets PTSD symptoms through teaching breathing retraining and personalized psychoeducation about trauma and PTSD.
Method: A total of 60 clinicians were trained in the BREATHE intervention throughout the agency, which was offered to 233 clients who screened positive for probable PTSD.

Background: The Narrative Experiences Online (NEON) Intervention provides self-managed web-based access to mental health recovery narratives (n = 659). We evaluated effectiveness and cost-effectiveness in improving quality of life for adults resident in England with mental health problems and recent psychosis experience.
Methods: Prospectively registered pragmatic parallel-group randomised trial controlling for usual care, recruiting from statutory mental health services and through community engagement activities, with a 52-week primary endpoint (ISRCTN11152837).

People living with mental illness report a broad spectrum of nutrition risks, beyond malnutrition, but appropriate and adequately validated nutrition risk screening tools for mental health settings are lacking. This study aimed to develop a nutrition-risk screening tool, the NutriMental Screener, and to perform preliminary feasibility and validity testing. In an international, stakeholder engaging approach, a multifaceted nutrition-risk screening tool for mental health services was developed by means of workshops with international stakeholders and two online surveys.

Background: Most individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) strongly prefer independent living over living in an institution. Independent Supported Housing (ISH) provides housing rehabilitation for persons with SMI in their accommodations. However, most individuals who need housing rehabilitation live in institutional housing settings (housing rehabilitation as usual: HAU).

Introduction: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at risk of experiencing lower quality-of-life, fatigue, and depression. Few randomized controlled trials have studied the effect of physical activity (PA) on these in adult long-term CCS. This study investigated the effect of a 1-year individualized PA intervention on health-related quality-of-life (HRQOL), fatigue, and distress symptoms in adult CCS.

Narratives describing first-hand experiences of recovery from mental health problems are widely available. Emerging evidence suggests that engaging with mental health recovery narratives can benefit people experiencing mental health problems, but no randomized controlled trial has been conducted as yet. We developed the Narrative Experiences Online (NEON) Intervention, a web application providing self-guided and recommender systems access to a collection of recorded mental health recovery narratives (n=659).

Objective: This study involved the development, dissemination, and pre- and postassessment of a mental illness awareness webinar. The goal of the webinar is to educate the general public about serious mental illness (SMI) and reduce stigmatizing attitudes.
Method: The study included 203 participants ( = 101 treatment group; = 102 control group).

The prevalence of mental health symptoms on university campuses is high and rising, resulting in detrimental effects on academic performance. Few resources exist to address the needs of students who must leave school for mental health reasons. Seeking to understand the effect of a college reentry program (NITEO) to assist students in reengaging with undergraduate studies, we conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with all college coaches ( = 5), triangulating our findings with interviews of NITEO students ( = 31).

Importance: Impaired cognitive functioning is a core characteristic of schizophrenia, present from the onset of the illness and relatively stable thereafter. Despite evidence supporting the impact of early intervention services (EIS) on improving symptoms and functioning in first episode psychosis (FEP), controlled research has not examined its impact on cognitive functioning.
Objective: To evaluate the longitudinal course of cognitive functioning in FEP patients participating in a large, controlled study comparing EIS with usual services.

Background: This randomised controlled trial (RCT) assessed the effect of a 1-year, partially supervised, physical activity (PA) intervention on a cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk score in adult survivors of childhood cancer.
Methods: We included childhood cancer survivors ≥16 y at enrolment, <16 y at diagnosis and ≥5 y in remission. The intervention group was asked to perform an additional ≥2.

Objective: Employment rates among individuals with serious mental illness may be improved by engagement in the individual placement and support (IPS) model of supported employment. Results from a recent randomized controlled trial (RCT) indicate that virtual reality job interview training (VR-JIT) improves employment rates among individuals with serious mental illness who have been actively engaged in IPS for at least 90 days. This study reports on an initial implementation evaluation of VR-JIT during the RCT in a community mental health agency.

Objective: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) who re-enter the labor market after extended unemployment may benefit from exposure to job interview training. This study explored the processes and perceived benefits of preparing for interviews using Virtual Reality Job Interviewing Training (VR-JIT) among employment specialists (ESs) and clients within the individual placement and support (IPS) model of supported employment.
Method: This study analyzed secondary qualitative data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of VR-JIT including qualitative focus groups comprised of IPS employment specialists ( = 11) and IPS clients ( = 13), semistructured interviews with IPS employment specialists ( = 3), and semistructured interviews with IPS clients ( = 3).

Older adults with serious mental illness (SMI) have compromised physical function that could be improved with exercise; however, retention in exercise programs is a challenge. This study was a retrospective analysis of retention for the 150 older veterans with SMI that enrolled in Gerofit, a clinical exercise program offered in the Veterans Health Administration. Chi-square and -tests were conducted to evaluate baseline differences between those that were and were not retained at six and 12 months.

Purpose: Meeting intervention requirements is crucial in behavioral trials. We examined patterns and predictors of physical activity (PA) adherence and contamination in a 1-year individualized randomized controlled PA behavioral intervention in childhood cancer survivors (CCS).
Methods: CCS aged ≥16 at enrolment, <16 at diagnosis, and ≥5 years in remission were identified from the Swiss Childhood Cancer Registry.

Background: Over the past 10 years, job interview training has emerged as an area of study among adults with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses who face significant challenges when navigating job interviews. The field of mental health services research has limited access to assessments of job interview skills with rigorously evaluated psychometric properties.
Objective: We sought to evaluate the initial psychometric properties of a measure assessing job interview skills via role-play performance.

Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is a long-standing and innovative employment service for individuals with mental illness with dozens of clinical trials demonstrating effectiveness. Little is known, however, about intentional adaptations to IPS, especially those outside of the context of research studies. Using an implementation science framework, we conducted an exploratory study to better understand the characteristics of stakeholder-reported adaptions to IPS, the impetus for their development, and perceived impacts.

Objective: For more than a decade, an increase in psychiatric disabilities has been reported worldwide among students in postsecondary education. Supported Education (SEd) interventions support students with psychiatric disabilities to return to or remain in education. As not much is known about the effectiveness of SEd, we conducted a systematic review of the research on the effects of SEd on educational functioning, including study success and student satisfaction.

Objective: Having meaningful social roles and full community participation have been examined as a central tenet of the recovery paradigm. We undertook this study to test a new multimodal, peer-led intervention, which we have developed with the aim of fostering the self-efficacy of individuals with psychiatric disabilities to pursue involvement in community activities of their choice.
Method: We evaluated the effectiveness of the 6-month manualized peer-delivered "Bridging Community Gaps Photovoice (BCGP)" program with a multisite randomized trial ( = 185), with recipients of services at five community mental health programs.
