Source apportionment (SA) for indoor air pollution is challenging due to the multiplicity and high variability of indoor sources, the complex physical and chemical processes that act as primary sources, sinks and sources of precursors that lead to secondary formation, and the interconnection with the outdoor environment. While the major indoor sources have been recognized, there is still a need for understanding the contribution of indoor versus outdoor-generated pollutants penetrating indoors, and how SA is influenced by the complex processes that occur in indoor environments. This paper reviews our current understanding of SA, through reviewing information on the SA techniques used, the targeted pollutants that have been studied to date, and their source apportionment, along with limitations or knowledge gaps in this research field.

Due to their stability and structural freedom, NASICON-structured materials such as NaTi(PO) show a lot of promise as active electrode materials for aqueous batteries and deionization cells. However, due to their low intrinsic electronic conductivity, they must usually be composited with carbon to form suitable electrodes for power applications. In this work, two series of NaTi(PO)-carbon composite structures were successfully prepared by different approaches: postsynthetic pyrolytic treatment of citric acid and surface polymerized dopamine.

The detailed theoretical study of high-frequency signal gain, when a probe microwave signal is comparable to the AC pump electric field in a semiconductor superlattice, is presented. We identified conditions under which a doped superlattice biased by both DC and AC fields can generate or amplify high-frequency radiation composed of harmonics, half-harmonics, and fractional harmonics. Physical mechanisms behind the effects are discussed.

The appearance of biological molecules, so-called biomarkers in body fluids at abnormal concentrations, is considered a good tool for detecting disease. Biomarkers are usually looked for in the most common body fluids, such as blood, nasopharyngeal fluids, urine, tears, sweat, etc. Even with significant advances in diagnostic technology, many patients with suspected infections receive empiric antimicrobial therapy rather than appropriate treatment, which is driven by rapid identification of the infectious agent, leading to increased antimicrobial resistance.

Aqueous Na-ion batteries are among the most discussed alternatives to the currently dominating Li-ion battery technology, in the area of stationary storage systems because of their sustainability, safety, stability, and environmental friendliness. The electrochemical properties such as ion insertion kinetics, practical capacity, cycling stability, or Coulombic efficiency are strongly dependent on the structure, morphology, and purity of an electrode material. The selection and optimization of materials synthesis route in many cases allows researchers to engineer materials with desired properties.

In this article, we report the development of an electrochemical biosensor for the determination of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (rS). A gold disc electrode was electrochemically modified to form the nanocrystalline gold structure on the surface. Then, it was further altered by a self-assembling monolayer based on a mixture of two alkane thiols: 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA) and 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (6-MCOH) (SAM).

A supramolecular chiral hydrogen-bonded tetrameric aggregate possessing a large cavity and tetraarylporphyrin substituents was assembled using alternating 4H- and 2H-bonds between ureidopyrimidinone and isocytosine units, respectively. The aggregation mode was rationally shifted from social to narcissistic self-sorting by changing urea substituent size only. The H-bonded tetramer forms a strong complex with C guest, at the same time undergoing remarkable structural changes.

To fabricate graphene-based high-frequency electronic and optoelectronic devices, there is a high demand for scalable low-contaminated graphene with high mobility. Graphene synthesized via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on copper foil appears promising for this purpose, but residues from the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) layer, used for the wet transfer of CVD graphene, drastically affect the electrical properties of graphene. Here, we demonstrate a scalable and green PMMA removal technique that yields high-mobility graphene on the most common technologically relevant silicon (Si) substrate.

Despite the rapid development of optical imaging methods, high-resolution imaging with penetration into deeper tissue layers is still a major challenge. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been used successfully for non-invasive human retinal volumetric imaging , advancing the detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of various retinal diseases. However, there are important limitations of volumetric OCT imaging, especially coherent noise and the limited axial range over which high resolution images can be acquired.

Terahertz (THz) imaging is a powerful technique allowing us to explore non-conducting materials or their arrangements such as envelopes, packaging substances, and clothing materials in a nondestructive way. The direct implementation of THz imaging systems relies, on the one hand, on their convenience of use and compactness, minimized optical alignment, and low power consumption; on the other hand, an important issue remains the system cost and its figure of merit with respect to the image quality and recording parameters. In this paper, we report on the design and performance of an extraordinary low-cost THz imaging system relying on a InP Gunn diode emitter, paraffin wax optics, and commercially available GaAs high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) with a gate length of 200 nm as the sensing elements in a room temperature environment.

An essential amino acid, histidine, has a vital role in the secondary structure and catalytic activity of proteins because of the diverse interactions its side chain imidazole (Im) ring can take part in. Among these interactions, hydrogen donating and accepting bonding are often found to operate at the charged interfaces. However, despite the great biological significance, hydrogen-bond interactions are difficult to investigate at electrochemical interfaces due to the lack of appropriate experimental methods.

The imidazole ring (Im) of histidine side chains plays a unique role in the function of proteins through covalent bonding with metal ions and hydrogen bonding interactions with adjusted biomolecules and water. At biological interfaces, these interactions are modified because of the presence of an electric field. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with the functional Im group mimic the histidine side chain at electrified interfaces.

We used vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy to elucidate the possible effect of various levels of isotopic substitution (H/D) on the properties of the DPPC monolayer by probing DPPC/DO interface. We found that deuteration of the choline group has a great impact on monolayer properties, while monolayers with deuterated alkyl chains do not exhibit any differences under our experimental conditions. In addition, deuteration of the choline group strongly affected the hydration of the phosphate group.
