A data harmonization project of three large prospective cardiovascular health-focused cohorts.

Am J Epidemiol

August 2024

Center for Health Promotion and Health Equity Research, Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

Few prospective studies examine multilevel resilience resources and psychosocial factors in relation to cardiovascular health and disease. Recent research indicates that resilience resources are associated with a reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease-related events, but few studies have examined this relationship across different racial/ethnic populations or in large cohorts. Harmonization may address these limitations because it allows data from several cohorts to be analyzed together, potentially increasing sample size and in turn power overall and in minority populations.

The COVID-19 pandemic magnified the cracks in healthcare performance. Dysfunctionalities and exhaustion appeared, but so did resilience and innovation. Examination of these cracks offers opportunities for learning and potential for new developments just as in the Japanese art of kintsugi, which is about building new objects from pieces of broken ceramic and mending the cracks.

The concept of (potential) years of life lost is a measure of premature mortality that can be used to compare the impacts of different specific causes of death. However, interpreting a given number of years of life lost at face value is more problematic because of the lack of a sensible reference value. In this paper, we propose three denominators to divide an excess years of life lost, thus obtaining three indicators, called average life lost, increase of life lost, and proportion of life lost, which should facilitate interpretation and comparisons.
